2010 Season Preview

After placing eighth in the 2008 conference tournament and sixth in last season’s Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament, the Centenary golf team is looking to improve once again in 2010. Head coach Josh Huber has put together a team with returning veterans and impressive freshmen and looks to post an impressive season.

The 2010 Centenary Golf team features the largest roster the team has ever carried. The spring team combines five returnees from a year ago, with six newcomers. Junior team captain Sean Kelley and senior Hiro Watayo have been with the team their entire Centenary careers and they look to guide this year’s squad along with senior Damien Gallegos and sophomores John Manos and Justin Belanger.

“Carrying eleven players on the roster will certainly bring a highly competitive atmosphere to practice, as the entire group competes for a spot to see action in the spring events,” said Huber.

In the Fall segment of the year, Manos, Kelly and Watayo were second, third and fourth on the Cyclones, respectively, with averages of 86.3, 89.3 and 92.0. Leading the way for Centenary was freshman Brian Criscuolo, who played to a stroke average of 80.0 in three events, including a 75 at the team’s home course, High Bridge Hills Golf Club, against FDU-Florham on Oct. 2.

Manos looks to improve on his solid freshman showing, where he led the team with a scoring average of 87.8. He twice posted rounds of 82, on the second day of action in the Farmingdale State Tournament on April 17 and at home against Immaculata on April 21. Kelley finished right behind him with an average of 88.6. He carded a career-best 80 at home on April 10 against Steven’s, Farmingdale State and St. Joseph’s-Patchogue. He was named to the CSAC Honor Roll on April 13.

Junior Colin Aldino leads the group of newcomers, along with sophomore Steve Capone and freshmen Criscuolo, Billy McNeir, Ryan Peters and Dan Gunning

Centenary opens its schedule on March 26 at Stevens. The CSAC Tournament will take place on April 24-25 at the Inniscrone Country Club in Avondale, Pa.

“We will be competing in tournaments at Moravian College and Farmingdale State University, along with head-to-head matches with such opponents as Stevens, DeSales and FDU-Florham,” said Huber. “Our schedule will help us get ready for one of our goals, which is to win the conference tournament.”
