![]() Roberts Named POTW for Second Straight Week(1/31/08) For the second consecutive week, Centenary senior Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) was named the PAC Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week. Roberts, the Lady Cyclones leading scorer and rebounder did just that again last week. She led the Centenary to women to a 1-1 week overall and in PAC play. Steph averaged over 20 points per game, while adding 8.5 rebounds and shot an outstanding 46.2 % from the field on 18-for-39 shooting. Her double-double performance of 21 points and 12 rebounds versus Cedar Crest was her third of the season.
Women Victorious Over Southern Vermont 79-57
(1/30/08) The Centenary Lady Cyclones basketball team hosted Southern Vermont College this evening in a night of special events. This game marks the women’s second annual Coaches vs. Cancer night, in which all proceeds collected will be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, as well as Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night. The Lady Cyclones came out hard and emerged victorious over the Mountaineers 79-57. The Lady Cyclones got out ahead quickly, going on an 11-0 run to start the game. Southern Vermont got on the board at the 14 minute mark and slowly started to deplete Centenary’s advantage. After a four minute scoring draught, Centenary’s lead was cut down to five with a score of 27-22. A quick timeout let the women regroup and as the buzzer sounded the women were again up by 11. After an inspiring speech by Professor Robert Quade over the half time break, the women took the floor rejuvenated for the second half. Four minutes into play the women extended their advantage to 20 for the first time after going on an 11-2 run. The women continued to control the game throughout the second half with their lead staying in double digits for the remaining minutes. As the clock hit zero, the women were happy to come away with a 79-57 final score. Kristen Camuso (Staten Island/St. Joseph's By the Sea) almost invisible in the first half, came out of her shell and hit five shots from the behind the arc in the second period alone to lead the team. Camuso finished the game with 20 points, including five from the free throw line, three rebounds and five steals while senior Ayana Way (Edison/J.P. Stevens) followed closely behind with 15 points and five steals. Senior Nicole VanTassel (Franklin/Wallkill Valley Regional) and freshman Leah Murphy (Hamburg, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) both added 12 points to the women’s total while VanTassel also put up a double-double, grabbing a team high 13 rebounds as well. For Southern Vermont Julie Fagan recorded a double-double netting 29 points and pulling down 15 rebounds for her team. The women are now 10-5 overall and are heading down to Baltimore, Maryland to take on PAC Conference rival the College of Notre Dame. Tip off for that game is Saturday, February 2nd 1:00pm. Boxscore Two Special Events to take Place at the Women's Basketball Game on Wednesday, January 30thThis Wednesday, January 30th, the Centenary College Women's Basketball team will host their second Coaches vs. Cancer night, as the Lady Cyclones take on Southern Vermont College. Proceeds from ticket sales and donation activities throughout the evening will benefit the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. Kay Yow, is the current North Carolina State University's Head Women's Basketball Coach, that was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and is currently battling the disease for the third time while trying to coach the Wolfpack to victory this season. The Kay Yow/ WBCA Cancer Fund in conjunction with The Jimmy V foundation will raise money for scientific research of all cancers and its cure, and assist the underserved in the fight against cancer. At halftime of the game, a very special faculty member of the Centenary College community is going to publicize his battle with cancer for the first time. Lady Cyclones Silence Crusaders 74-71 to Win Their Second Straight
(1/28/08) Earlier this evening the Centenary women’s basketball team played host to visiting Alvernia College in a PAC Conference rivalry. This game marked the first of two for the night as the men played in the second half of a double header following the women. Alvernia put up a tough fight but the Lady Cyclones were able to slip past the Crusaders by a score of 74-71 to avenge an earlier season defeat on the road. The Crusaders led throughout most of the first half, taking the advantage three minutes in and holding it until time ran out. The Lady Cyclones deficit rose to ten, the highest of the game, with 7:48 left on the clock but as the halftime buzzer sounded the women were only down by five with a score of 37-32. Freshman Leah Murphy (Hamburg, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) notched 10 points in the first period, enough to lead the team going into the locker room. The second half began on a 12-4 run by Centenary which put the Lady Cyclones up by four five minutes into play. The women kept their lead but only barely as the game stayed within a five point difference for the rest of the game. At the 10 minute mark Alvernia went back out in front 52-51 on a shot by Joanna Graber but Centenary answered right back when Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) drove in for a lay up. The two teams traded baskets and the lead for the next few minutes with neither team finding their groove. With three left on the clock and the Cyclones down by two Ayana Way (Edison/J.P. Stevens) made a crucial jumper to tie the game up again at 68. Missed shots at both ends kept the score even until a rebound lay-up by Roberts put the women back out in front by two with less than a minute left in the game. Despite a little bit of foul trouble at the end, the women were able to hold on come away with the victory. Senior Ayana Way led the Cyclones with 20 points on the night while Roberts recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Teammates Kristen Camuso (Staten Island/St. Joseph's By the Sea) and Laura Feigus (Colts Neck/St. Rose) both put 12 points apiece on the board for Centenary as well. For Alvernia, Joanna Graber tallied a team leading 20 points. Coming in behind Graber was freshman Alexandra Velazquez with 14 points, eight rebounds and five steals. (1/24/08) Centenary senior Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South)was again named Player of the Week for both the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) and the ECAC South Region this week. This is Roberts' second time receiving both accolades in the same week for her performance on the floor. For the week, Steph added to her season totals averaging 25 points for the pair of games, along with 7.5 rebounds and 5 assists. She also tallied 28 points in the team's victory over Marywood, which marked her second highest output of the year.
