Cyclones Fall in Semi-Finals 10-6

Nate Small

(4/30/08)   Earlier this afternoon the Centenary Men’s Lacrosse team lost in the PAC (Pennsylvania Athletic Conference) semi-finals to Eastern University by the final of 10-6.  The victory moves the Eagles into Saturday’s Championship game versus Cabrini College, who advanced to Sunday with a 19-1 victory over Marywood also earlier today.  The loss ends the Cyclones season with an overall record of 6-11.

The afternoon started with Centenary notching the first score, on an unassisted goal from Jason Reig (Long Valley West Morris).  The host Eagles responded two minutes later on a goal from Michael Ryan, tying the game at 1-1.  Eastern tallied another at the 9:10 mark when Ryan found Matt Colello for the 2-1 lead.  The visiting Cyclones took control of the opening quarter as they ran off three consecutive goals, getting scores from Ryan Mangold (Hillsborough/Hillsborough), Colin Aldino (Belmar/St. Rose), and Nate Small (Great Mills, MD/Great Mills)Reig, Small, and Aldino all registered assists in the span.  Centenary took the 4-2 advantage into the second period.  Eastern then used the second quarter for their own scoring spree, tallying the only four goals of the period.  Ben O’Donnell pulled the hosts to within one on an assist from Michael Ryan.  Ryan then did his own scoring recording the next three, with assists coming from Nick Mandia, Colello, and Matt Mandia.  Eastern held the Cyclones scoreless in the period and held a 6-4 lead at the halftime break.

Centenary opened the second half much like the first, playing a controlled offense and fought back with two goals in the opening nine minutes of play.  Small took a pass from Mangold for their fifth tally, and seven minutes later Small connected on his third of the game to tie the game at 6-6.  The Eagles wasted no time taking the lead back as Jimmy Caiola scored an unassisted goal 0:43 later to push Eastern back in front 76-, which they held into the fourth quarter.  The Eagles O’Donnell and Nick Mandia extended the lead to the eventual final decision of 10-6 with goals at the 11:01, 9:24, and 3:22 marks of the period.

Centenary’s Small led the visitor’s with three goals, while Aldino, Mangold, and Reig each added one.  Brian Triolo (Whitehouse Station/Hunterdon Central) made nine saves in the loss.  Boxscore

Cyclones Earn Third Seed PAC Playoff Berth

(4/26/08) – This afternoon the Centenary men’s lacrosse team defeated Alvernia College today in a match on Cyclone Field.

Meanwhile, in Scranton, PA the two teams that could make or break Centenary’s playoffs hopes squared off as well.  In a dramatic 8-7 victory, Marywood University downed Shenendoah University.  Centenary’s win and the win for Marywood created a three way tie between the Cyclones, Shenendoah and Marywood.

In this instance because each team won one game and lost one game to the teams that were tied, the second tie breaker, goals against, is used to decide the qualifying teams.  Both Marywood and Centenary had 69 goals against for the season while Shenendoah had 75.  This awards playoff spots to the former two teams.

Since Centenary defeated Marywood head to head, the Cyclones earned the third seed and will be heading to Eastern University on Wednesday for the first round of PAC Conference playoffs.

(4/2/08)  Earlier this afternoon the Centenary Men’s Lacrosse team dropped a hard fought non-conference contest with the University of Scranton by the final of 13-9.  Despite the margin of victory, the game was tied with just over six minutes remaining and certainly could have gone either way.

The visiting Royals (7-2) jumped in front early scoring twice in the opening seven minutes of play.  Centenary (1-7) would strike once in the first quarter on an unassisted goal by Jason Reig (Long Valley/West Morris), to pull within one after one period of play.  The two team’s traded two goals each, again through the first seven minutes, keeping the margin at one 4-3.  From there Scranton took control scoring three more times to close the quarter and head into halftime with a commanding 7-3 advantage.

