RBI doubles by left fielder Andrea Meise (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond) and Christina D’Arpa (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) added two more to The Dolphins score, however an RBI single by Stephani Bickel (Brick/Manasquan) and a hit by Stephanie Burrini (Randolph/Randolph) helped make up the deficit by scoring two runs for Centenary. A single by Lauren Cassoff (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) in the bottom of the fifth scored Jenna Wendolowski (Jersey City/Holy Family Academy) to shrink the Dolphins lead to one going into the sixth inning. Staten Island was able to find their groove in the sixth, smacking two singles, two doubles and a triple for four runs in the top of the inning making the score 10-5. The Dolphin’s pitcher Kari Drew Varriale (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) walked sophomore Megan Dunne (Frenchtown/Delaware Valley Regional), adding another run to the women’s total. A double by Cassoff scored two more for the Lady Cyclones and brought the game back in reach but unfortunately Centenary was not able to pull out the victory as both teams went scoreless in the seventh and the game ended with a score of 10-8. A regular in the Skyline Conference Tournament since joining the league, they look to make a fourth straight and final appearance before joining the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference next season. With a .673 winning percentage since joining the Skyline, expectations are to be right back in the thick of things this season. Experience will be a key factor for the Centenary softball team this upcoming season. The Lady Cyclones return every starter in the infield and are led by junior Lauren Cassoff. A career .357 hitter, Cassoff finished either first or second in numerous offensive categories last season and will once again be a force in middle of the line-up. Seniors Stephanie Burrini and Jennifer Vail will provide valuable leadership to the infield. Vail a NFCA Academic All-American will use her versatility to be help out in multiple positions. The senior co-captain Burrini will serve as the team’s first baseman and be used in the middle part of the line-up. The middle infield will be locked down by sophomores Jolyn Veres and Jenna Wendolowski. Veres has great range at shortstop and will be used at the top of the line-up. Wendolowski defensive prowess will be important to the overall success of the team’s defense. Freshman Stephanie Pareja, one of the fastest players on the teams, will add quality depth in the infield. Junior Jessa Jones will be patrolling centerfield once again this spring. A 2nd team All-Skyline selection a year ago, led the team in batting average, hits, triples, homeruns and runs batted in a year ago. She will serve as the team’s lead-off hitter this season. Laura Kymer, a senior co-captain will be in right field once again this season. Coming off a season ending injury last season, Dairomy Bolano will be competing to be the starting left fielder this year. Also competing for time in the outfield will be Stephanie Bickel, who started 32 games in left field last season and Megan Dunne, who will also serve as the team’s designated hitter at times throughout the season. This year’s pitching staff will rely on a duo of pitchers to carry the load on the mound. Michelle Hendry led the team in innings, wins, and strikeouts last season and will once again get the bulk of the time this year. Megan Doucette will fill a dual role for the Lady Cyclones this year. As the team’s primary catcher, the senior adds tremendous pop to the lineup, while having the second most homeruns a year ago. A tremendous competitor will also shoulder some of the pitching duties as well. Michelle Henderson will serve as the catcher when Doucette is on the mound. Her knowledge of the game will be a big asset in her calling a good game. The season gets underway for the Lady Cyclones on March 14th versus College of Staten Island. Their spring training trip begins on March 18th and will include four scheduled double-headers. Their quest for a Skyline tournament bid will begin on March 31st against Mount Saint Mary College. |
