Jones, Roberts Chosen for All-Conference Team.

(02/27/07) Junior Jessa Jones (South Plainfield / South Plainfield)  and sophomore Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) were both named to the Conference’s Second Team after a season in which both players finished the year averaging 14 and 13 points respectively.  Both players also finished within one rebound of each other for the team lead with Roberts grabbing 9.1 rpg and Jones finishing at 8.7.  Roberts’ average was good enough for 86th in the country among Division III players.  Within the Skyline Conference the duo finished being ranked in the top-10 for scoring and in the top-5 for rebounding.

Lady Cyclones Fall Short 60-52

(2/12/07) The Centenary women’s basketball team fell to The College of Staten Island in their first ever game in the newly renovated Folkner Family Gymnasium in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center 60-52. 

The Lady Cyclones took the lead early outscoring the Dolphins by a one in the opening six minutes of play. Both teams traded baskets over the next few minutes pushing the game into its first tie at 17-17.  The Cyclones again took a 25-24 advantage on Lyndsay Edwards (Staten Island/St. John’s Villa Academy) three-pointer with just over 8 minutes to play.  CSI’s Nicole Estrada (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearny) gave the visitors a 28-27 lead which they would push to 37-33 by the halftime break.   

In the first three minutes of the second half the Dolphins lead grew to 45-35.  Centenary regrouped, outscoring CSI 12-4 over the next ten minutes cutting the deficit to just two points.  The Lady Cyclones were never able to get closer, scoring just three points in the closing six minutes of play.   Staten Island converted just 5-of-10 free throws down the stretch, holding on for the 60-52 victory.

Sophomores Nicole Estrada and Melanie D’Ambrosi (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph Hill) led the Dolphins with 19 and 17 points respectively.  D’Ambrosi also grabbed a team high 12 rebounds.  For Centenary, junior Jessa Jones (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) scored 16 points and tallied 14 rebounds while freshman Kristen Camuso (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph’s by the Sea) chipped in with 10.   BOXSCORE

Mount Saint Mary Handle Lady Cyclones 94-65

(2/5/07)  The visiting women of Mount Saint Mary College defeated Centenary College earlier tonight by the final of 94-65.  The victory improves MSMC to 18-3 on the year, while the Lady Cyclones fall to 11-9, 5-9 in the Skyline Conference.

Mount Saint Mary opened the game on an 11-0 run which included three straight made three-pointers, two from Chantel Anthony (Middletown, NY/Middletown) and one from Annie Cossolini (Fanwood, NJ/St. Dominic Academy).  From there the visitors never trailed, opening a first half advantage of as many as 19 points (36-17) with just over three minutes to go in the period.  Centenary trailed by just 13 by the halftime break, outscoring MSMC 8-2 over closing three minutes.  In the second half of play, the Blue Knights inside game proved to be too much for the Lady Cyclones as MSMC shot an outstanding 56% from the field (19-for-34), in route to a 56-40 scoring advantage in the final twenty minutes of play. 

The visitors were led by junior Chantel Anthony who scored 20 points, including four three-pointers, and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line.  Teammates Jackie Markert (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) added a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden), and LaSheena Brown (Malverne, NY/Malverne) chipped in with double figures scoring 12 and 10 points respectively.  For the Lady Cyclones in the loss Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) led all scorers with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Jessa Jones (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) added 19 points and six boards.    BOXSCORE

Women's Basketball Falls to Farmingdale 103-96

(2/3/07) The Centenary Lady Cyclones fell in a close game to Skyline opponent Farmingdale State tonight.  Centenary came into this game tonight looking to improve their conference record.  The visiting Rams put four players in double figures and held off the Lady Cyclones for the 103-96 high scoring victory. 

The Lady Cyclones trailed by just six going into halftime but were unable get any closer as the Centenary women were not able to overcome the Lady Rams.  For Farmingdale, junior Christine Daley (Elmont, NY/Elmont) lead the team with 28 points on the night.   

