HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (September 16, 2009) – The Centenary women’s soccer team (5-1) defeated William Paterson (2-3-1), 2-0, Wednesday in Hackettstown, N.J. Sophomore Caitlin Veverka (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy) and freshman Caroline Mountney (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield) each came off the bench to score for the Lady Cyclones. “Neither team had many chances in the first half,” said head coach Kevin Davies. “In the second half we settled down just a little bit, and when we started playing and finding our way players then started making things happening. We always have a chance when we have quick players at the forward spots, and Veverka and Mountney did a great job today.” Neither team generated much offense in the first half, despite 10 shots from William Paterson in the period. Finally in the 62nd minute, Centenary got on the board when Veverka gathered the ball 20 yards out and drilled it past the William Paterson goalkeeper Meg Baker for her first goal of the season. The Lady Cyclones’ defense held the Pioneers off, and in the 87th minute Centenary put the game out of reach. Junior Jazmine Farrell (Newton, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) passed the ball to junior Sam Vanni (Haskell, N.J./Lakeland), who sent it to the middle of the box for Mountney. Baker saved the freshman’s first shot, but the ball rebounded to Mountney and she sent it to the back of the net. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Denti (Sergentsville, N.J./Hunterdon Central) recorded three saves to preserve her second shutout of the season. “We are very happy with how we are playing right now,” said Davies. “We are working hard and hopefully we will keep getting better. This is the best start we have had since I have been here and hopefully it will continue.” Centenary returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 19, with a road match at Wilkes at 2:30 p.m. Farrell Named Cyclone Of The Week

Despite nine wins, an appearance in the semifinals of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) tournament and five all-conference awards, the Centenary women’s soccer team was not satisfied with the 2008 campaign. “Many programs would be happy with a 9-9-2 season but we were not,” said head coach Kevin Davies. “We have set ourselves the target every year of winning the conference finals, and until we do that, every season will be a disappointment. We played very well in patches, against very good teams, but it was not consistent enough and it is that consistency we are looking for in this coming season to reach our goals.” Of the five all-conference award winners, three return for the Lady Cyclones. Junior Bianca Santulli and senior Lisa Stankiewicz earned First Team honors, while sophomore Caitlin Veverka was named to the Second Team. On the offensive side, Centenary returns most of its scoring, as Veverka led the team with 11 goals and 24 points and looks to build off an impressive rookie season. Pena was second on the team with 20 points, including eight scores, while Santulli and Stankiewicz finished with four goals apiece. Junior Samantha Vanni had two goals and two assists before injuries ended her 2008 season. “The 2009 team will be stronger in depth with very little difference in the ability level of the players,” said Davies. “We have a good mixture of experience and youth, and that combination should help us be successful this season.” At least six student-athletes are in competition for the forward positions. Besides Vanni and Veverka, sophomore Brittany Overland is looking to have another good season. She worked well with Veverka last year as the two combined for 17 goals and five assists. Pushing the returning players for the striking roles will be transfer Jazz Farrell, who comes from the College of Saint Rose in Albany, N.Y., and will bring a wealth of experience to the team. Freshmen Caroline Mountney and Arielle Hamilton round off the impressive list of possible forwards. The midfield position will be equally competitive with seven players fighting it out for starting spots. Santulli, who also earned NSCAA/adidas Third Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors, will be returning for her junior year after a very impressive sophomore season. She will be assisted by fellow classmates Danielle Dole and Kelly Michanzyk, as well as sophomore Kristyn Lehmann. All three have come into pre-season with a tremendous attitude and are playing with great confidence. Freshmen Chrissy Bressman and Sara Smith will be pushing for the outside midfield slots along with seniors Kiti Ovaskainen and Diana Gazzano. On the defense, Centenary returns two of its starters with Stankiewcz and senior Cheryl Stark, who had a solid 2008 season. The incoming freshmen include Kelly O’Dell, a hard-working defender from Warren Hills High School, and Samantha Marxen, who has been impressive during pre-season. Junior Ashley Gerber and freshman Lauren Lynch will also be pushing for playing time in the Cyclone defense. Minding the net will be junior Ashley Denti and transfer Samantha Davey. Denti is improving every year and her maturity is showing in the way she plays. She started all 20 games last season, finishing with 80 saves and seven shutouts. Davey will be pushing Denti for playing time during the season. Santulli and Stankiewcz will captain the team again this fall, but there are plenty of leaders on the team. Coach Davies is looking to Farrell, Vanni, Dole and most of the upper classmen to assist with the leadership duties. “Every year we look forward to a new season and a new challenge,” said Davies. “Our goals however, remain the same, to make and win the conference final and play in the NCAA Tournament. The 2009 team will be stronger in depth than any team I have coached at the college. Our non-traditional season saw many girls step up their level of play and that has created a more competitive environment with no position a guarantee for anyone. The incoming freshmen and transfers have arrived in good shape which is making it a very interesting and competitive pre-season. If everyone remains fit and healthy, it could be a good year for the Cyclones.”
