(4/13/08) - This past weekend the Centenary women's lacrosse team was hosted by PAC opponent Gywnedd Mercy.  Despite a well played second half, the Lady Cyclones fell to the Griffins 15-9.

The women dug themselves a hole in the first half scoring only three goals to Gywnedd Mercy’s nine. Centenary was outshot by the Griffins 24-7 and twice allowed the Griffins to go on a four goal scoring run that gave them the advantage at the break.

The second half was like a different game as the Lady Cyclones matched up evenly with the Griffins, outshooting them 21-17.  Each team managed to find the back of the net six times.  Unfortunately for the women, their performance in the first half took its toll as the women fell by a final score of 15-9.

Cabrini netted three quick goals to gain an early advantage over the Lady Cyclones only five minutes into the game.  An unassisted goal by Michelle Garone (West Hempstead, NY/West Hempstead) got Centenary on the board three minutes later however, the Cavaliers would record two more to increase their lead to four.  A free position shot by Kiti Ovaskainen (Helsinki, Finland/Vaskeineoreo Lukio) scored and an unassisted goal by Megan Mars (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) helped the Lady Cyclones close the gap a little until Erin Nollen found the back of the net for her second and third goals of the game.  The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the first half and the score stood at 9-5 as the halftime buzzer sounded.

The women were held scoreless in the second half while senior goalkeeper Clare Johnson (Morristown/Morristown) got more than her share of the action, making 13 saves in that period alone.  She grabbed a total of 25 throughout the match.  Despite her superb play, the Cavaliers were able to record eight more before the end of the game and beating Centenary by twelve.

The first goal of the second period belonged to Centenary as Michelle Garone (West Hempstead, NY/West Hempstead) snuck a ball she received from Ovaskainen, past Immaculata’s keeper Melanie Suarez.  Becker recorded another goal soon after, but the Mac’s would come back with two goals by Rebecca Whiteman in the 9th and 13th minutes. From this point on, the play would be all Centenary as they tallied four more goals before the final whistle blew to make the score 19-4.

Women Defeated by Neumann College 18-12

(3/14/08) The Centenary women’s lacrosse team traveled down to Aston, Pennsylvania yesterday to take on the Knights of Neumann College in a PAC Conference match-up.    Despite matching Neumann for the first 10 minutes of play the women could not hold on, eventually succumbing to the Knights 18-12.

Neumann jumped out to an early lead, scoring five goals in the first seven minutes of play but the women slowly worked their way back with goals by Michelle Garone (West Hempstead/West Hempstead), Lauren Feldman (Sicklerville/Washington Twp.) and Nicole Becker (Randolph/Randolph) to tie the game up at six a piece.  Unfortunately, Centenary could not keep up as the Knights again went on a six goal scoring run to stretch their lead to 12-6 after halftime.
