Season Review

In 2009, Kim Broking’s first year as head coach, the Centenary softball team set program records in wins and conference victories, finished tied for second in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament and placed second in the ECAC South Tournament. Although it would have been hard to even duplicate the success of last season, the team actually did even better, finishing 30-14, including 18-4 in CSAC action, breaking the single-season marks in wins and conference victories it set last season. The team finished third in the CSAC Tournament and reached the ECAC South Tournament for the second consecutive season.

A Centenary student-athlete earned CSAC Pitcher or Player of the Week honors for seven consecutive weeks and the team swept the two awards on three separate occasions. The Cyclones were led by catcher Cara Montferrat, pitcher Kristin Durborow and shortstop Caitlin Veverka.

Montferrat became the program’s first ever All-American, earning Third Team NFCA All-American and First Team All-NFCA East Region honors. She also took home CSAC and ECAC South Rookie of the Year accolades and was named All-CSAC First Team Catcher and ECAC South Second Team All-Star. Montferrat hit .417 (55-for-132) with 43 runs, 15 doubles, five triples, 12 home runs and 56 RBI. She slugged .879, walked 29 times and had an on-base percentage of .515. She was just as stellar defensively, posting a fielding percentage of .986 with 342 putouts, 15 assists and just five errors. She led the team in doubles, home runs, RBI, slugging percentage, walks, on-base percentage and put outs and tied for the team lead in triples while setting single-season program records in home runs, doubles, total bases, RBI, slugging percentage, walks and put outs. She was named CSAC Player of the Week twice.

Durborow had one of the best years for a Cyclones pitcher, going 20-6 with 14 complete games, six shutouts, 207 strikeouts and a .206 batting average against. She was a five-time CSAC Pitcher of the Week, a three-time Cyclone of the Week and earned ECAC South Pitcher of the Week honors on April 27. Durborow set single-season program records in wins, shutouts, strikeouts, starts, appearances and innings pitched and was named First Team All-CSAC Pitcher and Second Team All-NFCA East Region. Veverka earned All-CSAC Honorable Mention and Second Team All-NFCA East Region honors. She hit a team-best .438 (63-for-144) with 45 runs, 10 doubles, five triples, three home runs and 40 RBI, setting program records in hits and runs. She was a two-time CSAC Player of the Week.

The Cyclones opened their season in Kissimmee, Fla., going 5-5 over Spring Break. But they came home and went 7-1 consecutive games, including a 3-1 mark in CSAC action. After a tough double-header against Cabrini that saw Centenary drop two hard-fought games, 4-3 and 3-0, the team went 15-3 the rest of the way, including 15-1 in conference games, clinching the second overall seed in the CSAC Tournament, where they were eventually eliminated by Cabrini.

In the ECAC South Tournament, Centenary faced the same team it lost the 2009 Championship game to, Misericordia. In an incredibly close contest, the Cougars advanced thanks to a 1-0 victory. CC also achieved success off the field, as 10 Lady Cyclones were named to the CSAC All-Academic Team. The team has a great chance to continue its successful seasons as everyone returns in 2010.

Centenary's Season Ends In ECAC South Tournament

Junior Kristin Durborow allowed just one hit in six innings.

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (May 13, 2010) – The Centenary softball team’s season came to an end with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Misericordia in the first round of the ECAC South Tournament, Thursday in Hackettstown, N.J. For the second consecutive season, MU (27-16) eliminated the Cyclones (30-14) from the tournament, as the Cougars defeated CC 3-1 in the 2009 ECAC South Tournament Championship game.

The Cyclones loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning but sophomore Gabrielle Pellegrino (Jersey City, N.J./Holy Family Academy) grounded into a fielder’s choice and fellow classmate Caitlin Veverka (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy)’s laser to right field was caught on a nice defensive play by MU’s Maria Kidron.

In the seventh inning, Durborow walked the first batter and junior Ali Knapp (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) came out of the pen to pitch. After Knapp got the first out, Wenner doubled to put runners on second and third. Ashley Ballard hit a bloop single down the right field line to give the Cougars the lead, 1-0. Centenary was unable to put a runner on in the bottom of the inning, and MU advanced to face DeSales on Saturday on the campus of Bethany College in Bethany, W.V.

