![]() PAC Recognizes Three Lady Cyclones on Year End AwardsThe PAC Conference Softball Awards were announced earlier this month and three Lady Cyclone Softball players were recognized on All-Conference Teams. Junior Megan Dunne (Frenchtown/Delaware Valley) was named the First Team All-PAC Conference Designated Hitter, Freshman Heather Rottner (Ridgefield/Ridgefield) was named the Second Team All-PAC Conference Utility player, and Freshman Krystal Brugger (Franklin Lakes/Indian Hills) was the softball team's recipient of the PAC Conference Sportsmanship Award. Dunne was the team's second leading hitter. Led all Lady Cyclones in hits and RBI's, was top five in runs scored, doubles, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage. Megan was named to the PAC weekly Honor Roll once this spring and last spring as a sophomore was named a 2nd-Team All-Skyline Conference player. Rottner had a much better numbers for the year in conference play then out. She finished in the team's top five of RBI's and stolen bases. Heather was a great team-player as stepeped up to play both the outfield and the infiedld when the team was depleated by some injuries. Brugger, the Sportsmanship Award winner, was one of the team's defensive specialists. Playing in seven games she held one of the top fielding percentages on the team at .962. (4/26/08) – The Centenary Lady Cyclones split with the The Neumann Knights split in a double header yesterday on the road, losing the first game 8-0 and winning the second 13-3. In game one pitcher Angela Sebasto struck out eight Lady Cyclones in a row until senior Stephanie Bickel (Brick/Manasquan) singled in the top of the third to end the streak. Neumann took the lead in the fourth scoring four of the eight they would tally over the game. The Knights added one to their total in the fifth and then in the bottom of the sixth a homer three run homer ended the game. Game two the Lady Cyclones got ahead early in the first but their advantage was short lived as the Knights knotted things up in the second half of the inning. A three run homer by senior Lauren Cassoff (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) would open the game up for Centenary in the bottom of the fourth. The Lady Cyclones continued their run, scoring five more in the sixth off of hits by Bickel, Cassoff and Megan Dunne (Frenchtown/Delaware Valley Regional). Cassoff would lead the team in game two with four RBI’s while Dunne recorded three. Bickel, Cassoff and Dunne all recorded three hits for the Lady Cyclones. Also notching hits for the women were Whitney Smith (Pompton Plains/Pequannock), Jolyn Veres (Denville/Morris Knolls) and Heather Rottner (Ridgefield Park/Ridgefield Park). (4/18/08) – On this sunny Friday afternoon the Centenary softball team played host to visiting Immaculata University in a PAC conference clash. The Lady Cyclones were only able to pull off a win in the night cap as they split losing 6-5 in game one and 5-4 in game two. Pitcher Sarah Olsen (Lake Hopatcong/Pope John XXIII) began game one by striking out three in a row but things went downhill for the Lady Cyclones from there. After three scoreless innings, Immaculata got on the board off of a homer by Carol Mastrosante in the top of the fourth. Mastrosante hit her second straight homer in the fifth as the Macs scored five more to take a 6-0 lead. The Lady Cyclones gained some ground, scoring two in the bottom of the sixth but remained behind going into the seventh. A single by Geriann LaGuardia (Edison/J.P. Stevens) and a double by Kate Norris (Lake Hopatcong/Jefferson Twp.) got runners in scoring position for pinch hitter Lauren Cassoff (Manahwakin/Southern Regional) who whacked a ball over the center field fence. Unfortunately the rally was not enough, as the next three batters grounded out to end the game with a score of 6-5. In game two, the Lady Cyclones took an early lead scoring three in the first off of singles by Knapp and Megan Dunne (Frenchtown/Delaware Valley Regional) and two Immaculata errors. The Macs got one back in the second to decrease the women’s advantage to two but Centenary answered back with a run in the bottom of the fourth and another in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 5-1. Immaculata crept back in the game in the final two innings and with runners on second and third the game fell in the hands of pitcher Kristin Duborow (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) who struck out the last two batters to end the game in Centenary’s favor. Durborow ended up with seven strike outs while allowing eight hits throughout the game. Today’s results take the women to 8-17 overall and 3-11 in the PAC while