Centenary’s Kimball Chosen by Nationals in 12th Round.

(06/7/06) Hackettstown, N.J. --- On Tuesday afternoon the Washington Nationals drafted Centenary College pitcher Cole Kimball with the 361st pick.

The 6’5” 225-pound Kimball just finished his junior season with the Cyclones, where he went 6-4 with a 3.17 ERA.  In 71 innings pitched he struck out 76 batters and held opponents to .188 batting average.  A graduate of Hackettstown High School, and a resident of Great Meadows NJ, Centenary has been a terrific fit for Cole’s most recent two seasons.  In those two year’s Kimball has led the Centenary staff in strikeouts as well as helping the Cyclones win two consecutive Skyline Conference Baseball Championships and back-to-back NCAA Division III Tournament appearances.

Cyclones Season Ends with 16-3 Loss to E. Connecticut State.

(05/18/06) Auburn, N.Y.-- In the third game of the day at the rain soaked New York Regional in Auburn, NY the Centenary Cyclones (29-13) lost to E. Connecticut State (31-13) by the final of 10-3.  After a convincing 13-4 victory in the days opening game, Centenary was forced to sit around nearly the entire day while Game 6 of the Regional was delayed nearly two and a half hours by rain.  Once the Cyclones were ready to take the field for their second game it was just shy of 10:00pm on Thursday evening.

Once the game finally began the ECSU Warriors wasted no time getting on the board as they scored four times in the opening frame.  Shawn Gilblair singled home the first Warrior run in Greg Sullivan, as Sullivan opened the game with a walk.  ECSU's Zach Merbach later in the inning cleared the bases with a three-run double.  The Warriors then tacked on two more in the third and one in the fourth, as Centenary fell behind early 7-0.

Cyclone starter Mike Rossi (Old Bridge/Old Bridge) went just four innings, allowing seven hits, seven runs, and walking four.  The Centenary bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth, as they nearly cut the Warrior lead in half scoring three times.  Centenary picked up an RBI single from Chris Felix (Jamesburg/Monroe) while pushing across two more runs on a fielding error.

Unfortunately for Centenary, the ECSU scoring was not finished, as they added insurance runs in the fifth, seventh, and eighth cruising to a 16-3 victory.  Freshman pitcher Jimmy Jagodzinksi went eight strong innings, allowing just three runs on eight hits, while walking one and striking out ten Centenary batters. With the victory E. Connecticut State advances to tomorrow's loser-bracket semi-final versus the winner of RPI / St. Lawrence.  The loss eliminates Centenary from the regional, and ends the Cyclones season with a final record of 29-13.

Centenary Eliminates Endicott From NCAA NY Regional With 13-4 Win.

(05/17/06) Auburn, N.Y. -- The Centenary Cyclones recorded the program's first NCAA playoff win, highlighte by a seven-run seventh inning in a 13-4 win that eliminated the Endicott Gulls from the NCAA NY Regional at Auburn's Falcon Parl. Centenary will face Eastern Connecticut in Thursday at 5 p.m. in an elimination game.

Junior first baseman Pat Cassidy (North Hunterdon/Annandale, N.J.), senior right fielder Chris Felix (Monroe/Jamesburg, N.J.) and junior left fielder Bill Geitzeiler (Rumson-Fairhaven/Rumson, N.J.) each had three hits -- including a double apiece -- for the Cyclones, who recorded 15 hits. Cassidy's two-run single closed out the seven-run seventh that gave Centenary a 9-2 lead. Senior catcher Matt Hoffman (Morris Hills/Lafayette, N.J.) homered and doubled, driving in three runs.

Centenary scored 11 runs over the game's final four innings, pulling away from a 2-1 lead. Junior Cole Kimball (Hackettstown/Great Meadows, N.J.) earned the win by allowing just four hits, throwing 145 pitches in a seven-inning effort. He improved to 6-4, walking nine and striking out six. Senior first baseman Matt Bishop (Woburn/Woburn, Mass.) led the Gulls, powering solo home runs in the first and seventh for Endicott's first two runs.