Leading the Lady Cyclones in scoring with 24 points was the Bakersfield California native Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South)Roberts also lead the women in rebounds with 12.  Junior Jessa Jones (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) added to the Cyclones total, scoring 22 points, ten of which were from the free throw line.  Three other Lady Cyclones were able to score in double figures, Laura Feigus (Colts Neck/St. Rose) (13), Kristen Camuso (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph's by the Sea) (11), and Ayana Way (Edison/John P. Stevens) (10).  

Centenary is currently 11-8 for the season and 5-8 in the Skyline Conference. They look to improve their record when they play the number one team in the Skyline Conference, Mount Saint Mary on Monday, February 5th.  BOXSCORE

Women Drop Nailbiter to Manhattanville 70-69

(1/27/07) The Centenary Lady Cyclones came into the game tonight looking for their fifth straight victory.  The Valiant’s from Manhattanville, unfortunately for the Cyclones, had other ideas and stole the victory 70-69 in the closing seconds of the game. 

The Lady Cyclones lead was cut to 39-35 at the halftime break, after leading by as many as 10 at one point in the opening period.  Visiting Manhattanville continued to claw their way out of the early hole and were rewarded with their first lead in the final two minutes of the game of regulation.  The Valiants held off a last second effort by the Lady Cyclones, when Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) of Centenary, was stripped of the ball pushing it forward for a last second look.

Junior Jessa Jones (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) led the Lady Cyclones in scoring with 22 points while freshman Kristen Panariello (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph’s By the Sea) added 21.  Jones also tallied 13 rebounds, notching her third double-double of the season.  For Manhattanville Olivia Nastasi (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) scored a team high 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Nina Johnson (White Plains, NY/Mount Vernon) totaled 14 points and 17 boards.

The loss drops Centenary to 11-5, 5-5 in the Skyline Conference, while Manhattanville improves to 5-14, 3-7 on the year.  BOXSCORE  

Lady Cyclones Take Down Ducks For Fourth Straight Win.

(1/24/07) The Centenary women won their fourth straight game on Wednesday evening in dramatic fashion, knocking off the Ducks of Stevens 58-55.  The win improves the Lady Cyclones to 11-4 overall, 5-4 in the Skyline Conference.  Junior Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) and junior Laura Feigus (Colts Neck / St. Rose) scored 19 points apiece as Centenary posted just their second road victory of the season. 

Centenary led the host Ducks 53-44 with just under five minutes to go in the game.  Over the next three minutes, thanks to Stevens’ Dani Dudek, the Ducks had pulled within two points at 53-51.  Then with just 1:14 left on the clock junior Jean Matusiak tied the score at 53-53 with a jumper.  Centenary’s Feigus responded with a huge three-pointer, pushing the women back in front 56-53 with 44 seconds remaining.  Stevens responded as Sarah Gehring hit a pull-up jumper in the lane to bring the Ducks to within one point, and 32 ticks left. 

Following a missed free throw by Centenary, Stevens had a chance to take the lead, but a three-pointer from the left wing rimmed out of bounds and was awarded back to Stevens.  On the ensuing in-bounds play, Stephanie Roberts forced a jump-ball and Centenary took over possession of the ball. 

With 6.5 seconds left, Feigus was fouled, but she missed the front end of a one-and-one.  Centenary’s Ayana Way (Edison/John P. Stevens) came up with a big offensive rebound and was also fouled.  Way calmly stepped to the line and knocked down both free throws putting the Lady Cyclones back up by three.  With no timeouts, Stevens raced down court, but Dora Enright turned the ball over as her pass sailed out of bounds with 0.9 seconds to go.

Jessa Jones (South Plainfield / South Plainfield) finished the game with 15 points and eight rebounds.  Roberts also posted three steals and three assists to go along with 19 points, while Feigus added five rebounds to her 19 point effort.