Immaculata moves to 4-16 and 4-12 in conference play. (4/16/08) - The Centenary Softball team was swept in a double header played at Misericordia yesterday afternoon. The women fell 11-3 and 9-0 taking them to 8-16 overall and 2-10 in the PAC while Misericordia moved to 19-9. In the first game the Lady Cyclones tallied 11 hits but could only muster three runs, one in the third and two in the fifth. Misericordia countered Centenary’s scoring in the fifth, scoring five runs of their own to take a 9-3 lead. Misericordia would score two more before the final inning to make the score 11-3. Megan Dunne (Frenchtown/Delaware Valley Regional) led the women with two hits and two RBI’s while Jenna Wendolowski (Jersey City/Holy Family Academy) also recorded two hits and made it home twice. In game two, Centenary was shut out as Misericordia’s Katie Eiden pitched a two hitter. Recording the two hits for the Lady Cyclone were Allison Knapp (Belle Mead/Montgomery) and Jolyn Veres (Denville/Morris Knolls). On the mound for the women, Knapp struck out eight, but allowed 10 hits for the loss. The women are back at home this Friday, April 18th for a game against Immaculata University. The PAC match-up will be played at 3:00pm on Tannery Field. Softball Splits in a Double Header with Marywood
(4/14/08) - This past weekend the Centenary softball team traveled to Scranton, PA to take on Marywood University in a PAC double-header. Both the Lady Cyclones and the Pacers took a victory away from the match-up with Marywood taking the first game 8-3 and Centenary coming up with the 5-2 win in the second. This weekend improved Centenary to 8-14 overall (2-9 PAC) while Marywood moved to 14-14 (4-9 PAC). In game one the Lady Cyclones hung in the game with a one run deficit until the fourth inning where Marywood was able to record three runs. The Pacers followed up in the fifth with two more to take the five run lead that would end the game. Pitching for the Lady Cyclones was Sarah Olsen (Lake Hopatcong/Pope John XXIII) who struck out four and allowed seven hits and six runs in her four innings of action. Junior Jolyn Veres (Denville/Morris Knolls) went 2-4 with two doubles while Heather Rottner was 2-3 with an RBI. The Pacer’s Erika Cook went 3-3 with two doubles, a homer, four RBI and two runs scored in the victory. Game two saw the Pacers take the advantages through the first three innings but the Lady Cyclones knotted things notching runs in the fourth and the sixth. Centenary took the lead in the top of the seventh to cinch the 5-2 victory. Centenary’s Kristin Durborow (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) pitched a three hitter and went all the way for the women, striking out six on the way. For the Cyclones Jenna Wendolowski (Jersey City/Holy Family Academy) went 3-5 and with a triple and Michelle Henderson (Lakewood/Lakewood) recorded a double and an RBI and went 2-4. Marywood’s Mallory Gable took the loss on the mound while striking out five. The Lady Cyclones play again on the road Tuesday, April 15th for a make up game. Centenary Records Two Wins Against USMMA, 1-0 and 8-3
(4/10/08) – This afternoon the Centenary Softball Team played host to visiting United States Merchant Marine Academy, a former Skyline Conference rival. The Lady Cyclones picked up two wins in the double header, beating their opponent 1-0 in game one and 8-3 in game two. These two victories take the Lady Cyclones to 7-13 overall while USMMA drops to 8-17. The Lady Cyclones pulled out a 1-0 victory in game one after five scoreless innings. In the bottom of the sixth, an error by USMMA’s third baseman put Jenna Wendolowski (Jersey City/Holy Family Academy) on base and a double by Lauren Cassoff (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) brought her home for the game’s only run. USMMA got Jess LaValley in scoring position in the top of the seventh but could not bring her home. Lady Cyclone pitcher Sarah Olsen (Lake Hopatcong/Pope John XXIII) struck out five, allowed only four hits and pitched all seven. USMMA’s Karen Taylor also pitched all seven, allowed one less than Olsen and struck three out. In game two, Centenary went on the attack and although USMMA got an advantage in the top of the second, the Lady Cyclones recorded seven runs in the bottom of the second to take an 8-2 lead. Two errors by King’s Point and a single by Whitney Smith (Pompton Plains/Pequannock Twp.) put runners on base for Centenary. A double by Wendolowski and singles by Jolyn Veres (Denville/Morris Knolls) and Allison Knapp (Belle Mead/Montgomery) brought four home for the first runs of the inning. Cassoff walked and then two more Lady Cyclone singles increased the