Centenary (29-12) improves to 1-3 in NCAA playoff competition; Endicott finishes its season 23-22.

Centenary Falls to Third-Seeded Rensselaer, 14-2.

(05/17/06) Auburn, N.Y. -- The third-seeded Rensselaer Red Hawks broke open a one-run game with a seven-run fifth inning and cruised to a 14-2 win over sixth-seeded Centenary (N.J.) in the NCAA New York Regional at Falcon Park in Auburn. With the win -- the Red Hawks' school-record 34th of the season -- Rensselaer advances to play Ithaca in a winners' bracket game at 1 p.m. Thursday. Centenary will play Endicott in an elimination game Thursday at 10 a.m.

Senior left fielder Michael Passante (Highland/Highland) led Rensselaer with four hits (including two triples). His first triple came during the Red Hawks' fifth-inning outburst. Senior second baseman Rich Mundy (Norwood-Norfolk/Norwood) brought in the first two runs with a bases-loaded double. The inning also featured an RBI by sophomore right fielder Dan Valentine (Avon Old Farms/Goshen, Conn.) a run-scoring single by sophomore catcher Steve Slusher (Penns Grove/Pedricktown, N.J.) and three Cyclone errors.

Senior first baseman Joe Ihnatolya (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) collected three hits for Rensselaer; Valentine, Slusher and sophomore shortstop Matt Muscatiello (Ichabod Crane/Kinderhook) added two apiece. Valentine scored three runs.
Senior Charles Yarnold (Mount Olive/Budd Lake, N.J.) went the distance to earn the win, improving to 8-2. He struck out nine, did not walk a batter and retired 14 in a row from the fourth through the ninth.

Centenary took a lead in the top of the first; junior first baseman Pat Cassidy (North Hunterdon/Annandale, N.J.) singled in junior third baseman Brandon Perrine (North Hunterdon/Annandale, N.J.). Cassidy drove in both Centenary runs and finished with three of the Cyclones' six hits and Perrine added two.  Perrine scored both Cyclone runs.

The Red Hawks recorded their first NCAA playoff win since the 2002 College World Series; Centenary falls to 0-3 in two NCAA playoff appearances (the Cyclones lost to Ithaca and Cortland in last year's NCAA NY Regional).

CYCLONE BASEBALL DOES IT AGAIN!

With their backs against the wall, and needing to win four straight games on Saturday and Sunday, the Cyclone baseball team did just that.  In dramatic fashion, the Centenary squad rebounded from a loss on Thursday night to take down Stevens, Manhattanville, and St. Joe's-Patchogue twice in the matter 28 hours.

The Cyclones opened the weekend with a come from behind 3-1 win over the Ducks of Stevens in Saturday's 3:00pm game.  The boys then turned around and re-paid the Valiants of Manhattanville for the loss on Thursday, with a hard fought 1-0 defeat.  With those two wins, Centenary played itself into the Championship round versus St. Joe's-Patchogue on Sunday.  However in order to bring home the crown the Cyclones would have to beat SJP twice.  In the afternoon's first game Centenary turned around a 3-0 deficit in the bottom of the sixth, to rally and win 7-3.

The second game proved to be the toughest of them all.  After falling behind  2-0, Centenary tied the game in the top of the seventh.  From there both pitching staffs battled out of numerous tough situations keeping the game knotted at 2-2 until the 12th inning, when Centenary's Bill Geltzeiler (Rumson / Rumson-Fairhaven) smacked a single through the infield in the top of 12th inning, plating Chris Felix (Jamesburg / Monroe) with the eventual winning run.
With their unbelievable fourth victory in two days, Centenary won their second consecutive Skyline Conference Baseball Championship, and qualifies itself for a return trip to the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament in two weeks.

Freshman pitcher, Andrew Koncen (Elizabeth / Union Catholic) brought home Tournament MVP honors.  Koncen went 2-0 on the weekend, throwing 15 2/3 innings, allowing just one run, walking one, and striking out 18.

