Pinnella is Golden, Cyclones Win In Overtime, 1-0
SCRANTON, Pa. (October 7, 2009) The men's soccer was looking for their first conference win on Wednesday night and though it took extra time to do so, they found it at Marywood. After 90 scoreless minutes, sophomore Andrew Pinnella (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) was able to score off a corner kick for the golden goal, 1-0 win. The win puts the Cyclones at 1-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) and raises their season record to 4-7 while it drops Marywood to 3-6-1 and 1-1 in the CSAC. Marywood outshot Centenary in the opening half 4-2 but behind the strength of three Jason Rogers' (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) saves, the Pacers were kept off the board. In the second half, Centenary nearly put the game away when a shot was fired a shot on net but was just tipped over the crossbar by Marywood goalie Jared El-Gayeh. Just two minutes into the overtime period, a loose ball off a corner kick was cleared out to the top of the box where an eager Pinnella was waiting to rip a right-footed shot into the back of the net and give the Cyclones the win. Next up for Centenary will be a strong test in Cabrini College, on Ocotober 12. The game is set to kickoff at 3:00pm. Neumann Tops the Cyclones in CSAC PlayHACKETTSTOWN, N.J. Also tallying goals for Neumann was Ryan Bushbeck, Nathan Beideman and Sergio Garcia while Andrew Leissing and Andy Attah both picked up assists. For the Cyclones, Jason Rogers (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) made five saves while Tyler DeCraine (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) made one. The Cyclones will look to find magic in the night in their next game as they travel to face conference foe Marywood University on October 7, at 7:00pm.
Cyclones Looking for First Conference Win
HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (October 2, 2009) – Tomorrow the men’s soccer team will be taking part in a home soccer double-header when they face Neumann University at 3:00pm on Cyclone Field. Centenary is coming into the game off of a loss versus Philadelphia Biblical University on Thursday, 3-2. The loss put the Cyclones at 3-6 for the season, but just 0-1 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC). They are facing a worthy opponent on Saturday in Neumann. The Knights are 4-4-1 overall and 2-0 in CSAC play. They have recorded conference wins over Keystone College, 5-1, and Rosemont College, 1-0. The story thus far for Centenary has been the overall balanced attack it has brought. 13 different Cyclones has recorded points this season, while 10 different have recorded goals. Among them are a pair of midfielders, senior Sean Chirico (Oak Ridge, N.J./Morris Catholic) and freshman Alex Asoera (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) who are leading the team in goals with three each. Senior Chris Guadagno (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) is next on the team with five points (two goals and one assist). This upcoming stretch of games for the Cyclones will be their most important as they play conference games the rest of the way. After the Neumann game, Centenary will be taking its act on the road to play at Marywood University on October 7, at 7:00 pm. Cyclones Come Up One Goal Short In CSAC Play
LANGHORNE, Pa. (October 1, 2009) – The men’s soccer team opened up their Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) schedule on unfamiliar turf as they traveled to Philadelphia Biblical University for the contest. Though Centenary battled, it ultimately fell to the Crimson Eagles by a score of 3-2. The Cyclones’ record is lowered to 3-6 but just 0-1 in CSAC play while PBU evens its record to 5-5 and 1-1 in the CSAC. The Cyclones were able to seize the lead in the early goings of this game when they drew a free kick in the ninth minute. Senior Sean Chirico (Oak Ridge, N.J./Morris Catholic) sent the ball past the PBU keeper for his third goal of the season. Centenary held that lead until the 23rd minute when Philadelphia Biblical’s Justin Hays was able to find the net and tie the score at one. Hays wasn’t finished and just four minutes later gave PBU a 2-1 lead by netting his second goal of the game. The Crimson Eagles held that lead until the opening two minutes of the second half when Centenary’s Edgar Escobar-Castro (Lawrence, N.J./Lawrence) broke free and scored his first goal of the season, tying the game at 2-2. This tie was brief however, because just four minutes later PBU was able to get the go ahead and eventual game-winning goal. This time it was a cross served by Hays which teammate Phil Haas was able to finish to make the score its final, 3-2. The Cyclones will need to have a short memory though as they are right back into conference play in two days when CSAC foe, Neumann University Knights march into Hackettstown for the 3:00pm start. This game will be the second half a soccer double-header as the women’s soccer team opens up with a contest against Gwynedd-Mercy at 1:00pm. Cyclones Fall to Eastern University, 3-0
HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (September 29, 2009) – After back to back victories the men’s soccer team could not make it three in a row as they fell to the Eastern University Eagles, 3-0 earlier this afternoon. Centenary’s record now lowers to 3-5 while the victory improves the Eagles to 4-5. Both teams played scoreless through most of the first half until the 32nd minute when Eastern’s Terry Fry got free on the outside and fired a shot in on goal which Jason Rogers (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) was able to save, however, the rebound bounced in front of the net where Braden Gross of the Eagles was waiting to tap in for the lone goal of the half. Centenary had its chances and earned a free kick deep in Eastern territory late into the half yet could not convert and the half ended with Centenary trailing, 1-0. In the opening minutes of the second half Centenary kept Eastern off the board and remained one goal down, nearly tying the score on a dangerous cross from Alex Khouri (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty High) but the Cyclone strikers were a step offside canceling the try. The Eagles took this opportunity to net their second goal of the game, this time it was leading scorer Drew Bixler who got the tally when he finished off a pass from Ryan Rohrer. In the game’s closing seconds, the Eagles earned a penalty kick which Matt Demascola calmly knocked in to give the Eagles their third and final goal of the game and the 3-0 result. In the defeat, Rogers of Centenary was brilliant in the net. The sophomore keeper made several acrobatic stops and finished the day with 10 saves. Eastern’s keeper, Jon Crowder, finished making two saves. Cyclones Net Six Goals in Easy Win Over Purchase
HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (September 26, 2009) – The men’s soccer team got on the scoreboard early and often in their 6-1 victory over the Purchase College Panthers. Eight different Cyclones’ recorded a point in this game and senior Sean Chirico (Oak Ridge, N.J./Morris Catholic) finished the day with two goals. The Cyclones improved their record to 3-4 with the win, while Purchase dropped to 3-4-1 after the loss. In the second half Centenary remained on the attack and again it didn’t take long for CC to put up another goal, this time it was Alex Asoera (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) who beat several defenders before firing a right-footed past the Panthers goalkeeper and put Centenary up 4-0. Purchase was next to score and got its only goal of the game when Nick Esposito converted a penalty kick and made the score 4-1. The Cyclones wouldn’t let up let up however, as senior Chris Guadagno (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) found fellow senior Damien DiBuono (Succasunna, N.J./Morris Catholic) streaking and hit him in stride for DiBuono to hammer home and score his first career goal. The Cyclones sixth and final goal came when Dan Charkowski (Wayne Hills, N.J./Wayne Hills) sent a cross field pass which Michael Goepp (Hackettstown, N.J./Pope John XXIII) finished for his first goal of the season. Of the six Cyclones goals, four of them were assisted. The Cyclones also held the advantage in corner kicks, 11-0. Chirico finished the day with two goals while goalkeepers Jason Rogers (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) and Tyler DeCraine (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) combined to make three saves. The win for the Cyclones is their second as they now climb to 2-4. With the loss, Brooklyn falls to 2-4 for the year. Though the first half was scoreless, both teams saw plenty of chances. Centenary was on the attack first and was nearly on the board when a cross sent into the box was nearly headed in by Jimmy Corey (Jackson, N.J./Jackson). It didn’t stop there as the Cyclones kept up the pressure, yet were unable to find the back of the net. Midway through the half, Brooklyn began gathering chances yet the Centenary defense and goalie Jason Rogers (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) kept the ball out of the net. NEWBURGH, N.Y. (September 16, 2009) – In what was an evenly played match, the men’s soccer team suffered a heart-breaking loss to Mount Saint Mary’s late Wednesday night. After 108 minutes of scoreless action, the Knights (3-2-1) were able to find the goal on a free kick by Kevin Ryan. This loss, a non-conference one, was the Cyclones' (1-4) fourth of the season. In the first and second period the action was equally distributed among both teams. In the first half, one of Centenary’s best opportunities came from the left foot of junior Dan Charkowski (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills). Charkowski beat several players and launched a shot that sailed just high over the frame. The center midfield tandem of Sean Chirico (Oak Ridge, N.J./Morris Catholic) and Chris Guadagno (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) provided most of the offensive pressure in the second half. Chirico finished the night with four shots on goal, while Guadagno ripped three. This night, however, belonged to Mount Saint Mary’s. With just 1:31 remaining in the second overtime, the Knights were awarded a free kick after a hand ball. Freshman Kevin Ryan was then able to sail a bending ball just past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Jason Rogers (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills). Centenary will look to put this game past them and begin to prepare for their next contest which is on Monday, Sept. 21. The Cyclones will be playing Brooklyn College and the game is set to kickoff at 4:00pm.
Centenary Men’s Soccer Raising Awareness With ‘Shots For Autism’HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (September 16, 2009) – The Centenary men’s soccer team has partnered with Autism Speaks to raise awareness about autism with its Shots For Autism Campaign, head coach Keith O’Connor announced. The Cyclones will be accepting donations throughout the season with all proceeds going to Autism Speaks. Autism Speaks has grown into the nation's largest autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism, increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. For more information, you can visit their website at www.autismspeaks.org. Autism is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). The other pervasive developmental disorders are PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified), Asperger's Syndrome, Rett Syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. Many parents and professionals refer to this group as Autism Spectrum Disorders. Today, it is estimated that one in every 150 children is diagnosed with autism, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. An estimated 1.5 million individuals in the U.S. and tens of millions worldwide are affected by autism. For every shot that the Centenary men’s soccer team takes, each pledged donation will go to Autism Speaks. For example, last season the Cyclones tallied 329 shots, which meant that anyone who pledged 10 cents donated 32.90 to the foundation. The team will also accept any other donations through the men’s soccer office or through collections at all of this year’s home matches. If you are interested in changing the future for all who struggle with Autism spectrum disorders, please contact assistant men’s soccer coach Steve Bodei at bodeis@centenarycollege.edu or 908-852-1400, ext. 2903. This effort was good enough to crown the Cyclones runners up in the tournament. Live Stats Available For Weekend Tournament: Centenary Men's Soccer 2009 Preview
Gone is the program’s all-time goal scorer Chris Hill, but the Centenary men’s soccer team believes it can still surpass 2008’s campaign, which included 10 wins, a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) tournament and an ECAC South tournament berth. “Despite our success last season, finishing 10-10-1 was disappointing,” said head coach Keith O’Connor. “For the standards of our staff and our team, having a .500 record was not where we wanted to be. Our expectations were much higher.” The team lost not only Hill, but other key players as well, but the coaching staff brought in a group of newcomers who should step in right away and fill the gaps. The returning players include a trio of all-conference winners in junior Chris Guadagno, who was named First Team All-CSAC, as well as Honorable Mention All-CSAC recipients Andrew Pinnella and Matt Winkler. Furthermore, because of injuries suffered by five student-athletes last season, 14 then-newcomers were asked to fill in right away. They accepted the challenge and successfully contributed to the success of the team, picking up experience that will be valuable in 2009. “We most certainly added depth to each position so we are looking forward to a lot of guys getting significant minutes this year,” said O’Connor. The forward position is probably the spot that now has the most depth. Pinella, who scored five goals and tallied four assists in 