Overtime Goal Knocks Men's Soccer Out of ECAC's![]() FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (November 12, 2008) - The Centenary men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker at Farmingdale State, losing 3-2 in overtime in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Tournament. The Cyclones got off to a very fast start, as Jimmy Corey (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) scored a goal in the game’s opening minute. Corey’s goal came off an assist from Chris Guadagno (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) and it gave Centenary the very early 1-0 lead. Farmingdale, unfazed by the early deficit, was able to collect themselves and tie the game up on a goal by Ryan Paul. With the game tied at one, it was the Rams who were now on the attack and it wouldn’t be long after their first goal that they would find the net again. Ryan Lang was found on a cross by Paul and was able to tuck the ball into the back of the net, before Damien DiBuono (Succasunna, N.J./Morris Catholic) the Cyclones keeper was able to recover across the goal line. Farmingdale now had a 2-1 lead which they took into halftime. Into the second half both teams traded scoring chances, but it wasn’t until a long throw in chance that the Cyclones would again find the net. Ryan Bilello (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) notched his 7th assist of the season, when he tossed his throw into the box, and Guadagno was able to flick it past the Ram keeper, tying the score at two. The remaining 30 minutes of regulation were played scoreless and the game went into golden goal overtime. In overtime the Cyclones, playing a man down after a red card, fell victim to a Rams combination which left Ryan Stanridge one on one with DiBuono. Stanridge was able to finish the play, giving Farmingdale the 3-2 victory. Fourth-seeded Farmingdale will now travel to No. 1 William Paterson on Saturday for the semi-finals of the ECAC Metro Championship. For the Cyclones, this loss ends their season. The Cyclones finished the year with an overall record of 10-10-1. They placed five of their players on the CSAC All-Conference Teams. Boxscore
One Goal Enough to Hold Off Cyclones in CSAC PlayoffsSCRANTON, Pa. (November 4, 2008) - In a physical and emotional battle, it was Marywood’s Anthony Roma’s free kick in the games 62nd minute which was the difference, as Marywood came away with the victory 1-0. Marywood now advances on in the playoffs to take on top seeded Cabrini College. Meanwhile although Centenary’s CSAC season has ended, the Cyclones are looking forward to berths in other post season tournaments. In the first half, Centenary had some early adversity to overcome when starter Sean Chirico (Oak Ridge, N.J./Morris Catholic) was taken off the field with an ankle injury, however, with some strong play from Centenary’s reserves, they didn’t miss a beat. Both teams clearly set the tone of the game in the first half, and that tone was defense. Marywood outshot the Cyclones 7-2 but neither team could find the net, as the teams took a 0-0 score into halftime. For the second half again Centenary had some more injuries, and turned to the reserves again, this time though Marywood would capitalize. The game changed when Marywood sent a long ball over the top in which in a foot race Marywood’s Richard Fifi and Centenary’s Pat Trivino (Lyndhurst, N.J./St. Mary’s) became entangled resulting in a red card for Trivino, and a free kick for Marywood. It was on this free kick that Roma was able to bend into the side netting, and put Marywood on top 1-0. For the game’s final 25 minutes, Centenary had to get a goal back, and do so being a man down after the red card. And although they had a great scoring chance when Matt Winkler’s (Great Meadows, N.J./Hackettstown) lefty shot sailed just wide of the net Marywood’s defense led by All-Conference selections Mikhail Attong and goalie Jared El-Gayeh were too solid, and Marywood held onto the game 1-0. For Centenary, Damien DiBuono (Succasunna, N.J./Morris Catholic) was big in the net all game, making five saves. Boxscore

Cyclones On Wrong End of High Scoring Game(10/25/08) In what was a rainy and muddy Saturday afternoon, it was Immaculata’s five second half goals that gave them the victory over Centenary in men’s soccer, 5-2. This win improves the Mighty Macs to 8-7-2 on the year, while lowering Centenary’s record to 9-7-1 on for the season. The game started off good for the Cyclones early, when Ryan Bilello (West Hempstead, NY/West Hempstead) found a loose ball in the box to knock home his second goal of the season, and give Centenary it’s only lead at 1-0. The Cyclones carried that lead into the second half, but just ten seconds into the start of the second half, Kieran Keelan of the Cyclones was able to get a breakaway and beat Damien DiBuono (Succasunna, NJ/Morris Catholic) and tie the game at one goal apiece. The game wouldn’t stay that way for long, just four minutes later, Immaculata’s Chris Conlon was able to make good on a turnover, and dribbled in to score his first goal of the season and the Mac’s took the lead 2-1. The scoring didn’t stop there for Immaculata, when a ball got played out wide and Mitchell Torh swung in a cross in which Keelan was able to finish, and the Mac’s then lead 3-1. Eleven minutes later, Chris Guadagno (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) found himself just outside the goal box with the ball where he was able to dribble around the keeper, and tucked the ball into the side netting bringing the Cyclones to within one goal, 3-2. Unfortunately that was as close as Centenary would get, when just two minutes later, off a rebound from a corner Alan Lorentz of the Mac’s hit a one time shot that rattled the cage and made the score 4-2. The final goal of the game was again scored by Keelan, giving him the hat trick, off a long punt which turned into a breakaway in which he finished, making the final score 5-2. DiBuono of the Cyclones made nine total saves on the day. Boxscore Cyclones Score Eight in Win Over Baptist Bible