The second half began much like the first as the Royals struck first, pushing the cushion to 8-3.  However, over the next 17 minutes (final eight of the third quarter and the opening nine of the fourth) the host Cyclones dominated the score board running off six goals to Scranton’s one.  The final tally came on Rory Murray’s (Cranford/Seton Hall Prep) fourth goal of the game, and it pulled the Cyclones even at 9-9.  With just over six minutes left in the game, Centenary found themselves in the middle of a down to the wire finish.  Unfortunately for the Cyclones, the Royals picked up the following face-off and Christian Dugan found the back of the net less than a minute later to put the visitor’s back in front.  Over the final five minutes of play, Scranton would notch three more goals to push the score to the final margin of 13-9 and notch their seventh victory of the year.

Scranton’s Kyle Frank led the scoring for Royals, tallying five goals and an assist, while Thomas Kornobis netted four goals and Duggan added two goals and an assist.  Jeremy Dowiak made six saves in net for the visitor’s.  As for Centenary Rory Murray led the way with four goals, while teammate Nate Small (Great Mills, MD/Great Mills) added two of his own.  Colin Aldino (Belmar/St. Rose) and Jason Reig each chipped in with one goal and one assist.   Boxscore

Season Preview

The Cyclones have two pure attackmen that will play only attack this season, Colin Aldino and Jason RiegRieg, Hofstra transfer, plays on the left hand side and is a very technical attackmen with solid skills.  He will certainly draw the best defender each game, is a solid off ball player and a great finisher.  Aldino is the fastest player on the team and will be the player with ball in his stick a lot behind the goal.  He is a great change of direction and dodger.  Ryan Mangold (tri-captain) and Nate Small (tri-captain) will both spilt time on the midfield and attack. Mangold, a four-year starter, will split time from up top and on the attack.  He possesses a good shot and works well without the ball.  A better dodger from up than behind the goal will be asked to generate from the top. Nate Small, a two-year starter and the Cyclones leading scorer the past two seasons, will spilt time on attack and midfield.  Is the best dodger on the team, but is better from behind the goal than anywhere else.  Possess a great shot from top and will draw the best long pole while on midfield.

In the midfield, Rory Murray (tri-captain) will lead Centenary.  Murray is a throw back type midfielder that can contribute on the offensive end and defensive end. He is a strong midfielder that will dodge and draw from in front of the goal.  Travis Roy, another throwback midfielder and top face off man returns and will be asked to a little of everything this season.  Joe Swantkoski and Kurt Shann, both freshman, will be looking to add depth to the midfield.  Matt Biringer and Elliot Gray, both short stick defensive midfielders, play the most difficult position in the game of lacrosse.  Biringer has steadily improved over his years with the Cyclones and has a solid understanding of defensive principals.  Gray, a transfer, is one of the team's best athletes and will be counted to do a lot, including at times even play on the offensive end.  Eddie Montalvo, team's best defender, will move back and forth from down low and up top as the long stick defensive midfielder.  He could go down as the programs best defender, with a great understanding of the game and is a solid on and off ball defender.  Dustin Overs will also look to add depth to defensive midfield group.

The defense is a young group, led by Geoff Ford who will look to anchor the bunch.  Ford is a 6-8 defender who has tons of potential and is a fierce defender.  Richard Brady, has switched back from a short stick defensive midfield and comes back to close out the defensive starters.  He is a solid on and off ball defender.  Newcomer Gerald Cavataio, will start as a true freshman, who is also a solid off ball defender with a lot of potential.

In goal, junior Brian Troilo, the Cyclones returning starter looks to build off last year.  Troilo is a good communicator and has the capability to make the great save, but needs to become a more consistent goalie.

Overall Coach Klank and the Centenary Men are looking to bounce back after a disappointing 3-12 season a year ago.  Moving into the PAC (Pennsylvania Athletic Conference) has the team excited about a possible playoff birth.  The team's lack of depth on the defensive end, will make their strong offensive unit look to possess ball and shorten games.  However at the same time they will have to finish opportunities when they present themselves.
