(5/21/07)  Over the last week, four Centenary Baseball players were still receiving post season awards from both the NJCBA (New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association) and the ABCA/Division III New York Region Committee’s.  Senior Pat Cassidy (Annandale/North Hunterdon), junior Chris Mattson (Thorofare/West Deptford), and freshmen Michael Fasano (Hawthorne/St. Joseph’s) and Mark Cerrachio (Brick/Brick Memorial) were all honored by either one or both of the above mentioned associations for their 2007 performances on the diamond.

Cassidy was named to the NCAA Division III ABCA/Rawlings New York Region Third Team of All-stars.  He finished the season with a .360 average, finished second in hits with 40, and drove in 21 runs in route to being the lone Cyclone named to the Skyline Conference’s First Team.  Mattson, Centenary’s top pitcher this past spring, was also named to the New York Region’s Third Team.  Chris ended his junior year with a 2.50 ERA, while allowing just 45 hits in 57 2/3 innings of work.  He walked just 19 batters, struck out 40, and was a Skyline Conference Second Team member.  The following pair of freshmen were solid performers all season for Head Coach Dave Sawicki.  Michael Fasano ended the year with a .367 average, led the team in slugging % at .622, and was tied for the team lead in homeruns with three.  Fasano was the only Cyclone named to both the NJCBA All-Rookie Team and the New York Region’s Third Team for his accomplishments this spring.  He was also a Second Team Skyline Conference selection.  Mark Cerrachio, the second Centenary member of the NJCBA All-Rookie Team ended 2007 with a .345 batting average, led the Cyclones in total hits with 41, and knocked in 21 runs.  Cerrachio joined Mattson and Fasano on the Skyline Conferences’ Second Team of All-Stars.

(5/11/07) The Skyline Athletic Conference released all of its Conference All-Star teams last week, and the Cyclones of Centenary were well represented.  Each of Centenary’s four spring sports had at least one player named to either the first, second, or honorable mention teams in every sport.

The Centenary Baseball received the most notoriety as they placed five players on the first and second teams.  Senior Pat Cassidy (Annadale/North Hunterdon) was the lone player chosen to the First Team of All-Stars.  Cassidy ended the year hitting .360, including 11 extra base hits, and driving in 21.  This is his second year on the All-Conference team, as he received Second Team honors a year ago.

Junior Chris Mattson (Thorofare/West Deptford), and sophomore Andrew Koncen (Elizabeth/Union Catholic) joined freshmen Michael Fasano (Hawthorne/St. Joseph’s) and Mark Cerrachio (Brick/Brick Memorial) on the Skyline’s Second Team.  The duo took over as the Cyclone stop two starters about halfway through the season and combined for neary 10 victories.  Mattson finished with a 4-2 record and team best 2.50 ERA, while Koncen went 5-4 and held a 5.65 ERA.  Fasano and Cerrachio did their part at the plate this spring for the Cyclones.  Fasano finished second on the team in hitting with a .367 aveage on the year with 16 extra base hits, including 10 doubles and three homeruns.   Cerrachio came on strong late in the year ending the season with a .345 average, a team best 41 hits, and a second best nine doubles.

Cyclones End Season with 2-1 Loss

(4/5/07)  Farmingdale State staved off elimination in the Skyline Conference tournament posting a 2-1 victory over Centenary College.  The win sets up a match-up with Stevens who dropped a 3-1 decision to Manhattanville College earlier this afternoon in the winner’s bracket of the tournament.  The winner of tonight’s contest will square off with the Valiants in tomorrow’s championship round.  Manhattanville will need to win once to claim the conference championship while the Stevens/Farmingdale winner would have to win a pair to receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Rams struck early posting their only two runs of the game in the first inning.  First baseman Keith King led off the bottom half of the inning with a single.  King stole second after leftfielder Rich Santoro struck out on a            3-2 pitch.  Following a walk to third baseman Tom Heeman, shortstop Brian Benvenuto singled up the middle to plate King.  After a fielder’s choice put runners on first and third, Heeman scored on a wild pitch, giving Farmingdale the only runs they would need.

The pitchers would be in control of this game the rest of the way as Centenary’s Chris Mattson (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) only allowed four more hits over the next seven innings, while left-hander James Raimondi was up to the task of matching Mattson.  Raimondi allowed just one run on four hits and walked two over eight innings of work to pick up the win.  Billy Garofalo would pitch a perfect ninth to notch the save for the Rams.

Centenary’s only real threat came in the fifth inning when they notched their only run of the game.  Freshmen Mike Fasano (Hawthorne, NJ/St Joseph’s) and Mark Cerrachio (Brick, NJ/Brick) led the inning off with a walk and a single to right field respectively.  After a fly out to right field allowed Fasano to move up to third, senior Dave Vargo (Brick, NJ/Brick) came through with an RBI single to left field.  A pairm of consecutive groundouts ended the threat for the Cyclones.

Commenting on the season after the loss, Coach Dave Sawicki said “while we did not reach our teams goal of reaching the NCAA Tournament, we had a good season.  It is more incentive to work harder in the off-season and next year to make it back to the tournament.”

Centenary closes out their season with a 22-13 record, while ending their two year run as the Skyline's representative at the NCAA Tournament.  In their brief four year stint in the conference, the Cyclones have posted the highest winning percentage at a .644 clip and posted at least 22 wins in each of those seasons.  All of the athletic programs for the Cyclones will be joining the PAC (Pennsylvania Athletic Conference) for the 2007-2008 school year.