Centenary Women Down Cedar Crest College 68-58
(1/21/08) The Centenary women’s basketball team matched up against the Falcons from Cedar Crest College earlier this evening in the Folkner Family Gymnasium. The Lady Cyclones skated past their opponent by a final score of 68-58. This victory takes the women to 4-2 in the PAC and 8-4 overall while Cedar Crest drops to 5-10 and 0-8 in the conference. Senior Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) pushed the team out in front early with eight 11 points and eight rebounds in the first half alone. The women took a double digit lead after only five minutes of play and stretched the gap to its widest of 18 with 9:34 left before the halftime buzzer. Ayana Way(Edison/J.P. Stevens) added eight points to the women’s total which helped them to a ten point lead heading into the locker room. In the second half of play, The Lady Cyclones held a steady advantage over the Falcons throughout the beginning ten minutes. Cedar Crest pulled back within ten midway through the period and a shot by Leann Wallower dropped the Falcons deficit to six with less than nine in the game. The two teams traded baskets for the next few plays but the Lady Cyclones were able to hold strong and return their lead to double digits four minutes later. Centenary kept play under control and extended their lead to 15 again with a little over three minutes on the clock. The Falcons were not able to close the gap again and Centenary was able to come away with a 68-58 victory. Roberts paced the team with a double-double, scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds while Way followed closely behind with 20 five rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Kristen Camuso (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph’s by the Sea) added eight points to the Lady Cyclones total and tallied eight rebounds and five steals as well. Leading for Cedar Crest was Wallower who recorded 23 points as fellow Falcon Kelly Oakes who notched a double-double with 14 points and 17 rebounds. (1/17/08) The Lady Cyclones took their 3-1 conference record to Reading, PA on Thursday evening for a match-up with unbeaten Alvernia College, and came out the losing end of a 108-80 final. Centenary's second PAC loss came on the heels of four straight victories, which included two straight in conference. A delayed start due to inclement weather did not seem to bother the visitor's as Centenary jumped out to an early 9-2 lead. Alvernia answered quickly first knotting the game at 11-11 with a small 9-2 run of their own. The host's continued their scoring burst eventually outscoring the Lady Cyclones 23-7 over a seven minute span and took a 47-31 lead into the halftime break. Centenary made a small run early in the second half pulling back to within 11 points at 51-40, and again found itself within the same spread at the 13 minute mark. However Alvernia scored seven straight and 14 of the next 18 for a 21-point lead with just over nine to go. That would be as close as it would get for Centenary, whose pressure defense never halted an Alvernia offense that went for 61 second half points in route to the 108-80 victory. Freshman Catherine Olmstead (North Brunswick/Immaculata) contributed a solid performance scoring 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Roberts Leads Lady Cyclones Past Marywood 68-55(1/14/08) The Centenary Women’s basketball team played host to Marywood University, a PAC Conference rival this evening in a double header with the men’s. Despite a tight first half, the Lady Cyclones were able to take a commanding lead over the Pacers and come away with a 68-55 victory. The game began with the majority of play going end to end and neither team getting an edge. Ten minutes into the half the game was knotted up at 15 a peice. With five minutes left to go in the half the Pacers took a five point lead, which would come to be their largest of the game. A three point play by Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) brought the women back within three only seconds later. At the halftime buzzer, Roberts had tallied 18 of the women’s 33 total points. The Lady Cyclones tied it up again with only three to go and they kept up the pace. Senior Laura Feigus (Colts Neck/St. Rose) and freshman Leah Murphy (Hamburg, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) both hit three pointers to give their team a six point lead heading into the locker room. Centenary’s burst at the end of the first period gave the Lady Cyclones the momentum they needed to open up the score in second half. The women went on a 12-3 run expanding their lead to 17 off of a foul shot by Roberts. Centenary maintained a 10 plus point margin throughout the remainder of the game. Roberts dominated the floor for the Lady Cyclones, totaling 28 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Feigus and Ayana Way (Edison/J.P. Stevens) both aided in the victory putting up 12 and nine points respectively. For the Pacers, Caity Hadzimichalis led with 15 points and four steals, while teammate Amanda Lass came away with a double-double, tallying 11 points and 11 rebounds. This loss pushes Marywood to 2-2 in the PAC and 8-3 overall. Presently, Centenary is 7-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The women are back on the road this Thursday as they head to Reading, PA