2007 Women's Lacrosse Season Preview

This spring the Centenary Women’s Lacrosse team begins their season under the direction of first year Head Coach John McCloskey.  Coach McCloskey is the Lady Cyclones third Head Coach in the last four years.  His approach to this spring season is broken down to a very small list of details.  Overall the biggest things he plans on addressing this year are discipline, work ethic, stick skills, and learning a new system. Each element above could be daunting in and of itself.  Obviously the team will be anxious to see how the wins and losses turn out.  The Women are focusing on playing the best lacrosse they can early on and going from there. Centenary has a very competitive schedule, with the state of New Jersey having some of the best women’s lacrosse in the country.

Offensively the team returns several key people in Michelle Garone, Clare Johnson, Nicole Becker and newcomer Kiti Ovaskainen. As they are able to learn the new system the team’s overall play will rise. Coach McCloskey is optimistic that the team can get the ball in the net, yet it remains to be seen how well the defense can keep it out of their own.  In the past there were simply too many fouls and cards making this an area that will need to be addressed.

Defensively the Lady Cyclones return three veterans, in Christina D'Alessandro, Megan Anderson, and Melissa Hoffman.  With these players in place there is a nucleus to build on and Coach McCloskey has been impressed with Hoffman’s development and D’Alessandro has been a great leader.

Our midfield has two very fine players in Garone and Johnson to get things going, yet all other positions will be filled by first year players.

The team’s goalie, Laura Davis, has emerged as a bright spot. She has dealt with a lot of adversity on and off the field over the past year and she has come through it like a champion.

The coaching staff is very pleased in the early going and Coach McCloskey has said “these girls have provided me with one of the best coaching experiences of my life”.  “They listen, respond, grow, and stay positive. Every coach dreams of this”. He eventually feels the women will be where they want to be and their effort will be cause of the success.
