BOXSCORE 2007 Men's Lacrosse Season PreviewThe Centenary Men’s Lacrosse team heads into this season with a high level of optimism. With the foundation laid down by 3rd year Head Coach Matthew Klank, the Cyclones look to improve off of their 5-9 mark from a year ago. With it being their final season in the Skyline Athletic Conference, they hope to make their 1st post-season appearance since the 2003 campaign. The attack line will be led by the team’s three leading scorers from last spring, Nate Small, Matt Rogers and Ryan Mangold. The trio contributed to 46% of the Cyclones goals last season and will be looked upon to carry the load once again. Small will also see time dropping back into the mid-field over the course of the season. Mangold is adept in moving off the ball and picking his times to attack. Rogers, a senior tri-captain is a force around the crease area and provides match-up problems. Newcomers Vic DeMaio and Rory Murray will be counted on more as the season progresses and they familiarize themselves with the offensive schemes. A pair of seniors, Ryan Loomis and Bryan Watkinson, look to lead a very young mid-field unit this season. Tied for second in goals last season, Loomis will be an additional offensive threat that teams must be prepared to stop. Freshman Jason Woodring will look to have an immediate impact with his speed and athletic ability. Travis Roy, Jerome Ferguson, Andrew Rogers and Matt Biringer will all compete for playing time and add quality depth to the rotation. Experience and leadership will be invaluable to the line of defenders this year for Coach Klank. Led by seniors Josh Strunk, Jamie Nowakowski, Jose Ramirez and Evan Woltman, Centenary looks to have great success in stopping opponents this spring. An honorable mention selection last season, Woltman, who is another tri-captain, will look to use his physical presence and athletic ability to become an all-conference player. Strunk and Nowakowski will be used as off-ball defenders. Talented freshman Eddie Montalvo has potential to be one of the best in the program’s history and will be a huge asset to the program. Geoff Ford’s technical skills along with his intimidating stature are going to be put to the test immediately. Richard Brady’s knowledge of the system will be a plus to have interchangeable parts on defense when needed. The goalie position will prove to be a very crucial spot in how far the Cyclones go this season. Competing for the starting position will be senior tri-captain Bart Rogers and sophomore Brian Troilo. Having played in 23 games in his collegiate career, Rogers will be looking to mentor Troilo with his experience and leadership. Troilo’s knowledge of the defensive alignments will be instrumental in him earning playing time. Centenary Hires Former Johns Hopkins All-American(8/23/06) Newly hired assistant Matt Pinto, a 2006 Preseason All-American at Johns Hopkins, joins the staff of Centenary Head Coach Matt Klank. Pinto a three-year starter at Hopkins from 2004-2006, as well as a member of the Blue Jays National Championship Team in 2005 will serve as the programs defensive coordinator and assist with the programs recruiting efforts. In addition to his accolades as a senior, Coach Pinto was named to the STX/USILA Honorable Mention All-American Team as a junior after anchoring a defense that finished the season second in the nation in scoring defense (6.94).