to take on Alvernia College at 6:00pm on January 17th. Boxscore Centenary Women Register Road Victory 65-58(1/9/08) On Wednesday night the Centenary Women's Basketball team traveled to New London, CT for a non-conference game with Mitchell College. After leading by nine at half, the Lady Cyclones held on down the stretch for a 65-58 road victory, improving to 4-3 on the season. Centenary led by as many as seven points twice during the first twelve miniutes of play, only to exntend that to nine at the 5:43 mark of the half. The Lady Cyclones kept their 11 point advantage into the halftime break, leading 33-24. The host Pequots battled back to tie the score five minutes into the second stanza and eventually ;led by four with 10:00 to go. After tying the score fotr the sixth in the game at 50-50 with just under seven minutes to go, Centenary ended the game with a 15-8 run which proved to the difference. The Lady Cyclones went a perfect 5-for-5 from the free thrown line in final minutes to help ice the game. Senior Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Sophomore Nicole Van Tassel (Franklin, NJ/Walkill Valley) also earned a double-double with 10 boards and 10 points. Marissa DiStasio (Norwich, CT/Norwich Fre Academy) added seven points and pulled down four boards in the victory. For Mitchell College, Jennifer Iglesias (Waterbury, CT) scored a game high 19 points for the Pequots. (12/5/07) Centenary women's basketball player Stephanie Roberts was named Player of the Week for both the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) and the ECAC South Region. Roberts was also recognized by the PrestoSports/Met Basketball Writer’s Association as an Honor Roll selection. She is the first Lady Cyclones Basketball player to be selected as player of the week in the PAC Conference and ECAC this winter. In a week that saw the Centenary Women’s Basketball team open the year with two straight victories, Roberts was the main focal point averaging 28.0 points and 10.5 rebounds for the two contests. She also recorded a career high 33 points in the team’s opening night win over York College (NY).
Lady Cyclones Edged by Misericordia 68-62 (copy 1)
(12/3/07) The Centenary Lady Cyclones basketball team played host to visiting Misericordia this evening in a PAC Conference rivalry. In a tight game the women were eventually overcome by the Cougars 68-62. Senior Jessa Jones (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) recorded a double-double, tallying 18 points and 13 rebounds while topping the team in both categories. The first half began with the Lady Cyclones taking the advantage in points with a score of 9-4 only 3 minutes into the game. The Cougars answered back scoring ten to take the lead and leaving Centenary scoreless for nearly six minutes. Senior Ayana Way (Edison/J.P. Stevens) knotted the score up again at 14 with less than nine to go in the period. The two teams traded the lead throughout the remainder of the half with neither team taking more than a four point advantage. With 20 seconds left in the half, Jones hit a quick jumper to tie the game up at 28 going into the locker room. As the second half began, the Lady Cyclones had a hard time getting in their stride and Misericordia was able to gain and hold a lead for the first seven minutes of play. Centenary was able to even the score again at 40 in the 13th minute of play on a shot outside the arc by sophomore Kristen Camuso (Staten Island/St. Joseph's By the Sea). A lay up by Ericka Morrison pushed the Cougars back out in front and although they tied it up one more time the Lady Cyclones could not find the lead. With 1:34 left on the game clock Camuso hit a big three pointer to cut Misericordia’s advantage to two, but the women were unable to keep the Cougars off the board as the game ended with a six point advantage towards the visiting team. Jones led the team in shots and rebounds while teammates Camuso and Way both put up double figures. Camuso also recorded three steals and senior Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) pulled down nine boards for the Lady Cyclones. For Misericordia, Morrison had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds , Lindsey Sykes recorded 15 points for the Cougars and Courtney Sykes tallied 14, including four three pointers. Lady Cyclones Improve to 2-0 with First PAC Win
(11/29/07) The Centenary women’s basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season, and 1-0 in the PAC Conference earlier this evening, with an 87-47 victory over Immaculata University. The victory marks the first ever win in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference for the women, in this their first season of competition. The women opened the game outscoring the visitor’s 18-2. From there both sides had trouble taking care of the ball resulting in 25 combined turnovers in the half. The Lady Cyclones allowed Immaculata to creep back, leading just 24-15 with eight minutes left in the half. However the host’s once again took control topping IU 14-7 to close out the half. In the second half Centenary brought more defensive pressure, forcing 13 second half turnovers, 25 in all for IU. After extending the lead to more than thirty half way through the period, the women cruised to their first conference victory of the season, improving themselves to 1-0 in PAC play. For Centenary in the win seniors Jessa Jones (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) and Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) each recorded double-doubles, with Roberts scoring a game high 23 points. Jones added 21 points, while players collected 17 rebounds each. Leah Murphy (Hamburg, NY/Mount Mercy Academy), Kristen Camuso (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph’s by the Sea), and Ayana Way (Edison/JP Stevens) all added double figures, scoring 13, 10, and 10 respectively. Immaculata’s Kasey Hicks and Jessica Gaburo led the Mighty Macs scoring 11 and 10 points in the loss. Boxscore Lady Cyclones Top York College(NY) 75-54