Cyclones Fall to Manhattanville, 7-1.

(05/04/06) Flemington, NJ --- On Thursday evening the Centenary baseball team dropped their opening round playoff game to Manhattanville by the final of 7-1.  The loss puts the Cyclones into the loser bracket for Saturday's next round of the Skyline Conference Tournament.

Centenary scored the first run of the game on an RBI double by Gerry Papa in the bottom of the first.  Unfortunately for Centenary that was it for their offense, as the combination of the Valiants Mark Barrar and Dan Alvarez silenced the Cyclone bats over the final eight innings.  Centenary did have two other opportunities to put runs on the board however but could not come up with the big hit.  In the second inning, the Cyclones loaded the bases with two outs but a groundout ended their threat.  Then again in the sixth with two men on and only one out, M'ville's Barrar escaped by striking out the next two Centenary batters.  In total both sides left nine runners on base, with either side having the opportunity to put the game away early.

For the Valiants their offense awoke in the fourth and in the eighth innings, as they capitalized their chances pushing five runs across in those two frames.  In the fourth Jeff Dunn put Manhattanville on the board scoring on a Centenary miscue, which two batters later was quickly followed by a sacrifice fly from Chris Sager, giving the visitors their first lead.  After tacking on an insurance in both the sixth and seventh innings, the Valiants held a 4-1 lead heading into the top of the eighth.  In the eighth Ted Rydeski opened with a single.  Then following two walks on either side of a sac bunt, Lou Annunziata flew out driving in Rydesky.  Two batters later Tom Verrengia drove in Stephen Pinto with an RBI single, and Jeff Dunn tallied his second RBI after being hit with a pitch, extending the lead to the eventual 7-1 margin.  Dan Alvarez came on in the ninth to set down the Cyclones and bring home the opening round victory for the Valiants.

In the loss for Centenary Gerry Papa went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Brandon Perrine had a hit and a run scored.  The tournament continues this weekend at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, NY, as Centenary moves on to play Stevens at 3:00pm on Saturday.  Stevens was a 3-0 loser to St. Joseph's - Patchogue earlier Thursday afternoon.

Cyclone Baseball Ranked 7th in New York Region - Koncen is Skyline's Rookie of the Week for 4th time.

(05/02/06) ---  The Centenary baseball team broke into the regional rankings on Monday afternoon, as the May 2nd poll of the ABCA (American baseball Coaches Association) was released.  The Cyclones are currently ranked #7 in the New York Region at 24-10, one spot higher than fellow Skyline member Stevens Institute of Technology (27-10).

In a separate announcement, freshman pitcher, Andrew Koncen, was chosen as the Skyline Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season.  Koncen threw his first career no-hitter, as well as, the first no-hitter in Centenary baseball history versus Stevens on Wednesday night.  He went all seven innings, striking out five, and not allowing a base runner past the fourth inning.

Cyclones Split with St. Joe's but Clinch Top Seed in Playoffs.

(04/30/06)  Patchogue, NY ---  In Patchogue, NY on Sunday the Cyclone baseball team did what they had to do, win the first game.  The 5-2 victory was enough for Centenary to clinch the #1 seed in this week's Skyline Conference Tournament.

Centenary used three pitchers to nail down the ninth inning victory.  Chris Mattson started the game, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits.  Erik Schmidt took care of the middle 1 1/3, setting down all four batters he faced, while Cole Kimball came on in the 7th inning to tally his fifth victory of the season.  In a 2-2 tie heading into the top of the ninth, Centenary's Chris Felix and Dave Vargo started the inning with back-to-back walks.  Following a sacrifice bunt by Matt Lindower in which both runners moved up, pinch runner Bill Geltzeiler scampered home with the go ahead run on a wild pitch.  After the second out the inning, lead-off batter Matt Hoffman and second batter Brandon Perrine were both walked to load the bases.  Todd Sigafoos promptly singled scoring Vargo, and Hoffman who came around on a poor relay throw. The three runs proved to be enough as Kimball after walking the first hitter in the ninth got a groundball double-play and a game ending grounder to finish of the contest.