women’s advantage to six. USMMA added another run to their total in the top of the fourth as Cheyanne Loppnow came home off of a sacrifice fly by first baseman Karen Taylor. The score remained unchanged for the remainder of the game. Pitching for the Lady Cyclones was Gerriann LaGuardia (Edison/J.P. Stevens) who went all seven innings and struck out one and allowed five hits while Marjorie Marino allowed eight and struck out four. Centenary now heads to Marywood University Saturday, April 12th for a PAC match-up. The Lady Cyclones will be looking to pick up their second conference win at noon. Lady Cyclones Defeat Mount Saint Mary 4-0 and 16-7(4/10/08) - The Centenary College softball team picked up two victories against former Skyline opponent Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday. This win improved the Lady Cyclones to 5-13 while the Blue Knights dropped to 5-15 overall. Freshman Corrina Becker (Oak Ridge/Jefferson Twp.) went 4-4 recording three singles and a double in the first game while teammate Jolyn Veres (Denville/Morris Knolls) drove in a pair of runs with a double in the top of the second. On the mound for Centenary was pitcher Sarah Olsen (Lake Hopatcong/Pope John XXIII), who went the distance while allowing only seven hits and striking out seven. In game two, the Lady Cyclones tallied 13 hits and sixteen run. Scoring four times for Centenary was Jenna Wendolowski (Jersey City/Hole Family Academy), who finished 2-4. Junior Megan Dunne (Frenchtown/Delaware Valley) ended the game at 3-5 with a run scored and two RBI’s while Veres went 2-5, scoring three runs and notching three RBI’s. Freshman pitcher Kristin Durborow (Manahawkin/ Southern Regional) collected the win for the women, pitching four innings and allowing just two run. Durborow also went 2-3 at bat while scoring twice and recording two RBI’s. For the Blue Knights, Jackie Governale totaled four hits over the two games with two hits in each. In game two she drove in two runs with two doubles. Sophomore Carolyn Hunt and freshman Sarah Johnson both recorded two hits in game one while Hunt also scored in a run in game two. (4/5/08) Earlier today the Centenary Softball team split a PAC Conference doubleheader with Cabrini College, wining the opener 2-0 behind a dominant pitching performance from freshman Sarah Olsen (Lake Hoptacong/Pope John XXIII). The Lady Cyclones fell to the Cavaliers in game two by the final of 4-2. The 1-1 afternoon moves Centenary to 3-13 overall, 1-7 in conference play. Cabrini on the other side moves to 9-12, 6-4 in the PAC. Game one of the day went the way of the Lady Cyclones and pitched Sarah Olsen. Olsen allowed just one hit, which unfortunately for her came with two outs in the seventh inning, spoiling her bid at the no-hitter. She calmly retired the next batter to end the game and the 2-0 victory. Centenary who banged out seven hits in the game, bunched together four straight to start the sixth inning, when Lauren Cassoff (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) opened the frame with a single and was promptly followed by hits from Allison Knapp (Belle Mead/Montgomery), Megan Dunne (Frenchtown/Delaware Valley) and Gerriann La Guardia (Edison/John P Stevens) who drove in Cassoff. Dunne would later score on a Cabrini fielding error to give the hosts the two-run cushion. The win improves Olsen to 1-4 on the season, as she went the distance allowing just the one hit and striking out 12. Cabrini’s Rachel Davis took the loss for the Cavaliers. In game two pitching was again the story, however this game it was the visiting Cavaliers’ Cheri Johns who had the good stuff. Johns allowed just two Centenary hits over seven innings, while giving up just one earned run, and striking out five. The visitor’s jumped in front early pushing across three runs in the top of the first. All three came into score on pair of fielding errors by Centenary, that both came on the same play. Cabrini would cash in on an insurance run in the sixth as Susan Schmidt tripled with two outs and was immediately drove in on an RBI single by Mary Kate Smith. The Lady Cyclones made their attempt at a comeback in the bottom of the sixth when the first two For the afternoon Centenary was led by Cassoff who was a combined 3-for-6 with a run scored and two RBI’s. Teammate Jenna Wendolowski (Jersey City/Holy Family) went 2-for-6 with a run scored. The Cavaliers’ Kristie Sandefur and Mary Kate Smith each tallied a pair of hits, while Smith added an RBI. Cassoff Record's 100th Hit in Centenary's Loss to FDU-Florham