For Stevens Sarah Gehring finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Enright added 10 points and eight rebounds.  Dani Dudek chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds for the Ducks, which had its five-game win streak snapped.  BOXSCORE

Roberts and Lady Cyclones Make it Three Straight with 90-67 Win.

(1/22/07) Earlier tonight the Centenary Women’s Basketball team increased their winning streak to three games with a 90-67 conference win over The United States Merchant Marine Academy.  The win moves Centenary to 10-4 overall, 4-4 in the Skyline.
 

Centenary who fell behind early after USMMA opened the contest with consecutive three-point field goals, used a very aggressive full-court press to get themselves back into the game.  The Lady Cyclones forced the visiting Mariners into 19 first half turnovers, and just 31 points on 11-of-32 shooting from the field.  Centenary converted numerous turnovers into easy baskets in route to 41-31 advantage at the halftime break.  In the second half USMMA was unable to come up with answer for the Centenary pressure, turning the ball over another 19 times.  At one point in the final ten minutes of play the Centenary lead reached 30 points at 86-56, prior to calling off the pressure and registering the 23-point victory.
 

For Centenary Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) scored a game high 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out eight assists.  Teammates Lyndsay Edwards (Staten Island, NY/St. John’s Villa Academy) and Ayana Way (Edison/John P. Stevens) added 13 and 12 points respectively, while Kristen Panariello (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph’s by the Sea) tallied 12 and Laura Feigus (Colts Neck/St. Rose) chipped in with 10.  USMMA’s Andrea Carey paced the visitors with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Kristen Hetsko added 11.  BOXSCORE

Lady Cyclones Win Second Straight 63-54

(1/20/07) In the day’s opener, the Centenary Lady Cyclones won their second straight game downing Old Westbury 63-54 to improve to 9-4 on the season, 3-4 in the Skyline Conference.  The women used a very active zone defense in the opening half to hold the visiting Panthers to just 25% shooting from the floor, allowing them to open a 36-23 halftime lead.  In the second half both teams opened up their offenses a bit more and played a more up tempo style.  Old Westbury made a valiant run at the hosts outscoring them 31-27 in the period.  The four point difference however wasn’t enough as Centenary took the nine point victory.  For Centenary junior Jessa Jones (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) led the way scoring 15 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, before fouling out in the game’s final two minutes.  Freshman Lyndsay Edwards (Staten Island, NY/St. John’s Villa Academy) and junior Laura Feigus (Colts Neck/St. Rose) each added double digits totaling 12 and 11 points respectively.  Nicole Van Tassel (Franklin/Walkill Valley) came off the bench to contribute three points and 12 rebounds.  Old Westbury falls to 9-5 overall, 4-4 in the Skyline with the loss.  The Panthers’ Monique Midy (Westbury, NY/Westbury), the only OW player in double figures, scored a game-high 27 points on 10-for-19 shooting.  Midy also added five rebounds to her cause in the loss.

Lady Cyclones Put Six in Double Figures for 102-27 Win.

(1/18/07) Earlier tonight the Lady Cyclones of Centenary coasted to a 102-27 victory over College of New Rochelle, for their ninth victory of the season.

The Centenary women opened the game by scoring the first 16 points and never looked back.  By the time the clock had reached the 15:00 mark of the half, the host Lady Cyclones had already extended the lead to 23-2.  Centenary shot an even 50% (25-for-50) from the field in the opening half, and led the visiting Blue Angels by the score of 57-7 at the intermission.  The second half was more of the same for the home team.  Centenary again shot a blistering percentage in the closing twenty minutes, going 20-for-46 from the field (43.5%).  Freshman Kristen Panariello (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph’s by the Sea) and junior Ayana Way (Edison/Jon P. Stevens) led the scoring totaling 16 points each.  Alix O’Neil (New London, CT/New London) added 13 points, while Jessa Jones (South Plainfield/South Plainfield), Laura Feigus (Colts Neck/St. Rose), and Nicole Van Tassel (Franklin/Walkill Valley) round out the double figures netting 12, 11, and 10 points respectively.  The victory improves the Lady Cyclones to 8-4 overall, heading into the weekend’s Skyline contest versus Old Westbury.
 

