The third-seeded Garnet are looking to win their third-consecutive ECAC South Championship and will face second-seed Stevenson on Saturday, Nov. 14, in Owings Mills, Md. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Denti (Sergentsville, N.J./Hunterdon Central) posted nine saves in the loss. The majority of the first half was a defensive struggle, as both teams had opportunities but were unable to convert. In the eighth minute, Centenary had a great chance to get on the scoreboard. Santulli sent a long through ball up the right side to freshman Caroline Mountney (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield). Mountney one-timed the ball to a cutting Sam Vanni (Haskell, N.J./Lakeland), giving her a one-on-one with SU goalkeeper Marie Mutryn, but Vanni’s shot sailed wide. Swarthmore scored all three of its goals in a nine minute span towards the end of the opening period. In the 32nd minute, SU’s Kirstin Peterson’s shot was blocked by Denti and the ball trickled to the right side of the box. Swarthmore was able to get the ball into the box for Kelsey Cline, whose shot was blocked. But Centenary was unable to clear and Peterson was given a second chance at a score. This time she didn’t miss, drilling a shot past a diving Denti for the 1-0 lead. Less than three minutes later, Maggie DeLorme scored on a header off a corner kick by Taylor Rhodes, giving the home team a 2-0 lead. Six minutes after that, Centenary was again unable to clear a Swarthmore attack and Rhodes sent a laser from 35 yards out that went in above the outstretched arms of Denti for the 3-0 edge. In the second half, the Lady Cyclones were able to hold their opponent scoreless, despite 14 shots from the Garnet. The game marked the second ECAC Tournament appearance for the Lady Cyclones in the past three years and their first since 2007. Centenary Women’s Soccer Receives ECAC South Tournament Bid

RADNOR, Pa. (November 4, 2009) – The third-seeded Centenary women’s soccer team was unable to come back from an early 2-0 deficit at second-seed Cabrini, eventually falling, 3-1, in the semifinals of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament, Wednesday in Radnor, Pa. The Lady Cyclones (14-4-1) were unable to give head coach Kevin Davies his 100th career victory. Cabrini (13-5-1) advances to face top-seeded Marywood in the CSAC Championship game on Saturday at 3:00p.m., as part of the CSAC Fall Festival on the campus of Immaculata University. Today’s game marked the Lady Cyclones’ third consecutive trip to their conference semifinals and their fourth overall. Centenary falls to 2-2 all-time in semifinal games, with wins over Manhattanville (5-0 at home on Nov. 5, 2003) and Misericordia (2-1 at home on Oct. 31, 2007), and the other loss to Gwynedd-Mercy (1-0 on the road on Nov. 5, 2008). Cabrini jumped out to a fast start, scoring in the fourth and the seventh minutes to take an early 2-0 lead. The Cavaliers’ first goal was a moon shot from Heather Thompson that Centenary goalkeeper Ashley Denti (Sergentsville, N.J./Hunterdon Central) caught, but her momentum carried her into the goal for the score. Cabrini then scored the more conventional way, when Sammy Thompson sent a pass from the right side into the box, where Annmarie Kolla corralled it and sent it past Denti for the two-goal lead. Cabrini did not allow Centenary a shot until the 24th minute, when junior Jazmine Farrell (Newton, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan)’s attempt was stopped by Cavaliers goalkeeper Maddy Edwards. In the 34th minute, the Lady Cyclones had two very good opportunities to score but were turned away. Farrell received a pass in the box and ripped a shot that was blocked by Edwards. The ball bounced right in front of the goal, but Centenary was unable to get to it before it was cleared. Then, sophomore Kristyn Lehmann (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) sent a pass into the box for junior Bianca Santulli (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), but her shot was saved by the Cabrini keeper. The Cavaliers went into halftime with a 2-0 lead. In the second half, after a Centenary corner kick, the Cavaliers were able to counter attack. Denti stopped a one-on-one attempt, but the ball trickled back to Sabina Degisi and she passed it to Kara Hinklemon, 30 yards away from the goal. Hinklemon sent a low screamer that sailed past Denti into the back of the net. Centenary finally got on the board in the 62nd minute. The Lady Cyclones were able to set up a counter-attack when senior Kiti Ovaskainen (Helsinki, Finland/Vaskivuoren Lukio) got the ball to Santulli, who crossed midfield and passed it ahead to junior Sam Vanni (Haskell, N.J./Lakeland). Vanni passed to a cutting Caroline Mountney (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield), who found herself in a one-on-one situation with the Cabrini keeper. The freshman was able to send the ball to the lower left hand side of the goal for the score. The Lady Cyclones had many opportunities to get closer, but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. In the 71st minute, Mountney received the ball right in front of the goal but her shot went just wide. Less than two minutes later, Mountney ripped another shot that was blocked by the Cabrini keeper. The ball bounced right in front of the goal, but Santulli was unable to get a clean shot off and the Cavaliers cleared. In the 75th minute, off a flip throw from Vanni, the ball bounced high in front of the goal but Caitlin Veverka (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy)’s header was blocked and Danielle Dole (Wall, N.J./Wall)’s shot sailed high. Although Centenary lost, the team has a chance to earn a berth to the ECAC South Tournament. That announcement will be made on Monday, Nov. 9. Centenary Women’s Soccer Ready For CSAC Semifinals

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (October 19, 2009) – The Centenary women’s soccer team is giving back to the community the best way they know how: through the game of soccer. The Lady Cyclones hold a clinic for pre-kindergarten boys and girls, every Friday, from 5:30p.m. to 6:30p.m., at the Independence Soccer Club in Vienna, N.J. Head coach Kevin Davies came up with the idea after attending a meeting with the Independence Soccer Club. “The committee members were discussing a pre-kindergarten clinic and how much it would cost, and I suggested that my girls do it for free,” said Davies. “When I presented it to the team, they jumped at the idea. So far we have completed five sessions and the feedback from the committee, the parents and the kids has been great.” Each week a group of pre-kindergarten boys and girls gather at the Independence Soccer Club to learn how to play soccer through games and other activities. Each game uses a skill necessary for soccer, such as dribbling, passing or shooting, and the children end each clinic with a scrimmage. Junior Sam Vanni (Haskell, N.J./Lakeland) coordinates the clinics; she and a rotating group of three or four other Centenary women’s soccer players lead each event. “Sam Vanni is coordinating the clinics and we meet once a week to organize the sessions,” said Davies. “They are all about fun games with the soccer ball.