(May 7, 2010) – The Centenary softball team was unable to come back from an early 3-0 deficit, eventually falling to Cabrini, 3-2, in the double-elimination round of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament, Friday on the campus of Nuemann University in Aston, Pa. The Cyclones will take on the loser of Marywood and Neumann at 2:00 p.m.

Cabrini scored one in the first and to in the third. Centenary’s bats were held silent by Cavaliers pitcher Liz Zimmer, who gave up just four hits in seven innings. In the sixth, however, the Cyclones finally got on the board. A pair of errors put runners on the corners. Junior Sarah Olsen (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Pope John XXIII) grounded out to score sophomore Gabrielle Pellegrino (Jersey City, N.J./Holy Family Academy) and then freshman Kelly O’Dell (Stewartsville, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) singled home sophomore Caitlin Veverka (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy).

Centenary’s Ali Knapp (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery), who came on in relief of starter Kristin Durborow (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional), pitched a one-two-three top of the seventh. Trailing by one, the Cyclones were unable to get on base in the bottom of the frame, as Zimmer closed the door with a one-two-three inning of her own.

Durborow took the loss, giving up three runs, two earned, in three innings of work. Knapp pitched four innings of two-hit ball for Centenary.

Facing elimination, Centenary’s bats came alive in the second contest, racking up 11 hits in a 5-1 win over Marywood. The loss knocked the Pacers out of the tournament as they also fell to Neumann, 8-4.

Softball Falls Short In CSAC Playoffs

Sophomore Caitlin Veverka went one-for-three with a double and an RBI in Centenary's loss.

ASTON, Pa. (May 9, 2010) The Centenary softball team scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to bring themselves to within two, but ultimately the rally fell short, as Centenary fell to Cabrini College 4-2, thus eliminating them from the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) playoffs.

After scoring two runs in the second inning, one in the third and one in the fourth, Cabrini held a 4-0 advantage over the Lady Cyclones which they took into the seventh inning. Centenary led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a double by Cara Montferrat (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) followed by an RBI double from Caitlin Veverka (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family) for Centenary’s first run.

Freshman Kelly O’Dell (Stewartsville, N.J./Warren Hills) then singled home Veverka to make the score 4-2. That would be as close as Centenary could make it, however, as the Cavaliers shut the door on Centenary and ended the game, 4-2.

Montferrat finished the game going two-for-four and scoring a run, while O’Dell and Veverka each went one-for-three and had the lone RBI’s. Pitchers Ali Knapp (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) and Kristin Durborow (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) combined for eight strikeouts.

Sophomore Caitlin Veverka (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy) is batting a team-best .576 (19-for-33) with 10 RBI, nine runs and five doubles.

After today’s double-header, softball returns to action on Saturday, March 27, with its CSAC opener at Gwynedd-Mercy at noon.

Montferrat Named CSAC Player Of The Week

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (March 22, 2010) – Two Centenary student-athletes received Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Weekly Awards, the league announced Monday. Softball freshman Cara Montferrat (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) was named Player of the Week and women’s lacrosse senior Megan Mars (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) earned Honor Roll accolades. Montferrat was also named Cyclone of the Week.

Montferrat becomes the second Centenary softball player in as many weeks to earn a CSAC award, as junior Kristin Durborow (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) was named Pitcher of the Week on March 15. Montferrat put together a solid week for the Cyclones as they took part in the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla., over their Spring Break. She hit .533 (8-for-15) on the week and led the team in runs (eight), home runs (two), RBIs (eight), slugging percentage (1.067) and total bases (16). She also hit two doubles and played flawless defense, recording 29 putouts, two assists and a fielding percentage of 1.000.

Centenary returns to action on Wednesday, March 24, with a game at in-state rival Drew at 3:00 p.m.

Durborow Named CSAC Pitcher Of The Week

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (March 15, 2010) – Three Centenary student-athletes received Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Weekly Awards, the league announced Monday. Softball junior Kristin Durborow (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) was named Pitcher of the Week while women’s lacrosse senior Megan Mars (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) and men’s lacrosse freshman Conor Nolan (Hillsborough, N.J./Immaculata) were each named to the Honor Roll.

