The Centenary College Wrestling program enters the 2005-2006 season coming off their first winning season a year ago. The Cyclone finished 8-7 in head-to-head matches under fifth year Head Coach Doug Fink. The team returns ten wrestlers off last year's roster, including one National Qualifier (Mike Gummerson) and two NWCA Academic All-Americans (Greg Tierney and Seth Wisner). Tierney and fellow senior, Andrew Haubois are the two Cyclones that will be looked to for leadership this winter. Both men are looking to cap off their four-year careers with a trip to Nationals, and are using that as their top form of motivation. Following a year off Keith Kubicek, an Academic All-American himself in 03-04, will also be looking to repeat the accomplishment along with Tierney and Wisner.
With all of the returning talent, along with a group of incoming freshman, Coach Fink is expecting another successful year in both tournaments and dual matches. The team opens its first semester with three consecutive tournaments at Ithaca, King's and Springfield Colleges. From there the Cyclones will have a few weeks to recover before heading into their head-to-head matches later in the month of December. Sophomore Mike Gummerson, is the programs top returnee from last year. After his appearance at the Division III National Tournament last spring, he is striving for a return trip there this winter, and will be looking to improve his performance by placing in the top eight and achieving All-American status.
The team is looking forward to the Metropolitan Conference Championships at the end of the year. They will look to improve on previous finishes with their sights set on a top four finish. They will face some tough competition at the qualifier with perennial powers Montclair State, York, and the College of New Jersey. However, with the strong returning team members and talented group of newcomers, the Cyclones should meet and exceed their expectations.