Cassidy, Centenary College’s first baseman claimed Skyline Conference Player of the Week honors for the second straight week after batting .556 (5-for-9) in a 3-0 week for the Cyclones (2-0 Skyline). Cassidy had a big game in a non-conference victory over Neumann, going 4-for-5   with a double, triple, three runs batted in and three runs scored. He also reached base four times (one hit, three walks) in seven plate appearances as Centenary swept a Skyline doubleheader from Farmingdale State.

Koncen tossed a nine-inning complete game - his first of the season. He surrendered just five hits and no earned runs while striking out nine and walking only one. Koncen has struck out 26 batters in 29 2/3 innings this season.

Centenary loses Tough 12-9 Game at #4 Cortland

Centenary Makes it Five Straight in Conference

(4/7/07)  Earlier this afternoon the Centenary baseball team extended its conference winning streak to five with a pair of victories over Farmingdale State.  The Cyclones notched wins by the scores of 7-2 and 5-3, improving their overall record to 13-5 while they move to 5-1 in the Skyline.

Centenary starter Andrew Koncen (Elizabeth/Union Catholic) dominated game one, allowing just five hits, walking one, and striking out nine.  The two Farmingdale runs were both unearned after each scored on fielding errors in the second and ninth innings.  The Cyclones trailed early before taking the 2-1 lead in the sixth inning on RBI hits by Michael Fasano (Hawthorne/St. Joseph’s) and Mark Cerrachio (Brick/Brick Memorial).  After pushing across a third run in the seventh, the hosts broke the game open in the eighth when they tacked on four more runs, highlighted by a lead-off triple by Fasano, an RBI single by Bill Geltzeiler (Rumson/Rumson-Fairhaven), and a two-RBI single by Gerry Papa (Hackettstown/Hackettstown)Koncen went the distance to record his third win of the season.

Game two was more of the same dominance on the mound, this time from both sides.  Starting pitchers Mike Rossi (Old Bridge/Old Bridge) of Centenary and Tom Heeman of Farmingdale held each side scoreless for the first five innings.  In the top half of the sixth, the visiting Rams strung together a pair of hits mixed in with a hit batter to chase Rossi from the game.  Immediately following the pitching change Farmingdale executed an attempted suicide squeeze bunt that went for a single to score the games first run.  Then following a pinch it RBI single by Rich Santoro, the Rams again ran the squeeze play for their third run of the inning.  Cyclone reliever Chris Mattson (Thorofare/West Deptford), who came in for Rossi, worked out of the bases loaded jam and kept the deficit at 3-0.  The loss of the lead seemed to awaken the Centenary bats as they tallied a five-spot in the home half of the inning, which included an RBI single by Papa, an RBI triple by Jared Grant (Mount Olive, NJ) which gave Centenary the lead, and a two-RBI double by Cerrachio which added the insurance.  Mattson was able to shut the door in the seventh after Farmingdale put the tying runs on base, and recorded his second victory of the season.

2007 Season Preview

With each passing year, the bar keeps on rising for the Centenary baseball program.  After advancing to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the second consecutive season, this year is no exception.  The Cyclones look to three-peat as Skyline Conference Champions as they compete there for the final time.

This season’s pitching staff will be led by All-New York Region pitchers Andrew Koncen and Chris Mattson.  Coming off the best pitching season in school history, Koncen will once again be the ace of the staff, while Mattson will be moved into the starting rotation along with Mike Rossi. Tied for the team lead in appearances last season, Erik Schmidt will play an important role out of the bullpen as well as Matt O’Leary.  Adding to the pitching staff will be Matt Beatty, Matt Devenny, Max Guglielmo, Dan Chapman, Gerry Papa and Matt Grasso.

With three transfers and a returning sophomore, the catching position will be up for grabs this season.  Kendrix Burriss is the only returnee and brings a big bat to the plate.  Adam Achilles quickness and strong arm will provide flexibility for him to play behind the dish and at third-base.  Jared Grant’s ability to handle the pitching staff will be very critical and offensive prowess will put him in the heart of the line-up.  Transfer Edwin Valverde’s collegiate experience will be a great asset to the team and will figure to provide a wealth of knowledge to his fellow catchers.

Seniors Patrick Cassidy and Dave Vargo will lead a talented and young infield.  Their strong leadership defensively and offensively, will be invaluable to the advancement of the other infielders.  Cassidy, coming off his Second-Team All-Skyline selection, finished with a .383 batting average a season ago, while Vargo batted a modest .303 Sophomore Jayson Loder will step into a full-time starting role this year between shortstop and second base.  Newcomers Mark Cerrachio, Andrew Materia, Mike Korn, Mark Demaio, and Sal Prestigiacomo will compete along with sophomore Bart Albrecht for playing time.

The outfield will be led by three seniors all who posses great range and versatility.  Billy Geltzeiler will serve as the leftfielder, Brian Ciamarra in centerfield and Gerry Papa will be in right field.  Transfer Andrew Matteria will also see time in the corner outfield spots along with first-base.  Steven Gonzalez will add some pop and one of the strongest arms to the line-up.  Freshman Mike Fasano, Andy Granozio and Matt Grasso will add depth and flexibility to team.

The Cyclones will test themselves early and often as they open the season against #20 Kean University.  Also on the schedule are nationally ranked SUNY-Cortland, Manchester College, Washington & Jefferson College, and College of Mt. St. Joseph.  They begin their quest for a third consecutive conference championship on March 24th versus College of Mount St. Vincent.