For her efforts, Durborow was also named Cyclone of the Week. Centenary softball played two games on Sunday as part of its Spring Break trip to Kissimmee, Fla. Durborow went the distance in CC’s first game, a 4-3 loss to Ashford, and then came off the bench in the second contest and pitched five innings, picking up the win, as the Cyclones came out on top of Staten Island, 16-3. Durborow combined to throw 10 strikeouts in the two games.

Centenary continues its Spring Break trip with two games today, against Rutgers-Camden and McDaniel.

2010 Season Preview

The Centenary softball team had a banner year in 2009. The Lady Cyclones set program-records with 27 victories, 17 conference wins and earned a berth to the ECAC Tournament for the first time in program history, placing second. Despite CC’s success, reigning Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Coach of the Year Kim Broking expects even better from the team in 2010.

“We had a great season in 2009,” said Broking. “We finished with a record of 27-14 and we were the runner up in both the CSAC and ECAC Tournaments. The girls want to do even better this season and they are working hard to improve.”

Despite losing Jolyn Veres, who leaves as the program’s all-time leader in runs scored and walks and stands in the top five in games played, at bats, doubles, triples, home runs, hits, total bases, stolen bases and putouts, the team returns five All-CSAC performers.

Junior Sarah Olsen was named to the First Team after leading the team with 126.1 innings pitched, 128 strikeouts, 16 wins, 11 complete games, five shutouts and an ERA of 1.77. She ranked 50th in Division III in wins, 66th in hits allowed, 70th in strikeouts and 79th in ERA. In CSAC statistics, she ranked second in ERA and third in strikeouts. At the plate, the junior hit .317 (38-for-120) with 26 RBI, 14 runs, nine doubles and one homerun.

Junior Ali Knapp earned Second Team honors and was named to the ECAC Division III South Second Team. She was first in the CSAC with 50 hits and batted .376 (50-for-133) while recording a team-high 27 RBI along with 22 runs, six doubles, two home runs and one triple. On the mound, she ranked 39th in  Division III with two saves while recording an ERA of 3.03 in 14 appearances with two complete games and one shutout.

Senior Lorena Papa and sophomore Caitlin Veverka were also named to the Second Team while Danielle Dundas earned Honorable Mention Accolades. Papa hit a team-best .378 (34-for-90) while recording 24 runs, 12 RBI, four triples and three doubles. Veverka joined the team in the middle of the season after injuries crippled the Cyclones and wound up with a .293 average (17-for-58), 10 runs, nine RBI, four doubles and two home runs and Dundas finished with 13 RBI, 11 walks, 10 runs, four doubles and one triple.

The entire pitching staff returns in Olsen, Knapp and junior Kristin Durborow. As a team, Centenary ranked third in the CSAC with an ERA of 2.43 and second with 250 strikeouts. The Cyclones limited opponents to a .233 batting average and posted 23 complete games. Durborow was just as effective as her teammates, going 10-6 with a 3.04 ERA. She finished with 10 complete games, two shutouts and 99 strikeouts.

“Our pitching staff is set with everyone returning from last season,” said Broking. “We look forward to the combined solid efforts of Olsen, Durborow and Knapp who will be sharing the ball in the circle for us. They pitched great in 2009 and we expect them to perform even better this year.”

Defensively, Centenary looks to remain strong. The Cyclones posted a team fielding percentage of .943, third in the CSAC. Nine players finished with a fielding percentage over. 900. On the infield, Angelica Ruiz, Veverka and transfer Gabrielle Pellegrino will handle the middle while Jessica Fane, Knapp and Dundas will man the corners. Knapp recorded 157 putouts and a fielding percentage of .966 from the first base position. Freshman Cara Montferrat looks to replace the departed Veres at the catcher position.

The outfield will have to replace two starters, as Megan Dunne and Stephanie Bickel each graduated. But Papa looks to improve on her impressive 2009 season and the team brought in freshmen Kelly O’Dell, Jennifer Csiewicz and junior transfer Nicole Fleming.