In game two the host Golden Eagles struck for four runs in the first three innings.  They then proceeded to add two more in each of the next two, for a lead of 8-0 heading into the top of the sixth.  Centenary was held to just three hits, until the seventh when they broke through with a two-run single by Bill Geltzeiler and a SAC fly from Jason Loder, closing the gap to 8-3.  Unfortunately that would be as close as it would get.  Centenary's Mike Joest took the loss, going three innings and giving up four runs on five hits.  As for SJP, J. Atanasio went the distance, allowing just three runs on seven hits, while recording the win.

Centenary Takes Two from Old Westbury, Increases Conference Win Total to 13.

(04/29/06) Flemington, NJ ---  Earlier Saturday afternoon the Centenary baseball team improved to 13-3 in the Skyline Conference with a doubleheader sweep of Old Westbury.  The Cyclones took game 1 9-4, and the second 2-1, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh.

In the opener the Cyclones held a comfortable 7-1 lead heading into the top of 5th inning, compliments of a five-run fourth which was highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Chris Felix (Jamesburg / Monroe) and a two-run single by Brian Ciammara (Jackson / Jackson Memorial). In the fifth the visiting Panthers push two runs across, drawing to within a 7-3 deficit.  An inning later Old Westbury would add one more on a sacrifice fly by Darly Alacantra, pulling them to within three runs.  Centenary added two insurance runs, one in the bottom of the sixth and then another in the bottom of the eighth to seal the 9-4 victory.  Sophomore Mike Rossi (Old Bridge / Old Bridge) registered the win for the Cyclones, as freshman Erik Schmidt (East Stroudsburg, PA / East Stroudsburg) went the final three innings to notch the save.

In the second game both teams struggled to put hits together as they combined to leave 15 runners on base in the seven innings.  The Cyclones were again the team to score first, as catcher Matt Hoffman (Lafayette / Morris Hills) led off the game with a walk.  Hoffman then stole second and was driven in on Pat Cassidy (Annadale / North Hunterdon) RBI single.  Freshman pitcher Ben Jurgensen (West Milford / West Milford) held the lead until the top of the fourth inning, when the Panthers' Alcantra drove in Jamie Quinn who had reached on a fielder's choice, to tie the game at 1-1.

Over the next two innings both sides had their opportunities to score, but were unable to do so, until Centenary came up in the last of the seventh.  The inning began with a lead-off walk to Dave Vargo (Brick / Brick Memorial).  After pinch runner, Erik Schmidt (East Stroudsburg, PA / East Stroudsburg) was thrown out trying to steal second, the Cyclones loaded the bases for Brandon Perrine (Annadale / North Hunterdon). Perrine worked the count to 2-1, and hit a high bouncer to shortstop.  Old Westbury was unable to turn the double-play and Matt Lindower (East Brunswick / East Brunswick) crossed home plate with the winning run, giving Perrine the RBI and the Cyclones the 2-1 victory.

With the win, Centenary is now 13-3 in the Skyline Conference, and sits atop the conference standings heading into tomorrow's final regular season doubleheader versus St. Joe's-Patchogue.  Both games tomorrow on Long Island will have huge playoff implications since the Cyclones and St. Joe's are both in the hunt for the top seed in next weekend's Skyline Conference Tournament.

Koncen No-Hits Stevens, Cyclones Split with Ducks.

(04/26/06) Hackettstown, NJ ---  On Wednesday night the Centenary baseball team took the second game 2-0 on Andrew Koncen's first career no hitter, after dropping the first game 3-2.  The Cyclones improve to 21-9 overall, while the #17 ranked Ducks move to 24-8.  Both team are now 11-3 in the Skyline Conference.

