Two Centenary Cross Country Members Earn All-Academic Awards

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (April 3, 2009) – Two members of the Centenary cross country team, freshmen Chelsea Gummerson (Newton, N.J./Kittatinny) and Ashley Burger (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), each received All-Academic Honors from the National Collegiate Division III Women's Cross Country Coaches Association. Both student-athletes were named to the 2008 All-Academic Women's Cross Country Team. Burger holds a GPA of 3.850 while Gummerson has a GPA of 3.575.

Gummerson was named First Team All-Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) after a solid season, highlighted by a seventh-place finish in the CSAC Cross Country Championships. She ran the race in 21:06.4 to earn All-Conference and a berth to the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Championships, becoming the first Centenary women’s cross country runner to achieve this feat in eight years. In the NCAA Regionals, she placed 146th out of 218 with a time of 27:08.

Burger was Centenary’s recipient of the conference Sportsmanship Award for her leadership and dedication to the program. She also ran well in the CSAC Cross Country Championships, finishing 38th with a time of 24:44.1.

 

 

 

 

 

Gummerson Runs a 27:08 at Regionals

CANTON, N.Y. (November 16, 2008) - Centenary freshman Chelsea Gummerson (Newton, N.J./Kittatinny) ran in the NCAA Atlantic Cross Country Regional which took place on Saturday, Nov. 15. This race was held at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.

Out of a field of 218 runners, Gummerson placed 146th and finished with a time of 27:08. The winner was Wendy Pavlus of St. Lawrence University who ran a time of 22:31. For complete results, click here.

 

 

 

 

Chelsea Gummerson Competes at this Weekend's NCAA Regionals

CANTON, N.Y. (November 14, 2008) - Following her all-conference finish at the CSAC (Colonial States Athletic Conference) Cross Country Championship two weeks ago, Centenary freshman Chelsea Gummerson (Newton, N.J./Kittatinny) is heading to the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Championships.

Men and Women Cross Country Place Over Weekend Race

BRONX, N.Y. (November 10, 2008) -The Centenary women's cross country team took a first-place finish in this weekend's Nick Russo Halloween Classic, while the men's team finished third in the same race.

The women were highlighted by Chelsea Gummerson (Newton, N.J./Kittatinny) who continued her fine season, this time taking third overall with a time of 11:34. The Lady Cyclones next finisher was sophomore Mary Busichio (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Catholic) who finished with a time of 12:50.

On the men's side, it was Brian Dunphy (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) who paced the Cyclones, finishing seventh with a time of 21:24. Joe Singleton (Mahwah, N.J./Craig School) and Gary Kowaleski also ran a good races, coming in with times of 24:54 and 26:43, respectively.

Three Runners Recognized by Conference

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (October 7, 2008) - Thursday afternoon the complete listing of the Colonial States Athletic Conference cross country season awards was released.

Lady Cyclone freshman Chelsea Gummerson (Newton, N.J./Kittatinny) was named First Team All-Conference, while teammates Ashley Burger (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) and JJ Mitchell (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) were both named Centenary’s recipients of the CSAC Sportsmanship Award for their leadership and dedication to the program this fall.

Gummerson and Dunphy Lead Centenary Teams at CSAC's

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (November 1, 2008) - On Saturday afternoon at the CSAC (Colonial States Athletic Conference) cross country championships, Centenary freshman Chelsea Gummerson (Newton, N.J./Kittatinny) finished the 5K event in a time of 21:06. Gummerson’s time was good enough for seventh-place overall and an All-Conference finish, making her the first Centenary women’s cross country runner to achieve this in the last eight years.

Following Gummerson in the race were fellow teammates Ashley Berger (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) (38th), Mary Busichio (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Catholic) (42nd), Carol Pietraskiewicz (Port Murray, N.J./Warren Hills) (59th), Laurie Fitzpatrick (Burlington City, N.J./Burlington City) (62nd) and Lauren Lamotta (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) (65th). The Lady Cyclones team finished 9th in the team standings out of the nine team field.

