Kean Overpowers Cyclones In Loss

Appearing in the fourth quarter, freshman, Kyle McVay made four saves.

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (March 24, 2009) The men’s lacrosse team was overpowered by the visiting Cougars of Kean University. Kean (5-3) took control of the game from the start on way to securing a 16-3 victory over the Cyclones. The loss for the Cyclones, now their fourth straight, lowers their record to 1-4.

Using a deliberate and precise attack the Cougars jumped out to a seven to one lead at the half. The lone Centenary goal in the first half was scored by Matt Biringer (Brick, NJ/Brick) for his first goal of the season. In the second half Kean put up more goals in the third quarter and then five goals in the final quarter to finish the day with 16. Jason Rieg (Chester, NJ/West Morris) scored his team leading eighth goal in the third quarter and Biringer found the back of the net for the second time of the game. In the net for Centenary Kyle McVay (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) made four stops in just one quarter of action.

Kean was led by Anthony Bertucci who scored four goals. Also having a strong game was Eric Gillar who made a living playing behind the net and setting up his teammates to the tune of seven assists. John Gesumaria made a game high 10 saves for the Cougars.

Cyclones Looking to Bounce Back at Home vs. Kean

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (March 23, 2009) The men’s lacrosse team is hoping to get back on the winning side of things when they take on the Kean Cougars on Tuesday afternoon on Cyclone Field. The Cyclones (1-3) are looking to record their first win since March 9 when they beat Penn State-Abington 11-8. The Cougars (4-3) will not be an easy task however.

“Kean will certainly provide a stern test for us. They are very athletic on both ends of the ball and have a lot of experience,” said head coach Matt Klank. When talking about what his team needs to improve upon in order to turn things around Klank had this to say, “We need to excel in the fundamentals of the game in order to be successful. We need to handle the ball well, play with a passion, and be mentally engaged for 60 minutes.”

The Cyclones were last in action on March 21 as they were defeated by Stockton College 19-6. Kean’s last contest was a 7-4 defeat at the hands of Colorado College on March 19.

After Kean, Centenary is in action again on Saturday, March 23, facing No. 8 Cabrini College at home at 3:00 pm.

In the first quarter despite being outshot 17 to five the Cyclones were able to keep the score even at two to two. The two first quarter goals were both scored by Jason Rieg (Chester, NJ/West Morris). Stockton opened up a bit of a lead in the second quarter scoring three unanswered goals before Centenary was able to get back on the board with a goal from Travis Roy (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) which made the score 5-3 still in favor of the Osprey. Stockton scored four of the next five goals to close out the half leading 9-4.  The second half was more of the same as Stockton was able to score five goals in both the third and fourth quarters, while the Cyclones were only able to get one goal apiece in each quarter.

Sophomore Joe Swantoski picked up his first goal of the season in the loss.

MADISON, NJ (3/11/09)  In their second contest of the season the men’s lacrosse team was dropped by FDU-Madison 14-4 in Florham Park Wednesday night. This was the first loss of the season for the Cyclones, as their record is now lowered to 1-1. For the Devils of FDU this is their second win in a row and they are now 2-3 for the year.

Things started off well for Centenary as they struck first when 10 minutes into the first quarter Jason Rieg (Chester, NJ/West Morris) netted his fourth goal of the season giving CC the lead 1-0. Centenary could not hold off FDU however, as the Devils scored twice in the quarter's final three minutes to take a 2-1 lead. Over the next two quarters Centenary was outscored 11-1, their lone goal coming when Richard Brady (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) found Joe Swantoski (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) for his first goal of the season.

The Devils held a 13-2 advantage going into the fourth quarter but Centenary was able to net two more goals in the final quarter and hold the opposition to only one. Travis Roy (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) and Jonathan Agudo (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) scored the game’s last two goals making the final score 14-4.

Men's Lacrosse Set to Take on FDU-Madison

Junior Jason Rieg looks to continue his scoring as the Cyclones take on FDU-Madison.

MADISON, NJ (3/11/09)  The Centenary men’s lacrosse team is ready to play their second game of the season, a night game on the road, as they take on the Fairleigh-Dickinson Madison Devils. The Cyclones are hoping to keep the momentum they built after their 11-8 victory over Penn-State Abington on March 9.

In the win, junior Jason Rieg (Chester, NJ/Morris Knolls) finished the game with six total points, scoring three goals and assisting on three others. Senior attack Travis Roy (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) also recorded a hat trick as well as picking up four groundballs. In the net for CC, Kyle McVay (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick Twp.) and Brian Troilo (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) combined to make 10 saves on the day.

FDU is coming into tonight’s game with a record of 1-3. After dropping their first three games, the Devils bounced back with a win over Muhlenberg, 8-7. Currently they are led by Kevin Shadiack who has 11 goals and four assists on the season. The Devils’ goalie Alex Kajencki has started all four games, and has recorded 57 saves.

Rieg and Roy Net Hat Tricks in Opening Game Victory

Travis Roy

Hackettstown, NJ (3/9/09) The Centenary men’s lacrosse team opened their season on a chilly Monday afternoon taking on the visiting Penn-State Abington Lions. The Cyclones got the 11-8 victory behind Jason Rieg (Chester, NJ/West Morris) and Travis Roy (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park), who both finished with a hat trick. This victory for the Cyclones got them off on the right foot as their record now becomes 1-0. Penn-State Abington is still looking for their first win as the loss drops them to 0-2 on the season.

“Numbers were going to be a problem for us today. We lost a starting defenseman at practice during the week, and lost another starter early on in the game. We weren’t going to be able to do what we wanted to on defense,” said fifth-year head coach Matt Klank.

The Lions were able to jump on Centenary’s thin defensive line in the first quarter as they took a 2-1 lead on goals by Jordan Dipentino and Peter Seweryn. The Cyclones rebounded in the second period, scoring seven of the quarters’ 10 goals to open up a three goal lead at 8-5 at half.

Starting the second half, offense was the concern for Klank. “Although our offense was executing well, we didn’t shoot as good as we are able to. Our shooting as well as their goalie making many saves was definitely a concern for us,” he said.

The Cyclones responded in the third quarter as Rieg scored a goal and assisted on another, this one to Joe Swantoski (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) as Centenary took a 10-5 lead into the fourth quarter. In the fourth PSU Abington would not go quietly as Bill Kelly got his team back into the game when he scored in the opening minute to make the score 10-6. The Cyclones’ Jeffrey Prudente (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) took back the momentum, momentarily, when he scored to put his team back up five at 11-6. The Lions scored two more goals in the quarter, however, were not able to get any closer than three as Centenary’s defense tightened up and held onto the three goal lead for the final score, 11-8.

Looking forward, Coach Klank was happy with the effort, but wanted more. “The kids played hard considering we were short-handed, but we could have played smarter. That’s something we are going to look to do in the future.”
