Old Westbury and Centenary Play to 5-5 Double Overtime Tie

(10/31/05) Old Westbury, NY -- After trailing 3-0, the Old Westbury mens soccer team bounced back to tie the game at five, forcing overtime in todays Skyline Conference finale. The two teams battled through the darkness through scoreless overtime frames, resulting in a 5-5 draw. The Panthers finish the season with 5-11-1 overall record and a 1-7-1 mark in the Skyline conference.

4:45 into the game, Steve Bodei received a cross from the far side of field and shot the ball on the run behind Panther goalkeeper Brian Hicks for the 1-0 lead. The Cyclones took a 2-0 lead 12 minutes later when Brian Engisch sent the ball from the backfield in the air over the midfield line. Kissinger Barreau, breaking from the left side, met up with the ball and beat Hicks one-on-one. Josh Stearns added another goal at the 35:01 mark, giving Centenary a 3-0 advantage.

Old Westbury finally responded, getting itself on the board with a penalty kick three and a half minutes later. Centenary goalie Donnie Iudica committed a foul, resulting in the free kick. Alex Renwart connected on the free kick, making the score 3-1 at the half.

At the 50-minute mark, Brandon DeNoyer scored for Old Westbury, cutting the lead to one. After a defensive miscue by the Cyclones resulted in a scramble in front of the net, Shawn Holland tipped it to DeNoyer, who rotated and tapped the ball into the net.

Centenarys Barreau and Andrew Clifton scored back-to-back goals over a two minute span to take a 5-3 lead, seemingly putting the Panthers out of the game. Old Westbury, however, once again answered, as Renwart blasted a shot into the net from 10-yards out, kicking off the first of three-straight Panther goals.

Bryan Smiths goal off a pass from Clifton Jourdain made the score 5-4 as time began to run out. The Panthers continued to attack over the next three minutes and, as the field began to darken, Holland knotted the score at five with a header off of a throw-in from Kyle Nolan with just 48 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.

DeNoyer nearly tallied the game-winner in the first 10-minute OT session, but his header from 5 yards away was stopped by Iudica. The Panthers had another attempt late in the second overtime session, but Iudica once again blocked a header, this time from Holland on the same play in which he scored the game-tying goal earlier in regulation.

Neither team connected in overtime and the game ended 5-5 after 110:00 minutes of soccer.

Centenary Soccer Drops Doubleheader

Following a few substitutions off the bench in the 70th minute, the scoring re-opened as the visitors notched three goals in a stretch of 4:30 minutes.  Two by Zak Yermolenko (Union, NJ/River Dell), one by Vinny Porta (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) and one from Joe Caamano (Linden, NJ/Linden), put the game out of reach.  RU-N's Caamano finished with a game-high five points (1 goal, 3 assists), as eight different Scarlet Raiders registered points in the victory.

In the first half, the Centenary men jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Joshua Stearns (Mt. Visiting Medgar Evers Takes Down Cyclones 4-1.

(09/17/05) Hackettstown, NJ -- Earlier this evening in a game shortened because of darkness, visiting Medgar Evers College defeated Centenary 4-1 in their non-conference Men's Soccer match.

Following a start that was delayed by more than an hour, the Cougars of MEC jumped off the bus and onto the attack.  After just nine minutes of play Dwayne Hassing connected on a scoring chance to the visitors the early advantage.  Medgar Evers again converted on a second unassisted goal, when Hugh Chen found the back of the net.  This pushed the Cougars lead to 2-0, which they kept until halftime.

Early in the second half the host Cyclone seemed to put it together making aggressive offensive runs, and controlling the ball.  In the 49th minute, Centenary freshman Josh Stearns (Mt.Laurel/Holy Cross) took a pass from Justin DeFeo (Hawthorne/Hawthorne) and stuck it past the MEC goalkeeper, trimming the margin to one.  The visitors did not take long to answer however, as just two minutes later Hugh Chen was awarded a penalty kick, for being taken down on a one-on-one break with Centenary goalie.  Chen promptly pushed the lead back to two goals at 3-1.  From there on out, the Cyclones were unable to put together another much needed push for the rest of the half.  Medgar Evers' Craig John added a fourth score for the Cougars with just over two minutes remaining.  The victory improves MEC to 2-5-1 on the season.  Goalie Kenyata LeBraun made eight saves to record the road win.