In the men’s half of the race, Centenary’s Brian Dunphy (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) led the Cyclones with a time of 29:32 over the 8K distance. Dunphy placed 18th overall with teammates Joe Singleton (Mahwah, N.J./Craig Upper School) (52nd), Gary Kowaleski (65th), Brian Steward (Haddon Twp., N.J./Haddon Twp.) (66th) and Erik Hoagland (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) (71st) coming in behind. The Centenary men’s team finished seventh in the team standings.

The Centenary cross country season continues next weekend at the Nick Russo Invitational, hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology. The race gets started at 12:30pm on Sunday Nov. 9.

Cross Country Teams Finish Ninth and 10th Respectively Over Weekend

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (October 27, 2008) Both the women and men's cross country teams competed this weekend at the St. Joseph's-Patchogue Invitational. The Lady Cyclones finished in ninth-place while the Cyclone men took 10th.

Individually for the women, Chelsea Gummerson (Newton, N.J./Kittatinny) led the way, running a 22:13. Following close behind was teammate Ashley Burger (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) who ran a 26:39.

On the men's side, it was Brian Dunphy (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) who once again had the top time, crossing the line at 30:29. The next two to finish for the Centenary were Joe Singleton (Mahwah, N.J./Craig School) in 35:37, and JJ Mitchell (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) who finished with a time of 37:16.

Cross Country Takes a 7th and 8th Place Finish at Gwynedd-Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. (October 13, 2008) - Both the women and men cross country teams ran in the Gwynedd-Mercy Invitational over the weekend. The Lady Cyclones finished eighth overall out of eight teams, while the men took a seventh-place finish out of nine teams.

For the women individually, Chelsea Gummerson (Newton, N.J./Kittatinny) took a 10th-place finish overall, coming in with a time of 21:04. The next to finish for the women was Mary Busichio (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Catholic) who recorded a time of 25:02.

On the men's side, Brian Dunphy (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) ran a 31:40 which was good for a 23rd-place finish. Joe Singleton (Mahwah, N.J./Craig School) ran a 37:27 which had had him finish at 59th overall.

Both teams will again be in competition on Oct. 25 at the St. Joseph's Invitational.

Chelsea Gummerson Named to CSAC Honor Roll

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (September 29, 2008) - Freshman Chelsea Gummerson (Newton, N.J./Kittatinny) was named to the CSAC Women's Cross Country Honor Roll for the week ending in 9/28. Chelsea finished first out of 19 runners t the Drew Invitational in Madison, N.J. this past Staurday. Her time of 20:50 was the fastest she has recorded through the team's first four meets this fall.

 

 

 

 

 

 

First and Second Place Finishes In Cross Country Weekend

(9/28/08) Following another afternoon of competing for the men and women's cross country team, the Cyclone Men finished 2nd out of three teams for the Drew Invitational.  Unfortunately for the Cyclone women they were unable to record a team score, however had an individual performance worthy of a CSAC Player of the Week Award.

First for the men, Brian Dunphy (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) continued to lead the team, this time running a 18:06 which was good for 2nd place, just seven seconds off the winner. Following him closely was Joe Singleton (Mahwah, NJ/Craig School) who ran a 20:19.

For the Lady Cyclones, Chelsea Gummerson (Newton, NJ/Kittatinny) placed first overall running a 20:50. With this performance she won the CSAC Player of the Week. Also placing was Ashley Burger (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) who ran a 26:39.

Both teams will again be in competition on October 11th, for the Gwynedd-Mercy College Invitational.

Dunphy and Gummerson Run Well For Cyclones

(9/22/08) Both the Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams participated in the Misericordia Cougar Classic this weekend. While both teams finished with an NTS, there was some strong individual performances.

The men were once again led by Brian Dunphy (Clifton, NJ/Clifton). Dunphy ran a 28:46 which was good enough for 34th place overall.

The Lady Cyclones were paced by freshman, Chelsea Gummerson (Newton, NJ/Kittatinny) who ran a 21:13 which placed her at 30th overall.