In the afternoon's first game both hurlers kept the offenses in check until the bottom of the fifth.  In the home half, Centenary put their first two batters on, when Matt Lindower drew a leadoff walk, which was followed by a Matt Hoffman single.  That brought up the top of their order, Brian Ciamarra. Ciamarra promptly sacrificed the runners to second and third with one out.  Following a pop-up to the first basemen, Todd Sigafoos laced a two-out triple, that one hopped the centerfield fence, clearing the bases.

The Ducks however answered right back with three runs of their own, almost in the identical fashion as Centenary.  The innings leadoff batter walked, followed by a bunt single, and then a sacrifice bunt.  The two run scoring plays came on a run scoring infield error by Centenary off the bat of Adam Sandt and a two-run single by John Frustaci.  With Centenary attempting to play from behind, Stevens went to their bullpen.  The Ducks' Jim Waterman and Chris Burgess combined for the final nine outs, scattering just one Centenary hit.

In the nightcap the host Cyclones struck early plating two runs in the top of the first.  Catcher Matt Hoffman led off the bottom of the first with a single and later scored on a throwing error by Stevens pitcher Scott Picerno.  Hoffman's single was followed by a walk to Brandon Perrine, who scored on Pat Cassidy's sac fly.  The two runs proved to be enough for freshman Andrew Koncen whose first career no-hitter, and first no-hitter in the five year history of the Centenary baseball program, came on just 80 pitches.  Koncen allowed just four base runners all night, and none after the fourth inning.  The split keeps both teams tied atop the Skyline Conference standings with just one week of the regular season remaining.

Cyclone Baseball Take Two from Mount St. Mary.

(04/17/06) Hackettstown, NJ -- The Centenary baseball team improved to 17-7 overall and 8-2 in Skyline Conference play earlier today with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Mount Saint Mary.  The Cyclones took Game 1 in a convincing 10-3 decision, only to follow up with a hard fought 5-2 victory in Game 2.

In the afternoon's first contest the Knights of MSMC jumped on Centenary early, scoring two unearned runs in the second.  The Cyclones quickly responded with a tally in the bottom half of the inning.  Both teams again pushed across a run in third, moving the MSMC lead to 3-2 heading into the fourth.  After a 1-2-3 inning by Centenary pitcher Cole Kimball (Great Meadows/Hackettstown) in the visitors half, the Centenary bats came alive.  Chris Felix (Jamesburg/Monroe) and Dave Vargo (Brick/Brick Twp) opened the inning with a pair of singles.

Then after an out, senior Matt Hoffman (Lafayette/Morris Hills) delivered the first of his three hits, scoring Felix and Vargo on a throwing error.  A batter later Brian Ciamarra (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) drove in Hoffman with another RBI single.  From that point on Centenary never looked back, as Kimball settled in not allowing another MSMC batter to reach base over the next    3 1/3 innings.  The Cyclones bullpen staff, comprised of Erik Schmidt (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg) and Matt O'Leary (Somerset/Franklin) came on in the eighth and cleaned up the final five outs, as the Cyclones cruised to a 10-3 win.

The day's second game seemed to be turning into a pitchers duel as Centenary's Andrew Koncen (Elizabeth/Union Catholic) and the Knights' Scott Francis went through the first two innings without allowing a hit.  In the third MSMC again struck first on a fielding error by the Cyclones.  Then again just as in the first game, Centenary came right back with one of their own in the bottom half, when Brandon Perrine (Annadale/North Hunterdon) singled home Matt Lindower (East Brunswick/East Brunswick) who had reach on a lead-off single.  As the game moved in to the bottom of the fifth the scored was knotted at 2-2.  The Cyclones' Pat Cassidy (Annadale/North Hunterdon) led off the inning with a single, which was quickly followed by a sacrifice bunt, a walk, and another base hit.  Then after a fly-out Matt Hoffman again delivered in the clutch with a bases clearing triple.  The run cushion was enough for Koncen and Chris Mattson (Thorofare/West Deptford) who recorded the final three outs, to solidify Centenary's sweep.