2008, returns, as does Damien Gallegos, who tallied two goals and will be expected to play a key role as an offensive spark off the bench. The coaches are looking for big things from freshman Alex Asouera, who is one of the newcomers on the team and is fighting for a spot in the rotation. The midfield includes a pair of returning players in Guadagno and Alex Walters. Guadagno was second on the team with eight goals and 17 points in 2008 and he expects to improve this season. Walters tallied one goal and two assists while playing in nine games. They should be able to command the midfield against any opponent. Centenary also has depth on the outside in sophomores Michael Goepp and Jimmy Corey, who moves from forward spot back to outside midfield spot. Winkler looks to improve on his three-goal, four-assist performance of 2008. The team added depth to the defense with the addition of a pair of freshmen who should see significant time right away, possibly even starts. Alex Khouri played both midfield and defense at Liberty High School in Eldersburg, Md., and Pierre Massena is a 6’1 defender from Hewitt, N.J., a DePaul Catholic graduate. Senior Damien DiBuono, last year’s starting goalkeeper, moves to the forward position after suffering an injury during the winter. But last season’s backup, Jason Rogers, will step in and the coaches expect him to do very well. Rogers saw action in 10 games, playing just under 600 minutes and recording 30 saves while tallying a 4-1 record with one shutout. He received valuable game experience last year and has looked very good in preseason. His backup will be Tyler DeCraine, a sophomore from Roxbury, N.J. The coaching staff brought in four freshmen and two transfers, and the rookies should see playing time right away, either in a starting role or off the bench. The two transfers, Goepp and Derrick Grant will be expected to contribute as well. O’Connor named Guadagno, junior Daniel Charkowski and Walters the three captains. Guadagno is a two-time captain while the other two are serving as captains for the first time. “The three captains each bring something different to the table which makes the core of the three of them a great leadership trio,” said O’Connor. “We expect that they will lead our team throughout the year. Other seniors we expect to provide leadership will be Sean Chirico, who is a back, and who will be the core leader of our defensive unit, so we need him to show good leadership on and off the field. Jason Rogers stepping in and being our starting goalkeeper now means that he is the ultimate leader when we are on the field, as he is our last defender. He can see the whole field and hopefully this year will be more vocal as to leading our team from top to bottom.” The team also added a new member to the coaching staff with recent Centenary graduate Ryan Bilello. Bilello finished his Cyclone career in 2008 after playing and starting for three seasons. A team captain in 2008, he now steps into a different role as the Cyclones’ student-assistant coach. He has completed his advanced regional diploma through the NSCAA. “We are excited to have Ryan join the coaching staff,” said O’Connor. “We look forward to having him on staff as another set of eyes, someone to bounce ideas off of and contribute ideas as well.” With the addition of a new assistant coach, as well as a solid group of veterans and freshmen, things are looking up for the Centenary men’s soccer team as they are hoping to improve on the .500 record of last season.

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (August 27, 2009) – The Colonial States Athletic Conference men’s soccer pre-season poll was released by the league offices on Wednesday, and Centenary was picked to place fifth, receiving 63 points. The Cyclones finished one point worse than fourth-place team Marywood University. Picked unanimously as the league favorite was Cabrini College, who finished with a perfect 100 points while receiving all 10 of the league’s first place votes. In a tie for second place with 81 points was Immaculata University and Neumann University. The Cyclones will be returning All-Conference selection and senior midfielder Chris Guadagno (West Milford, N.J./West Milford). Guadagno had a solid junior campaign in which he scored eight goals and tallied one assist. Also returning to the fold is a pair of sophomore All-Conference selections in Matt Winkler (Great Meadows, N.J./Hackettstown) and Andrew Pinnella (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan). The pair combined for eight goals and eight assists. The Cyclones begin their season on Tuesday, Sept. 1 as they will take on Ramapo College. They are looking to avenge last season’s 1-0 loss at the hands of the Roadrunners.