Cross Country Men Place 12th at Cedar Crest

(9/13/08) The Cyclone Men runner's placed 12th out of 13 teams in the Cedar Crest Invitational.

Once again pacing Centenary was Brian Dunphy (Clifton/Clifton) who ran a 32:42 which was good for 40th overall. Not too far behind him, was teammate Joe Singleton (Mahwah/Craig Upper School) who ran a 36:51.

The Lady Cyclones had some individual runners compete in this invitational. Leading the way was sophomore Mary Busichio (Roselle Park/Roselle Catholic) who ran a 25:57. Also running well was Ashley Burger (Phillipsburg/Phillipsburg), she finished with a time of 26:12.

Cyclone Women and Men Place 13th and 16th Respectively at Delaware Valley Invitational

(9/1/08) - The men and women cross country team's were both in competition last weekend at the Delaware Valley Invitational.

For the women who placed 13th out of 20 teams, Chelsea Gummerson lead the way, running a 26:27, good enough for 21st overall. Also running strong races were Mary Busichio (31:41) and Jen Vasta (32:44). The Lady Cyclones will again be in competition this weekend at Keystone College.

The men who placed 16th out of 18 teams running were paced by Brian Dunphy who ran a 30:50 in this race. Also putting up good showings were Patrick Bowen (34:08) and Joe Singleton with a 34:45. The men too will be competing at Keystone College over the weekend.

CSAC Coaches Select Cavalier Men and Pacer Women as Cross Country Favorites

(8/25/08) Aston, Pa. – Cabrini College’s Men’s Cross Country team has been selected as the pre-season favorite in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) coaches’ poll. The 2007 conference champion received five of nine possible first-place votes for a total of 77 points, finishing ahead of Gwynedd-Mercy College.

“I’m surprised that we’d be given this honor because we’ve lost two of our top five runners,” said Cavalier Head Coach Tom O’Hora. “I hope this will give our younger team members the impetus to perform well. We are certainly flattered to be named the pre-season favorite and we look forward to living up to those expectations.”

Gwynedd-Mercy College earned a total of 71 points for a strong second. Keystone College was selected third with 60 points.

Marywood University (50), Baptist Bible College (38), Philadelphia Biblical University (32), Neumann College (30), Immaculata University (24) and Centenary College (23) rounded out the voting.

On the Women's side, Marywood University’s Women’s Cross Country team has been selected as the pre-season favorite in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) coaches’ poll. The 2007 conference champion received five of ten possible first-place votes for a total of 86 points, finishing ahead of Gwynedd-Mercy College by virtue of a tiebreaker.

"We are honored to be selected as pre-season favorites in the CSAC, but know that our job in earning the championship becomes more difficult each year" said first-year Pacers Head Coach Kevin Borrelli. "There is tough competition throughout the conference and we are looking forward to the challenges we face from returning teams as well as the new schools."

The Pacers have won the last five conference championships, and were the runner up in 2002.

Gwynedd-Mercy College also earned a total of 86 points but received fewer first place votes to finish second. Cabrini College was selected third with 72 points.

Cedar Crest College (60), Keystone College (59), and Baptist Bible College (49) rounded out the top 6. Centenary College and Philadelphia Biblical University tied for seventh with 39 points. Immaculata University (37) and Neumann College (23) rounded out the voting.

Both of the 2008 CSAC Championship Races will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2008 in Allentown, Pa.

2008 Cross Country Season Outlook

The men’s and women’s cross-country team is looking to improve from last year.  The women’s team has three returning runners and three newcomers.  The Cyclones are expecting great things from freshman Chelsea Gummerson (Kittatinny High School), who ran a 19.27 in the 3-Mile at the SCIL Festival in 2007.  The men’s team will start from scratch with four new runners this season.  Centenary is looking to sophomore Brian Dunphy (Clifton High School), to lead the way for the men’s team.  First-year coach J.J. Cusick is excited about the runners this year.  “I think we have a good group of men and women runners this year with a lot of potential,” said Cusick.  The Cyclones kick off their season at the Delaware Valley Invitational in Doylestown, PA on August 30th.