For the afternoon Matt Hoffman finished with a 5-for-7, with a triple and five RBI's.  Pat Cassidy also did his part going 4-for-8 with two runs scored.  Centenary's top two pitcher Cole Kimball and Andrew Koncen both recorded victories improving to 4-2 and 6-1 respectively.  As for Mount Saint Mary  in the losses Anthony Forgione went 2-for-5 with an RBI.  MSMC drops to 4-13 overall and 1-11 in the Skyline Conference.

Cyclones Sweep D.H. with Drew.

(04/14/06) Madison, NJ –-- The Cyclone baseball team improved to 15-7 with a doubleheader sweep of Drew University earlier Friday afternoon.  Centenary took Game 1 by a final of 5-4, scoring the deciding run in the top of seventh inning on an RBI single by Pat Cassidy.  Cassidy finished the day with two hits and the game winning RBI.  Brandon Perrine also added two hits and three runs scored in the opener.  Centenary top two hurlers Cole Kimball (3.0 innings) and  Andrew Koncen (2.2 innings) combined for the first six innings, each registering a no decision.  Chris Mattson recorded the Game 1 victory in relief, for his first win of the season.

In Game 2 the Cyclones jumped out an early 4-0 lead scoring four times in the first inning.  The host Rangers however made a strong comeback, eventually taking the lead back from Centenary in the bottom of the fourth, when they scored three times for a 7-4 advantage.  Centenary responded with another four-spot in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a Pat Cassidy double that scored two runs, to go along with a Chris Felix sac fly and an RBI single by Matt Hoffman.  The one run cushion held up over the next three frames, and the visitors escaped with their second single-run victory.  The Centenary bullpen again registered the decision as Erik Schmidt notched the victory and Chris Mattson the save.

Richard Stockton Shuts Out Centenary 11-0.

(04/12/06) Hackettstown, NJ –-- Earlier this afternoon, the Centenary baseball team took on Richard Stockton and lost 11-0.

Stockton's pitcher, Drew Slickmeyer (Stratford, NJ / Sterling) allowed no runs and three hits and tallied seven strike outs in eight innings of pitching before getting relieved by Nick Barbagli (Newfield, NJ / Buena) in the bottom of the eighth.

After a scoreless first inning, the Osprey's bats came alive and jumped out to an early 4-0 lead from five hits.  Singles came from Mike Liquori (Manahawkin, NJ / Carteret), Chris Herman (Toms River, NJ / Toms River North) and Eric Markussen (Iselin, NJ / JFK) to get on base and would eventually be brought in by two RBI doubles from Joe Sacerdote and Chris Crescenzi (Pedricktown, NJ / Penns Grove).

With the momentum shifted toward Stockton, the Ospreys stepped up to the plate in the third inning and drove in six runs from five hits.  Liquori would single to centerfield driving in two runs and would end the day going 3-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored.   Crescenzi, who went 3-for-5 with five RBI's and two runs scored, hit a three-run homerun to put Stockton up 10-0 in the third.  Sacerdote would end the day with a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored.  Stockton would eventually score one more run in the eighth to close out the game at 11-0.

Today's win improves Richard Stockton to 13-13 overall as Centenary drops to 13-7 overall.

Centenary 2006 Season with a Split at Frostburg State.

In the afternoon's opener, the Cyclones took an early 2-1 lead in the 3rd inning on an RBI single by Brian Ciammara.  Centenary's Cole Kimball held Frostburg scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the hosts tied it 2-2.  The game stayed knotted into the bottom of the sixth, when the hosts pushed a run across on a wild pitch.  Frostburg's John Micklus came on in the seventh to close the door and hold on for the one-run victory.

In the second half of the doubleheader, the roles were reversed as Frostburg took the 1-0 lead early in the game.  Centenary was shutout through the opening three frames, but the in the fourth the Cyclones broke through to tie the game 1-1 on a double by Dave Vargo.
