Kuchar Recoginzed by Metropolitan Writer's and DIII News

Alex Kuchar

(4/30/07) Earlier this month the Metropolitan Basketball Writer’s Association released their 2006-2007 All-Met Division III Men’s Basketball Selections.  Centenary College sophomore Alex Kuchar (Rutherford/Rutherford) was chosen to the Association’s Third Team of All-Stars.  More recently Kuchar was also recognized by the DIII News Publication, where they named him to the Honorable Mention Team of Division III Men's Basketball.

These pair of awards come after a season that saw Kuchar lead the team in scoring, at 24.5 ppg, which also ranked him second in the Skyline Conference and fifth in all of Division III.  Alex was also named to the Skyline Conference Honorable Mention Team as well as being nominated to the NABC Division III All District Team.

Kuchar currently stands at 947 career points, in his first two seasons at Centenary.  He is certainly on pace to become the third Centenary Men’s Basketball player to reach the 1,000 point milestone for their career.

Kuchar Selected for All-Conference Team.

(02/27/07) - Alex Kuchar's (Rutherford / Rutherford) season for the Cyclone Men was not outdone by very many players this winter.  The standout guard ended the season averaging 24.5 points per game, which was good enough for second in the Skyline Conference and fourth in the NCAA, in route to being named to the Skyline’s Honorable Mention Team.  Kuchar also was chosen as the Conference’s Player of the Week once, and has been nominated to the Metropolitan Sports Writer’s Association All- Met Team.  He ended the year 48th in Division III for three-point field goals per game (2.9), making a total of 70 on the season.

Cyclones Beaten in Finale by Old Westbury

(2/17/07)  The Centenary men’s basketball team lead Old Westbury by as many as eight points in the first half but the Panthers came back to win Saturday in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center 105-71.

The Cyclones jumped out in front early, leading by four points in the first three minutes when senior Kyle Warner (Severn, MD /Annapolis) knocked down a jumper.  The two teams went back and forth over the next 12-plus minutes, until the Panthers took their first lead with two minutes remaining in the half.  The Cyclones shot a terrific 59% from the floor and 64% from the three point line despite trailing by three points at the end of the period.

In the second period the Cyclones never regained their rhythm getting outscored 26 to 10 in the first ten minutes of play.  The visiting Panthers used nine steals in the half to take control of the tempo, forcing the Cyclones into a transition game, which they were not able to keep close.  Old Westbury led by as many as 36 (99-63) with just over four minutes to play, ultimately notching the 105-71 win.

Junior Alex Kuchar (Rutherford/Rutherford) and senior Kyle Warner led the team in scoring, netting 15 points a piece.  On the day when the seniors were honored, senior Steve McNamara (Oak Ridge/Jefferson Township) added a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds in his final home game.  For Old Westbury, Kenny Eusey (Brooklyn, NY/Rice) tallied a game high 28 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.   BOXSCORE

Yeshiva Knocks Off Cyclones 87-66

(2/7/07) Earlier tonight Yeshiva University defeated Centenary College in Skyline Men’s Basketball action by the final of 87-66, improving the Macabees to 14-8 on the season.  The loss drops Centenary to 3-18, 1-11 in the Skyline Conference standings.

For most of the game, Yeshiva’s Ian Ribald (Dallas, TX/Yavneh Academy) had the hot hand converting on 12-of-16 shots, including eight three-pointers.  Ribald led all scorers with a game high 34 points.  When the Cyclones were able to contain Ribald, their shooting touch was off, as the Cyclones connected on just 23-of-62 shots from the floor, and just 9-of-14 from the foul line.  After falling behind 39-29 in the opening half, the Cyclones opened the second half with a cold spell and found themselves down 51-31 with just five minutes gone.  The hosts never seem to recover, as the twenty point margin would be as close as they would get over the final stretch of the contest.

For the Cyclones in the loss Alex Kuchar (Rutherford/Rutherford) scored a team high 26 points, while Kyle Warner (Severn, MD/Annapolis) added 13 and Steve McNamara (Oak Ridge/Jefferson Twp.) chipped in with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  For Yeshiva, Ribald led with his 36 and teammates Richard Lewis (Memphis, TN/Cooper) and Harel Vatavu (Ramat Gan, Israel) netted 20 and 14 points respectively.  BOXSCORE

Warner Reaches 1,000 despite Overtime Loss

Kyle Warner

(1/20/07) The Centenary men in search of their fourth victory on the season came away with a heart breaking loss among personal celebration.  In the games opening minute Centenary senior Kyle Warner (Severn, MD/Annapolis) converted a free-throw to tally his 1,000th career point.  Warner, a transfer from Anne Arundel CC in Maryland would finish the game with 13 points and five boards.  The host Cyclones held a comfortable cushion for most of the opening half with their largest lead coming with just over three minutes remaining in the half at 33-26.  The visiting Privateers of Maritime College were able to close the gap to 33-30 by the halftime break.  In the second half the Cyclones would have numerous chances to put the game away but Maritime would not allow it.  Centenary relinquished the lead just one time in the final twenty minutes, leading by as many as seven points late in the period and by three (70-67) with 0:16 left on the clock.  In what was to be their final possession, Maritime’s Joseph Bracaglia (Jamaica, NY/Martin Van Buren) was fouled on a three-point jumper.  Bracaglia calmly stepped to the free-throw line and sank all three attempts, sending the contest into overtime.  In the extra five minutes Centenary was unable to get anything going on the offensive end and was outscored 15-2, ultimately falling by the final of 85-72.  Maritime’s Lamar Fields (Bronx, NY/Rice) led the visitors with 30 points and 10 rebounds, while Bracaglia tallied 15 points, and Michael Stolberg (Bayside, NY/Holy Cross) added 14 and 11 rebounds.  As for Centenary their top scorer Alex Kuchar (Rutherford/Rutherford) paced the Cyclones with 30 points of his own, while Warner added 13, and Tim Skroski (Stratford/Sterling) chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds.  BOXSCORE

Centenary Men Notch First Conference Win

(12/7/06 @ CMSV) In the nightcap the Centenary Cyclones tallied their first Skyline Conference victory of the season, and first since January of 2004.  The visiting Cyclones got to off to a relative slow start, falling behind by as many as seven points halfway through the opening 20 half.  Following a three-pointer by Kyle Warner (Severn, MD/Annapolis) at the 10:27 mark which pulled Centenary to within four points (15-11), the Cyclones began to gain control of the game and over the next eight minutes outscored the host Dolphins 19-12 to take the lead by the three (30-27) with just over two minutes to go in the half.  The second half provided continuous back and forth action, which included ten lead changes.  It ultimately became a half, in which whoever was going to have the ball last was going to win the game.  The largest lead by either team, came when the Cyclones held a nine point lead at 66-57 with seven minutes to go.  Mount Saint Vincent fought back to take the lead 72-70 following a pair of free throws by Charlie Britz with just over two minutes left.  Centenary responded with a basket by Steve McNamara (Oak Ridge / Jefferson Twp.) and two free throws by Alex Kuchar (Rutherford / Rutherford) to regain the lead.  Despite the comeback effort, the Dolphins fell short as Marquis King’s three-pointer at the buzzer rimmed off and the Cyclones captured the win 76-74.  Kuchar, the Skyline’s leading scorer, lead all players with 23 points including 7-for-9 from the line.  Warner, Kyle Boone (Hopatcong/Hopatcong), and Tim Skroski (Stratford / Sterling) all added double figures netting 14, 13, and 12 points respectively.
