(11/09/05) Hackettstown, NJ --- On Wednesday evening the Skyline Conference announced its 2005 Fall Sports All-Conference Teams. Centenary's Women's Soccer program was well represented as three Lady Cyclones players were chosen for the team.
Sophomore's Tanya DiDonna (Highlands/Middletown South) and Clare Johnson (Morris Plains/Morristown) were selected to Skyline's First Team, for the second consecutive season. The third player chosen, junior Michelle Yerkes (Lumberton/Rancocas) was named to the Skyline's Second Team.
All three women's players did an outstanding job for Coach Kevin Davies this fall and were a large part of what the program was able to accomplish.
DiDonna finished the season third on the team in total points with seven, while playing most of her time at the center-mid position.
Johnson was the teams leading scorer with eight goals and 17 points, although she played in just six of their ten games.
Yerkes the team's most vocal defensive leader, played very well all season from the backfield and was a major contributor in all the team's set pieces scoring one goal and assisting on two others.
(10/29/05) Hackettstown, NJ -- Hackettstown, NJ -- Earlier today in the first game of today's soccer doubleheader, the Lady Cyclones of Centenary fell to Stevens by the final of 2-0.
Although the visiting Ducks out-shot the host Lady Cyclones by the tally of 32-1, the game was played very closely throughout the entire 90 minutes. With the score knotted 0-0 at the halftime break, both teams came out in the second stanza looking for that one breakaway or scoring chance that could give them the lead. Unfortunately for Centenary that break came for Stevens in the 71st minute, when Siena York-Carr (Davis, CA/Davis Senior) knocked one past goalkeeper Coree Reuter for the 1-0 advantage.
York-Carr, who had just finished a run off a Ducks corner kick, had the ball come to her feet after it was being knocked around by both teams. She calmly took a touch on the loose ball, and sent it in to the back of the net for her third goal of the season. From there the Lady Cyclones were forced to play a more attacking style, than what they had being doing up to that point. As the game neared the final two minutes, Stevens' Gina Crifasi (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) took an assist from Alison Amos (Plano, TX/Plano) and scored over the outstretched hands of Reuter, to take the two-goal lead.
The Ducks' two goals proved to be enough, as the Centenary women were unable to scratch out anything in the final moments. The win improves Stevens to 16-2 overall, 6-0 in the Skyline Conference. As for Centenary, Coree Reuter (La Center, WA/La Center) made 16 saves, however the loss drops the program to a final 2005 record of 3-7 overall, 2-4 in the Skyline.
(10/15/05) JERSEY CITY, NJ -- In the first of two games, the Centenary women took the field against the Lady Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent.
The game was scoreless throughout much of the first half until Melissa Hoffman (Riverside, NJ / Riverside) put Centenary on top 1-0 with just four minutes to play before the half. Despite the great efforts of MSV's goalkeeper, Alexis Alessi (Rockville Centre, NY / Oceanside) saving seven of the 10 shots taken by Centenary in the first, the Lady Cyclones seemed to end the half on great momentum.
In the second half, the Centenary women took control of the game as Tanya DiDonna (Highlands, NJ / Middletown S.) picked up right where they left off, by netting her first of her two goals on day which was assisted by Hoffman to put Centenary on top 2-0. Clare Johnson (Morris Plains, NJ / Morristown) also stepped up in the second half to score two goals as well which one was also assisted by Hoffman.
Goalkeeper Coree Reuter (La Center, WA / La Center) recorded her first shut-out of the season with nine saves from 16 shots on goals. Hoffman finished the day with two goals and two assists to help Centenary move ahead of two teams in the Skyline Conference race as they beat MSV 6-0.
Today's win improves Centenary to an overall record of 2-5 as Mount Saint Vincent drops to 5-5 overall.
May 31 - The Centenary College Women's Soccer program has hired a new Assistant Coach, to begin in the Fall of 2005. Lauren Sciocchetti has been approved for hire as the new Women's Soccer assistant. She will join Head Coach Kevin Davies for his seventh season with the Lady Cyclones program.
Coach Sciocchetti comes to Centenary this fall, following a brief coaching stint at Widener University last season. Prior to her first year of coaching, Lauren was a four-year letter winner with the Women's Soccer program at University of Pittsburgh. While at Pitt, she was chosen as a Team Captain in both her junior and senior seasons. She was the team's leading scorer in 2003, on her way to being named the team's Most Valuable Player. Her high school career consisted of playing as a member of the FC Delco Fear, where in 1998, the team was ranked second in the Nation, as well as being a USYSA National Semifinalist, and the Region 1 Champion.
When asked about Lauren's impact on the Women's program at Centenary, Head Coach Kevin Davies said, "she will bring a wealth of experience not only on the sidelines, but to our practice sessions as well. Everyone associated with the Women's Soccer program at Centenary are looking forward to working with Lauren."
