Women Fall 79-62 to Alvernia in Opening Round of PAC Playoffs

Nicole Van Tassel

(2/25/08)  Earlier this evening the Centenary Women’s Basketball team’s season came to an end with a 79-62 loss at Alvernia College in the opening round of the PAC Tournament.  The Lady Cyclones finished the season with an overall record of 15-10, and a trip to the post-season their first year in the conference.

In the first half the visiting Lady Cyclones jumped out to an early 9-5 lead, thanks to a quick eight points from sophomore Nicole Van Tassel (Franklin/Walkill Valley).  The host Crusaders came right back over the next three minutes with a 5-0 run of their own to jump in front 10-9.  By the 12-minute mark of the half, Alvernia had increased the advantage to 21-11.  After the cutting the deficit to as little as five points numerous times over the next ten minutes, Centenary pulled to within 31-27 with 1:14 remaining in the period.  Following an Alvernia basket, Van Tassel who scored 12 first-half points, once again came through for the visitor’s capitalizing on an old-fashioned three-point play.  The basket plus-one pulled the women to within three at 33-30.  Centenary would get one more shot that was blocked, and went into the intermission trailing by three.

The Lady Cyclones opened the second half on a 9-5 run, which included back-to-back three pointers by sophomore Kristen Camuso (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph’s by the Sea).  The second of which gave Centenary a 39-38 lead at the 17-minute mark.  From there the Crusaders again used a brief 4-0 run to silence the visitor’s over the next 1:10.  The home team push was not done there however, as Alvernia increased the run to a 15-4 difference as they jumped in front 53-43 near the 11:30 mark.  Both teams traded baskets to keeping the lead at ten (58-48) before each side went scoreless over three minute span.  By the 7:35 mark of the second half, Avernia had matched their largest lead of the game at 60-48.  With 3:50 remaining in the contest the Alvernia lead had grown to 70-53 and the Centenary women began their attempt at a late game run.  Unfortunately for the Lady Cyclones, a second half charge was not in the cards as they fell by the final of 79-62.

In the loss for Centenary, Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) led the way with a team high 20 points while teammates Kristen Camuso and Ayana Way (Edison / John P. Stevens) added 14 and 10 points respectively.  Nicole Van Tassel recorded her first double-double of the season scoring 13 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