(11/27/07) The Centenary women’s basketball team played their season opener tonight against visiting York College (NY) at home in the Folkner Family Gymnasium. The Lady Cyclones, led by senior Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) who topped her career numbers, were able to capture the victory by a score of 75-54. The women went ahead early in the first half, leading by as many as 11, off of a lay up by senior Ayana Way (Edison/J.P. Stevens) after the first seven minutes of play. York answered back, pulling within one with ten minutes to go, but the Lady Cyclones held on to long enough to get their rhythm back. In the last six minutes of the half, the women extended their lead once again, scoring 12 points to York’s four. Roberts netted eight of the 12 on Centenary’s run to give the women a halftime score of 37- 26. Less than three minutes into the second period, the Lady Cyclones lengthened their lead to 20 points off of four baskets and a free throw by Roberts and a jumper by freshman Leah Murphy (Hamburg, NY/Mount Mercy Academy). Murphy would end the night with six points for the Lady Cyclones. Centenary continued to control the game, leading by as many as 28 in the closing minutes. Roberts had the advantage in points for Centenary, recording a career high of 33. She also went 7-8 at the foul line and grabbed four rebounds for the Lady Cyclones. Way added 10 points and two rebounds to the women’s total while teammate Jessa Jones (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) tallied seven points and eight rebounds on the night. For the Lady Cardinals, Chiquita Green led the team with 21 points and 15 rebounds and Delores Mayweather, who went 4-5 at the charity stripe, added 16 point and 7 rebounds. The Lady Cyclones are now 1-0 and back in action on Thursday, November 29th at 6:00pm when they play their first PAC Conference rival of the season, Immaculata, at home in a double header with the men’s team. Boxscore Women's Basketball Season PreviewThe Centenary College Women’s Basketball team looks to turn the heat up for 2007-2008 season, as they return 10 players from a year ago. Last winter the team produced the best record in seven seasons, led the Nation in scoring for parts of the season, and qualifying for the Skyline Conference tournament for the fourth consecutive year. Led by third year head coach Lorie Khalil, the Lady Cyclones are on a mission to make a statement this season in their newly joined conference the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC), along with playing their first full season in the renovated, state of the art Folkner Family Gymnasium in the John M. Reeves Student Center, with the gymnasium seating capacity of 1,200. The Lady Cyclones will be led this season by a core of 4 talented returning seniors, including Skyline All - Conference 2nd team players, guard/forward Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) and Jessa Jones (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield). Roberts, the team’s leading scorer (14.4) and rebounder (9.1), finished ranked 87th in among Div. III in rebounds per game. Jones, a guard/forward combo follows right behind Roberts as the teams 2nd leading scorer (13.6) and rebounder (8.7). Senior captain point guard, Ayana Way (Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens) returns as the team’s floor leader. Last winter she averaged 6.9 points per game. Shooting guard, Laura Feigus (Colts Neck/St. Rose) returns from a season where she averaged 8.6 ppg and was second on the team in three-pointers made (30). Sophomore guard, Kristen Camuso (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph’s-by-the-Sea) the teams Cyclone Award winner, sophomore forward Nicole VanTassel (Franklin ,NJ/Walkill), and sophomore guard/forward combo Tiara Byrd (Chester, PA/Concord Christian Aacademy) round out the returnees for the Lady Cyclones. Centenary is extremely excited about its most highly anticipated incoming class of five talented freshman, all coming from top –ranked girls’ basketball teams in the states of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. Among the incoming class is freshman guard, Patricia Zillas (Hicksville, NY/Long Island Lutheran). Zillas, comes to Centenary following a stellar high school career where she reached the 1,000 point plateau and gained many Conference honors. All –Conference high school player, Leah Murphy (Hamburg, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) joins the influx of freshman guards for the Lady Cyclones. Catherine Olmstead (North Brunswick, NJ/Immaculata), Marissa DiStasio (Norwich, CT/Norwich Free Academy), and Samantha Vareles (Mt.
