Cyclones Pick Up First Conference Win Over Neumann College
DREXEL HILL, PA (April 4, 2009) The men’s lacrosse team picked up their first conference win of the season beating CSAC opponent Neumann College by a score of 13-10. After the Cyclones led the whole game the Knights tied the score late in the third quarter at nine, but Centenary was able to answer that Neumann run by scoring four of the next five goals. The Cyclones have now improved their record to 2-6 and 1-2 in the conference while Neumann fell to 1-9 and 0-2 in the conference. Needing a change from the past couple of games, head coach Matt Klank felt the Cyclones really went back to the basics. “We really got back to playing fundamental lacrosse and executing our strategy. We felt nobody could check Jason Rieg so we went to him, and he really came through with a big performance,” said Klank. Junior, Jason Rieg (Chester, NJ/West Morris) scored three goals in the first quarter to help Centenary build a two goal lead in that quarter at 5-3. The Cyclones outscored Neumann in the second quarter three goals to two to have a halftime lead of 8-5. Neumann College fought back in the third quarter to tie the score at nine after two goals by Dominic Collichio and a goal from Bryan Capone and Matt Toth. Closing out the game, however, Rieg scored two more times as well as sophomore Joe Swantoski (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and senior Travis Roy (Whippanny, NJ/Whippay Park) to give the Cyclones 13 goals. Defensively Centenary carried out their game plan well. “On the defensive side we just tried to pack it in as much as possible and force Neumann to take outside shots, which we felt our goalie could handle,” said Klank. Brian Troilo (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) was the goalie for Centenary today and he finished with 19 saves. Rieg finished the day with five goals and Swantoski finished with four goals. For the Knights Collichio finished with four goals.
Cylones Topped By Marywood in CSAC Action
SCRANTON, PA (April 1, 2009) The men’s lacrosse team were facing their second CSAC opponent of the season playing the Marywood Pacers on Wednesday afternoon and were delivered their second conference loss as Marywood topped the Cyclones 13-5. Marywood brought their record back up to .500 with win at an even 4-4 and now remain undefeated in the CSAC at 2-0. The Cyclones’ record has now been lowered to 1-6 and 0-2 in conference play. In the first quarter the Pacers jumped out to a three goal lead after Stephen Klepfer, Dustin Sturdevant, and Ryan Kearney found the back of the net. Centenary got on the board when with a minute left in the quarter junior Eddie Montalvo (West Islip, NY/West Islip) scored his first goal of the season and pulled the Cyclones within two at 3-1. After giving up an early goal in the second quarter the Cyclones countered with a goal from leading scorer Jason Rieg (Chester, NJ/West Morris) to make the score Marywood four, Centenary two. The Pacers were able to find the net twice more, however, in the quarter and took a halftime lead of 6-2. In the third quarter both teams traded goals. First Marywood’s Ryne Boyle scored but then it was Rieg again with the answer for his second of the game. Centenary allowed another goal by Boyle only to get it right back when Matt Biringer (Brick, NJ/Brick) scored his fifth goal of the season making the score 8-4. The Cyclones kept it within four to close out the fourth quarter when after giving up one more goal to Boyle, sophomore Joe Swantoski (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) was able to beat the keeper and score his first goal of the game. In the fourth quarter the Marywood attack was too much as they scored four unanswered goals to make the score final at 13-5. The Cyclones on this day were led by Rieg who scored two goals. Brian Troilo (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) in net for Centenary finished the day with 22 saves. The Pacers were led by Ryne Boyle who finished the game with four goals. In the second half Kean put up more goals in the third quarter and then five goals in the final quarter to finish the day with 16. Cyclones Looking to Bounce Back at Home vs. KeanHACKETTSTOWN, NJ (March 23, 2009) The men’s lacrosse team is hoping to get back on the winning side of things when they take on the Kean Cougars on Tuesday afternoon on Cyclone Field. The Cyclones (1-3) are looking to record their first win since March 9 when they beat Penn State-Abington 11-8. The Cougars (4-3) will not be an easy task however. “Kean will certainly provide a stern test for us. They are very athletic on both ends of the ball and have a lot of experience,” said head coach Matt Klank. When talking about what his team needs to improve upon in order to turn things around Klank had this to say, “We need to excel in the fundamentals of the game in order to be successful. We need to handle the ball well, play with a passion, and be mentally engaged for 60 minutes.” The Cyclones were last in action on March 21 as they were defeated by Stockton College 19-6. Things started off well for Centenary as they struck first when 10 minutes into the first quarter Jason Rieg (Chester, NJ/West Morris) netted his fourth goal of the season giving CC the lead 1-0. Centenary could not hold off FDU however, as the Devils scored twice in the quarter's final three minutes to take a 2-1 lead. The game is set to start tonight at 7:00 pm. This is the Cyclones last game before they travel south to take on Roger Williams on March 17, in Orlando, FL. Rieg and Roy Net Hat Tricks in Opening Game Victory
Hackettstown, NJ (3/9/09) The Centenary men’s lacrosse team opened their season on a chilly Monday afternoon taking on the visiting Penn-State Abington Lions. The Cyclones got the 11-8 victory behind Jason Rieg (Chester, NJ/West Morris) and Travis Roy (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park), who both finished with a hat trick. This victory for the Cyclones got them off on the right foot as their record now becomes 1-0. Penn-State Abington is still looking for their first win as the loss drops them to 0-2 on the season. “Numbers were going to be a problem for us today. We lost a starting defenseman at practice during the week, and lost another starter early on in the game. We weren’t going to be able to do what we wanted to on defense,” said fifth-year head coach Matt Klank. The Lions were able to jump on Centenary’s thin defensive line in the first quarter as they took a 2-1 lead on goals by Jordan Dipentino and Peter Seweryn. The Cyclones rebounded in the second period, scoring seven of the quarters’ 10 goals to open up a three goal lead at 8-5 at half. Starting the second half, offense was the concern for Klank. “Although our offense was executing well, we didn’t shoot as good as we are able to. Our shooting as well as their goalie making many saves was definitely a concern for us,” he said. The Cyclones responded in the third quarter as Rieg scored a goal and assisted on another, this one to Joe Swantoski (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) as Centenary took a 10-5 lead into the fourth quarter. In the fourth PSU Abington would not go quietly as Bill Kelly got his team back into the game when he scored in the opening minute to make the score 10-6. The Cyclones’ Jeffrey Prudente (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) took back the momentum, momentarily, when he scored to put his team back up five at 11-6. The Lions scored two more goals in the quarter, however, were not able to get any closer than three as Centenary’s defense tightened up and held onto the three goal lead for the final score, 11-8. Looking forward, Coach Klank was happy with the effort, but wanted more. “The kids played hard considering we were short-handed, but we could have played smarter. That’s something we are going to look to do in the future.” Home Lacrosse Game Postponed; Make-Up Date To Be Determined