In the loss for College of New Rochelle, junior Ruchelle Austin (Sheepshead Bay / Brooklyn, NY) scored a team high 19 points and grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds.  The Blue Angels fall to 4-5 on the season with the road loss.  BOXSCORE

Lady Cyclones Drop 76-50 Decision to Steven's.

(1/8/07)  The Centenary Lady Cyclones came into this game tonight looking for their second straight Skyline Conference victory.  Unfortunately, the Lady Ducks from Steven’s Institute of Technology were able to fend off the Cyclones, defeating the women 76-50. 
The Lady Cyclones struggled early, scoring only 15 points in the first half of the game.  The women pressed hard to close the gap with Stevens in the second half of play, however, despite their efforts, Centenary was never able to gain the lead.  The women did succeed in picking up the pace scoring 35 points in the second half, just shy of Steven’s 39. 

Leading the Lady Cyclones in scoring was the Bakersfield California native Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South)Roberts also lead the women in rebounds with 12.  Laura Feigus (Colts Neck/Saint Rose) added to the Cyclones total, scoring 13 points, nine of which were from three point shots. 

Centenary is currently 5-3 for the season and 1-3 in the Skyline Conference. They look to improve their record when they play on the road against non-conference opponent York College, Thursday January 11th. BOXSCORE    

 

Centenary Freshman and Teammates Highly Ranked in Season's First Report.

(1/3/07) As of NCAA first Statistical report on December 31st, the Centenary College Women’s Basketball team and freshman standout Kristen Panariello (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph’s by the Sea) were ranked in the Top 20 of numerous Statistical Categories. 
 

The Lady Cyclones were the #1 ranked scoring team in NCAA Division III, averaging 88.5 points per game through their first six contests.  The team was also listed as seventh in scoring margin (+27), and 38th in field goal percentage (44.0%). 
 

As an individual, Panariello was ranked 38th in scoring, averaging 18.8 points per game, ranked 11th in steals per game (4.2), and in a tie for 20th in free-throw shooting percentage converting on a 88.9% from the stripe.   LINK

Lady Cyclones Drop to 0-2 In Skyline with 78-69 Loss.

(12/15/06) The Centenary Women’s Basketball team dropped their second consecutive Skyline game, losing 78-69 Farmingdale State. The host Rams led the majority of the half after opening a 20-4 lead in the half’s first ten minutes.  However, the Lady Cyclones stormed back, cutting the deficit to three points by the halftime break. Farmingdale quickly regained the momentum in second half, building the lead back up to 12 points in the first three minutes.  With the visitors never making a closing run, the Rams would hold on for the nine point victory.
 
For the Centenary, junior Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) posted game-highs of 27 points and 15 rebounds, while junior Jessa Jones (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) and freshman Kristen Panariello (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph’s by the Sea) each totaled 14 points.  The loss drops the Lady Cyclones to 4-2, 0-2 in the Skyline Conference.  The women are now off until the new year, when they travel to St. Joe’s-Patchogue on January 6th for a game at 4:30 pm.  BOXSCORE

Women's Hoops drops Skyline Opener

(12/7/06 @ CMSV) In the night’s first game the Lady Cyclones fell behind 38-32 after the opening half, despite freshman Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South) scoring all of her 11 points in the period.  Centenary opened the second half recharged an actually tied the game on two separate occasions, once at 38-38 following a pair of free throws by Jessa Jones (South Plainfield / South Plainfield) and then again a few minutes later when Jones again sank two from the line, to knot it at 40-40.  However over the next six minutes the host Dolphins would out score Centenary 15-7, pushing the advantage back to eight points with just over 11 minutes remaining.  The closest the Lady Cyclones would come over the final stretch was cutting the deficit to two points, on a few occasions.  The final push came when freshman Kristen Camusa (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph’s by the Sea) drained a 3-pointer with 1:44 showing on the clock.  CMSV held on for the 82-74 victory despite shooting 4-for-8 from the line in the closing 90 seconds of the game.  Centenary was paced by Jessa Jones who scored 18 points, while grabbing 11 rebounds.  Roberts added 11 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.  BOXSCORE

Second Straight for Panariello

(12/6/06)  On Monday, Centenary College freshman Kristen Panariello (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph’s by the Sea) was named Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week.
 

