Richard Brady named March 2009 Student of the Month
Richard J. Brady, otherwise know as “Dick,†is the recipient of the Equine Student of the Month for March 2009. Mr. Brady is extremely deserving of this distinction and is the first non-Equine Major to receive this honor. Richard has played an instrumental role at the Equestrian Center for the past year and is always available to help. The scope of his expertise extends from assisting with the horses, to fixing the farm equipment, to mending fencing. Richard is a true “jack of all trades.†While Mr. Brady had ridden the occasional horse as a young child, his first organized English riding lesson occurred in the Spring ’08 at Centenary College. From there, Richard’s passion for riding and the equine industry blossomed. Not only would Richard “hang out†around the barn to learn more about the care and management of horses, he worked all summer at the Equestrian Center soaking up the experiences of a lifetime. Since then, Richard has remained employed as a work-study student and can frequently be found volunteering for activities, events, and shows at the Equestrian Center. If there is an event at the facility, Richard is sure to be there. Mr. Brady is an active member of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). He competed in his first intercollegiate show at Briarwood on October 26, 2008 where he place 4th in the walk/trot division. Since that time, Richard has successfully competed approximately 9 more times. Mr. Brady is from Morristown, NJ and is scheduled to graduate in May 2009 with a Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice and a History Minor. He is a member of the Centenary College Men’s Lacrosse team as well as IHSA. Upon graduation, Richard intends to pursue a career in law enforcement, specifically in the mounted patrol division. Ideally, Richard would like to join the Morris County Parks Department’s Mounted Patrol. The Equine Studies Department wishes Richard all the success in combining his two true career passions of horses and law enforcement. Sarah Ciamillo named February 2009 Student of the Month
The Equine Studies Department of Centenary College is honored to present the Equine Student of the Month Award to Sarah Ciamillo for February 2009. Miss Ciamillo can always be found in the barn of the Equestrian Center contributing to the program. Whether it is work-study, Hunter/Jumper Team, Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA), or randomly assisting someone around the barn, Sarah proactively provides a helping hand with a smile on her face. Even when limited to walking on crutches for several months, due to a knee injury, Miss Ciamillo refused to leave the barn and could be frequently found helping the barn management or the veterinarian with responsibilities around the facility. Her dedication and commitment to Centenary College’s Equestrian Center and its curriculum is unparalleled. Miss Ciamillo is extremely patient and understanding of the personalities of Centenary’s horses and is always willing to accept a challenge. Sarah has befriended Wyatt, a rather stubborn and opinionated horse that requires a great deal of additional time, patience, and persistence. While other students would invest their time with a more receptive horse, Miss Ciamillo routinely works and interacts with Wyatt in a positive manner and without hesitation. Sarah’s dedication and loyalty in the face of adversity represents the definition in horsemanship at Centenary College. Miss Ciamillo hails from Boonton Township, NJ and had been riding horses for over eleven years. She is a member of the Hunter/Jumper Team and IHSA. She is scheduled to graduate in May of 2011 with a Bachelors of Science in Equine Studies, concentrating in Equine Science. After graduation, Sarah hopes to attend veterinary school and become an Equine Veterinarian. The Equine Studies Department is honored to bestow this honor upon Miss Ciamillo and knows that she will be successful in her future career. ANRC 2008 Photos

October 27, 2008 - The Equine Studies Department of Centenary College is extremely excited to announce Miss Nicole Missry as the Equine Student of the Month for October 2008. Miss Missry grew up in Atlantic Highlands, NJ and rode horses practically her entire life. She began riding at the young age of 10 close to home at Hidden Hollow Farm in NJ. She quickly set foot in the show ring in the beginner hunters and continued riding and competing in the hunters throughout middle and high school. She started her college career at Penn State University, but her time there was short lived. One thing was missing, and that was horses. They were such a big part of her life prior to college and she realized Penn State could not offer her what she truly wanted, training for a career which offered her a lifetime working with horses. Nicole transferred to Centenary in January, 2008. Over the past 8 months at Centenary, Nicole has demonstrated true horsemanship and unparalleled dedication at the Equine Center. She spent this past summer working tirelessly at the Equine Center and helping prepare the facility for the fall semester, and played a major role in assisting the farriers every Monday. This semester, she has continued working with the farriers, and helps with organizing the shoeing schedules for all the horses in the facility. She has taken on a strong interest in farrier work, and will stay at the barn until the work is complete. On several occasions, this was very late in the evening. Nicole does this without complaint, and always with a smile on her face. This is a huge responsibility that Nicole has willingly accepted and completed with diligence and success. Nicole is scheduled to graduate in May, 2010 with a degree in Equine Business Management. She has taken on a love for competing in the hunter ring, and her ultimate goal is to show in the regular working hunters one day. Her devotion and dedication to the horse and the industry will make her huge success. Centenary College is extremely proud of Miss Missry’s accomplishments and appreciates all of her loyalty to the program. Congratulations, Nicole! You deserve it! Emily Hawley Named Equine Student of the Month.
October 20, 2008 - It is with great pleasure that the Equine Studies Department announces that Miss Emily Hawley is the recipient of Centenary College’s Equine Student of the Month award for September 2008. Emily is deserving of this distinction for her continual involvement at the Centenary College’s Equestrian Center across disciplines as well as throughout the barn. At any point in time, Miss Hawley can be found volunteering or participating in every event possible at the Center. Not to mention, Emily worked tirelessly this past summer at the Equestrian Center maintaining the facility, caring for the horses, assisting the veterinarian, and painting jumps. Emily Hawley is from the White Mountains of Fryeburg, Maine where horses have been a large component of her life. Her first passion riding horses was concentrated in Hunter/Jumpers and Eventing, however she became increasingly intrigued with dressage. Emily quickly learned how helpful dressage was for both horse and rider and wanted to learn more about it. Eventing dressage wasn't enough for Emily and she soon realized that concentrating exclusively with dressage would increase her chances of success. Therefore, Emily focused her effort towards dressage and has never regretted that decision. Prior to attending Centenary College, Miss Hawley had no formal instruction in dressage and attended only a few clinics. Despite this, Emily has proven to be an extremely accomplished rider, particularly in dressage. Presently, Miss Hawley is the captain of the Intercollegiate Dressage Team (IDA) for a second year in a row. In the Spring of 2008, Emily participated in the IDA National Competition at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts where she placed 3rd in the overall individual. Miss Hawley aspires to becoming a Dressage Trainer/Instructor while owner her own facility and business. She currently owns “Ashley†a Thoroughbred mare who she is training as a sales prospect. Emily is a hard worker and dedicated student at Centenary College, where she is a Resident Assistant and maintains a 4.0 GPA. The Equine Studies Department is extremely proud of Miss Hawley’s accomplishments and dedication and know that she will be extremely successful in her future career. |