The Cyclones third goal came when Chris Hill (Flanders, NJ/Gil St. Bernard) hit a free kick in from about 20 yards out that gave the Cyclones the 3-0 advantage. The first half scoring was finished off when Hill scored again on a lay off pass from Chris Guadagno (West Milford, NJ/West Milford). The second half was much of the same for the Cyclones. Damien Gallegos (Rutherford, NJ/Queen of Peace) opened the second period scoring when he was able to head in a corner kick from Corey pushing the Cyclones lead to 5-0. Brian Esposito (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) got the sixth goal of the game on Corey’s second assist. Corey then found the net for his second goal of the game on an assist from Hill. To finish out the scoring, Andrew Eitel (Byram, NJ/Morris Catholic) got his first career goal when he found the back of the net on a loose ball in the box. In the net for the Cyclones, Damien DiBuono (Succasunna, NJ/Morris Catholic), Jason Rogers (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) and Peter Florucci (Barre, VT/Spaulding High) combined for the team’s sixth shut out of the year. Boxscore Ramapo's First Half Goal Enough To Hold Cyclones Off
(10/22/08) Justin Stone’s goal in the first half was enough to give Ramapo the 1-0 win over Centenary on a crisp fall afternoon. This win improves Ramapo to 7-8-2, while dropping Centenary to 9-6-1. In the opening half of action both teams were struggling to put together offensive chances. Ramapo turned to their bench and some fresh bodies to find their answer. James Gibson got a ball played out wide to him and he was able to serve it across finding the foot of Stone where he was able to beat the keeper giving the lead to the Roadrunners. In the second half it was the Cyclones who were trying hard to get the equalizer but Ramapo’s offense kept Centenary honest in the back. Both teams in the half had very good looks at the net, but neither team could find the back of it. Ramapo’s defense stayed solid and Centenary was not able to get the tying goal, leaving the game at 1-0. Jason Rogers (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) played a strong game in net for the Cyclones making five saves, several of them at point blank range, while Ian Tighe was able to stop all of Centenary’s shots on goal giving him a shutout his sixth of the season. Boxscore Chirico's Goal In Overtime Lifts Cyclones Past Griffins
(10/20/08) The men’s soccer team went on the road to take on the Gwynedd-Mercy Griffins in an important game in CSAC play. It took 106 minutes of soccer to get a result when Sean Chirico (Oak Ridge, NJ/Morris Catholic) picked the perfect time to get his first goal, scoring it in overtime to lift the Cyclones past the Griffins 2-1. After a scoreless first half, it was the Griffins who got on the board first when Matthew Meier scored on a breakaway to take the lead over Centenary, 1-0 early in the second half. Soon after, however, the Cyclones leading scorer Chris Hill (Flanders, NJ/Gil St. Bernard) converted a penalty kick and tied the game at 1-1. The game remained tied at the end of regulation, and through the first overtime period, until Chirico ripped a shot from 25 yards out, which deflected off a Gwynedd-Mercy defender and found its way into the back of the net, giving the Cyclones the 2-1 victory. This win now improves the Cyclones to 9-5-1 overall and 3-2 in the CSAC and they now sit in third place in the conference. For Gwynedd-Mercy the loss drops their overall record to 3-11-1 while being 2-2 in the CSAC. Marywood Gets Goal In Each Half To Top Cyclones(10/14/08) In a battle of two teams tied for second place in the CSAC. It was Marywood who got the best of Centenary with a final score of 2-0. In the first half it was Centenary who was putting the pressure to Marywood’s defense early, and nearly got on the board first when Chris Guadagno (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) flicked on a long throw, but Marywood keeper Jared El Gayeh was able to make the one handed diving save to keep the score tied at zero. Minutes later however the Pacers got the break, when a foul was called inside the box resulting in a penalty kick. Anthony Roma of Marywood took and scored the kick and gave Marywood the 1-0 lead they took into half. The second half was played mostly even with both teams getting their fair share of chances on net. Marywood who had gotten close several times prior on the long throw, were finally able to convert one when Brett Megee was able to flick a header on net off the long throw from Sean O’Day and this gave Marywood a commanding 2-0 lead. The Cyclones despite putting heavy pressure on Marywood, sending multiple players forward were unable to find any cracks in the Pacer defense, and Marywood was able to hold on to their lead, and took the game 2-0. For the Pacers El Gayeh was big in the net all day, while Cyclones keeper Damien DiBuono (Succasunna, NJ/Morris Catholic) made several key saves, totaling four on the afternoon.