Panariello, the Lady Cyclones leading scorer through the team’s first four games, is averaging just over 21 points per game.  This total also ranks her first in the Skyline Conference within the Women’s Basketball rankings.  Last week in the two in two lop-sided victories for the Centenary Women, Panariello scored 46 points, while grabbing 11 rebounds, and handing out nine assists.  She set a new career high, recording 28 points in the win over NYC Tech last Tuesday night.
 

The Centenary women are currently 4-0, and off to the best start in the history of the program.  The Lady Cyclones look to make it five straight, when they travel to College of Mount Saint Vincent on Wednesday evening for their first Skyline Conference game of the season.

Panariello Named Skyline Rookie of the Week

(11/27/06)  Earlier this week Centenary Women’s Basketball player Kristen Panariello (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph’s by the Sea), was named as the Skyline Conference’s Rookie of the Week for her outstanding play in the seasons opening week.

Panariello scored 39 points, on 14-for-27 shooting (51%) from the field, in the team’s two victories over Wilson College and Pennsylvania College of Technology.  Panariello’s totals led the Lady Cyclones in scoring for both contests, as she recorded the Rookie honor is the season’s first week of nominations.  While her 19.5 ppg average is currently good enough for third in the Skyline Conference, she is also making it happen the defensive end as well, totaling 12 steals in the two games of action. 

Kristen and the Lady Cyclones will begin Conference play next week, when the team travels to Mount Saint Vincent on Wednesday, December 6th for their opening Skyline contest of the season.

2006-2007 Women's Basketball Preview

The Centenary College women's basketball team looks to turn the heat up for 2006-2007 season, as they return seven players from a year ago.  Last winter the team produced the best record in four seasons, along with qualifying for the Skyline Conference tournament for the third consecutive year. 

Led by second year head coach Lorie Khalil, the Lady Cyclones look to make a statement in their final season in the Skyline Conference before joining the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) next season (07-08).

 
Among the talented returnees are junior point guard Ayana Way (/Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens), junior guard Laura Feigus (Colts Neck, NJ/St. Rose) and junior Jessa Jones (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield). Way returns as the team’s floor leader.  Last winter she averaged 8.5 points and 1.5 assist per game.  Feigus returns as the back-court mate of Way and brings an outside shooting threat to the floor for Centenary.  In 05-06 Feigus averaged nearly seven points per game, while converting nearly 76% of her free throws.  Jones, the team’s leading rebounder (10.7 rpg) and second leading scorer (10.7 ppg), a season ago, finished the year averaging a double-double and was ranked in the Top-20 for Div. III in rebounds per game.  Sophomore guard Tina Stawinski(Sayreville, NJ/Bishop AHR) and lone senior Tanyall Law (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) round out the returnees for the Lady Cyclones.

Centenary is extremely excited about its incoming class of eight talented freshman, and one junior college transfer.  Among the incoming class are freshmen Kristen Panariello (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph’s-by-the-Sea) and Alix O'Neil (New London, CT/New London).   Panariello and O’Neil both come to Centenary following stellar high school careers where each player reached the 1,000 point plateau. Lyndsay Edwards (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa), Kristen Camuso (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph’s-by-the-Sea), and Tiara Byrd (Chester, PA/Concord Christian) round out the influx of freshman guards for the Lady Cyclones.  Freshman Nikki Van Tassel (Walkill Valley, NJ/Walkill) and Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, CA/South), a transfer from Bakersfield Community College, will both play a major role from the post position.