As for Centenary, John Osorio (Dover/Dover) also made eight saves in the opposing net.  The Cyclones play again this Thursday in another non-conference match-up, this time they travel to Brooklyn College for a game at 4:30pm.

Cyclones Soccer Takes Down St. Joe's 1-0

(09/17/05) Hackettstown, NJ -- Earlier this afternoon the Centenary Men's Soccer team defeated St. Joseph's-Patchogue 1-0, for their first Skyline Conference victory of the season.

In a very defensive first half both teams had only a few scoring chances that were turned away by both keepers and solid team defense at both ends.  SJC did mange a 9-2 shot advantage, although the scoreboard stayed at a 0-0 tie through the first 45 minutes of play.  In the second half, the host Cyclones began to mount a few offensive runs that were again held off by SJC keeper Mark Tripi (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place).

In the 88th minute, as the game began to look destined for overtime, the Centenary offensive made another break through run.  The Cyclones Pat Glackin (Whitehouse Station/Immaculata) took a solid shot from just a few feet out that was saved by Tripi.  Then on the rebound, freshman Pat Trivino (Lyndhurst/St. Mary's) hammered it into the back of the net for the Cyclone goal. The home squad was able to play possession soccer for the final minutes, and notch their second consecutive victory and first on their Skyline schedule.  Despite out-shooting Centenary 15-6, the loss drops the visiting Golden Eagles to 2-3 overall, and 0-1 in the conference.

The win improves Centenary men to 2-3 overall, 1-0 in the Skyline. Both goalkeepers had excellent

2005 Men's Soccer Gearing Up.

Centenary's Men's Soccer program heads into its second season under the direction of Head Coach Keith O'Connor.

In his first year with the Cyclones, O'Connor lead the team to an overall record 4-13-1, giving the men one more victory then the year before. Their 3-5-1 record in the Skyline Conference was good enough for a sixth place finish, which included a three-game unbeaten streak in the season's final week. Victories over Yeshiva University and Mount Saint Mary College, and a 1-1 draw versus Old Westbury, left the Cyclones with something to look forward to heading into this season.

With eight starters back from a team that returns 10 players off of last year's roster, Centenary head coach Keith O'Connor has high hopes for the 2005 season. Among the starters are the team's top three goals scorers, senior Manny Nieves, junior Kissinger Barreau, and sophomore Andrew Clifton. This trio accounted for 60% of the Cyclone offense a year ago and will be looking for more of the same this fall.

Barreau returns as Centenary's top scorer, netting eight goals in 2004. Throughout most of the season, he was ranked in the conference's top five for goals per game and in the top ten for points per game. He joins Nieves as the two up front players for Coach O'Connor who are able to create shots. Nieves, who normally works opposite Barreau, tallied five goals a season ago, while playing a very aggressive forward position.

Clifton is the team's decision maker, as general of the Cyclones midfield. His distribution of the ball last year on the attack, was something that enabled Nieves and Barreau the chances they capitalized on. Clifton closed out his freshman year with two goals and an assist.

Senior Steve Bodei also returns this fall as the team's defensive anchor and veteran of the back row. Bodei, a two year captain of the Cyclones, is one of the team's most consistent players. His leadership both on and off the field is something makes him standout within the Centenary lineup. Both Nieves and Bodei were selected to the NSCAA East Region's Academic All-American Honorable Mention team following last season.

Sophomore Justin DeFeo is another underclassman who brings great enthusiasm to the program. Last year DeFeo was the only Cyclones player to be nominated for the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week award. With the solid group of returning players, the addition of three transfers, and four true freshman, Coach O'Connor and the Cyclones are looking to make a run at the Skyline Conference playoffs this fall. Their schedule is one that will test them early, and give a good idea as to where the team is in September.

The Men open the year at Drew University's Fall Festival, where they take on SUNY-New Paltz. They then host inter-state rival Montclair State in their home opener the following week. The Conference schedule then gets underway in mid-September, slating the Cyclones against talented teams such as USMMA, St. Joseph's - Patchogue, and the 7th ranked team in the country (pre-season) Stevens Institute of Technology.