“The outfield will be anchored by Papa,” said Broking. “She is coming off an explosive year in 2009 and she will help guide a solid group of freshmen, all of whom will contribute to the Cyclones’ success in the 2010 season.”

Broking named Olsen, Durborow and Knapp the team captains.

“Our three captains lead by example,” she said. “They have a hard work ethic and they do an excellent job motivating their teammates to improve. Their versatile personalities will ensure a powerful team this season.”

The Lady Cyclones will be playing their conference games at a new field this year, the Field of Dreams in Independence Township, N.J. The team kicks off their season with a challenging Spring Break schedule in Orlando, Fla. They return to New Jersey to take on in-state rival Drew on March 24 before opening conference action at Gwynedd-Mercy on March 27. CC hosts its first home game of the season on March 30 against FDU-Florham before facing three-straight CSAC opponents, including defending champion Neumann on the road on April 6.

Centenary closes out its 2010 campaign with a road game at Baptist Bible on May 1 before the conference tournament begins. Although the Cyclones were picked to finish second, their goal is to finish what they started and win the CSAC.

Centenary Picked To Finish Second In CSAC

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (February 26, 2010) – The Centenary softball team was picked to place second in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) preseason poll after a vote by league coaches, it was announced Thursday. The Lady Cyclones received four first-place votes and tallied 133 points, trailing only defending champion Neumann, which earned 135 points and six first-place votes.

Centenary finished the CSAC Tournament tied with Immaculata for second after rain canceled the final day of competition and Neumann was declared the winner. The Lady Cyclones then placed second in the ECAC South Tournament.

In her first season, head coach Kim Broking was named CSAC Coach of the Year after she guided the team to a program-record 23 regular-season wins, including 17 in conference action. The Cyclones finished the season with a record of 27-14.

Centenary returns five All-CSAC performers, as junior Sarah Olsen (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Pope John XXIII) earned First Team honors, senior Lorena Papa (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown), junior Ali Knapp (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) and sophomore Caitlin Veverka (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy) received Second Team accolades and sophomore Danielle Dundas (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy) was named Honorable Mention. Centenary Softball To Host ‘Tricky Tray’

Centenary softball will host its annual Tricky Tray on Saturday, Nov. 21.

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (November 18, 2009) – The Centenary softball team will host its annual Tricky Tray, Saturday, Nov. 21, starting at 6:30 p.m., in the Reeves Student Center. Admission is 10 dollars, which includes a sheet of 25 tickets and one Special. The drawing will begin at 7:30 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the softball program as it works to raise funds for a trip to Florida in 2010.

The team has over 200 baskets for fans to bid on. Fans can buy as many tickets as they wish, then simply place tickets in the basket or baskets they want. At 7:30 p.m., a ticket will be drawn out of each basket, and whoever’s name is on that ticket wins the basket.

There are also Specials and Super Specials, which include an onyx and diamond necklace and a 26” flat screen television. The raffle works the same way, although with a different type of ticket.

Last year, the team gave away more than 200 baskets, and they hope to do even better this season. For more information, contact Centenary softball head coach Kim Broking at 908-852-1400 ext. 2906 or brokingk@centenarycollege.edu.

Centenary Softball Earns NFCA All-Academic Team Honors

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (October 5, 2009) – The Centenary softball team was named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) 2008-09 All-Academic Team, the organization announced. The Lady Cyclones posted a team GPA of 3.284, good for 29th-best in Division III. Centenary was one of 77 teams given NFCA All-Academic honors.

“I am very proud of the team,” said head coach Kim Broking. “The girls work hard all year long.  As a team they maintain a high GPA while remaining organized enough to practice, work out on their own and prepare for fundraising and community service opportunities. It shows the individual character of the players, as well as the ability for them to think about the world outside of Centenary softball.  Through their initiative we have raised nearly over 1,500 dollars in the past year for Breast Cancer Awareness.”

CC had a banner year on and off the field during Broking's first year as head coach. Not only did the team succeed in the classroom, Centenary set program-records in total wins (27), regular-season wins (23) and conference victories (17). The Lady Cyclones finished second in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament and earned their first-ever berth to the ECAC South Tournament. The team reached the championship game before falling to Misericordia. For her efforts, Broking was named CSAC Coach of the Year.
