Centenary Cross Country 2009 Season Preview

In his second year as head coach, JJ Cusick looks to guide the Cyclones to a successful 2009 campaign.

Centenary cross country second-year head coach J.J. Cusick hopes to build on the success the Cyclones achieved in 2008. The men’s team finished eighth and the women ninth in the CSAC Championships, but that included sophomore Chelsea Gummerson finishing seventh in the race to earn First Team All-Conference honors and junior Brian Dunphy placing 18th out of 71 runners.

Gummerson then ran in the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Championships, placing 146th out of 218 runners. Dunphy also finished well at the St. Joseph’s College Invitational, taking home ninth-place out of 82 runners. Despite a solid core of runners with competition experience, the team is very young.

“We have a team that is mostly sophomores and freshman,” said Cusick. “On the men’s team, we have four returning runners, and on the women’s team, we have three student-athletes returning. But the experience we received last year will help us this season.”

The men’s team will be led by Dunphy, who ran a season’s best of 28:46 at the Misericordia University Invitational. Sophomores Gary Kowaleski, JJ Mitchell and Erik Hoagland will be looking to improve upon their respective personal records of 39:44, 37:16 and 46:56.

The women’s squad will be led by Gummerson, who had a personal record of 20:50 at the 2008 Drew Invitational, Ashley Burger, who ran a personal-best 24:44 at the conference championships, as well as senior Christina Gott.

Centenary welcomes seven new additions to the team.

“I am excited to see what the newcomers can do,” said Cusick. “On the men’s side, Kevin Franzoni, Andrew Schilling and Chad Lepes are all very experienced runners and will help us greatly this year. We have added Casey Bauer, Priscilla Gomez, Ji-Sun Han and Elizabeth Guella to the women’s squad, and I will be looking for these new runners to give the team a boost this season.”

Lepes was selected as the MVP of his High Point High School team in 2004 and has a personal record of 17:10 in the 5k. Schilling, a two-time First Team All-League runner at Bogota High School, has a personal record of 17.42 in the 5k, while Franzoni of Manalapan High School holds a personal 5k record of 21:56.

On the women’s side, Bauer holds a personal record of 22:30 in the 5k, while Gomez ran the 1600m in a personal-best 7:49. Guella competed in several local races this past year; her best finish in the 5k was 25:00.

“I will be looking for Dunphy, Burger and Gummerson to lead their respective teams this season and set a good example for the younger runners,” said Cusick. “Both squads have high expectations this year and the veterans’ job is to lead the teams to success.”