(4/2/08) – This afternoon, April 2nd, the Centenary Softball Team played host to FDU- Florham in a non-conference match-up on Tannery Field. Senior Lauren Cassoff (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) recorded her 100th career hit for the Lady Cyclones as they fell 6-5 and 7-4 in the double header. Despite carrying the lead for the majority of game one, the Lady Cyclones fell as FDU scored four in the seventh inning. Cassoff’s 99th and 100th hit came off a homer in the bottom of the fourth and single to center field in the fifth. The Lady Cyclones recorded three more runs in the next two innings to take a 4-2 lead going into the seventh. The pitching troubles that plagued the women in the last inning would eventually cost them the game as five straight walks and an error allowed the Devils to gain the advantage. A run in the bottom of the seventh closed the Lady Cyclones within one but they were unable to pull out the last run they needed to send the game to extra innings as the final score remained 6-5. Game two began with Centenary taking a 1-0 lead after Jolyn Veres (Denville/Morris Knolls) singled and Cassoff’s base hit brought her home. The Devils answered with two runs of their own in the third and then three in the second to increase their advantage to four. The Lady Cyclones closed the gap by two in the bottom of the fifth but left two stranded on base. With bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Centenary’s defense found a way to get out of the inning with FDU scoring only one run. Unfortunately, the one run the Lady Cylones scored in the seventh was not enough to come back, as the game ended 7-4. Cassoff went 6 for eight in the two games and led the women in hits. Both she and Jenna Wendolowski (Jersey City/Holy Family Academy) tallied two RBI’s for the Centenary. For the Devils, Julie Hartnett and Christine Heyl both notched three hits apiece while Hartnett also recorded four RBI’s in game two alone. The Lady Cyclones record now stands at 2-12 as FDU improved to 14-2. The women are back at home again this weekend to take on PAC rival Cabrini College. The double-header will be played on Tannery Field at 1:00pm. Softball Downed 4-0 and 5-1 by Cedar Crest in Saturday Double-Header(3/30/08) - This past Saturday the Centenary softball team fell to Cedar Crest College in two games. These defeats take the women to 2-8 overall and 0-4 in PAC play. Allison Knapp (Belle Mead/Montgomery) recorded the lone RBI in the games for the Lady Cyclones. The first game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Cedar Crest took the lead 2-0. The Falcons added to their total in the fifth to make the final score 4-0. Knapp pitched five innings and struck out seven for the Lady Cyclones while Lauren Cassoff (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) led the team with two hits. The second game saw much of the same for Centenary as they again fell by four runs despite taking a 1-0 lead early on. A hit by Jenna Wendolowski (Jersey City/Holy Family Academy) got her on base and a single by Knapp brought her home for the women’s sole run of the day. A Cedar Crest homer by Tasha Breiner ended Centenary’s short lived advantage, and by the end of the second the women were down by three with a score of 4-1. Cedar Crest would score one more in the bottom of the third to finish the game with a score of 5-1. The softball team is back in action Wednesday, April 2nd as they take on FDU-Florham at home on Tannery Field. Gametime is 3:30pm. Lady Cyclones Topped by Eastern 8-2 and 12-3
(3/28/08) – The Centenary Softball Team matched up in a double header against Eastern University today on Tannery Field for their home opener. Despite scoring first in both games, the women eventually succumbed to their opponent in both games, losing 8-2 and 12-3. The first game remained scoreless throughout the first two innings. In the bottom of the third Lauren Cassoff (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) hit a bomb over the fence, scoring Jolyn Veres (Denville/Morris Knolls), who had reached first on an error by Eastern’s short stop. The Eagles retaliated in the top of the fourth after an error two walks and a single loaded the bases. A double by Val Heffline brought in three runs and then she was hit home by Carly Rawlings as the inning ended with Eastern now up by four. Centenary struggled at the plate for the next three innings putting only one on base in the fourth and fifth and going three and out in the sixth while Eastern added another run to their total in the fifth. The seventh inning saw Eastern notch three more runs and the Lady Cyclones fall short as the game ended 8-2. The Lady Cyclones again jumped out to an early lead over the Eagles, this time in the first inning as base hits by Megan Dunne (Frenchtown/Delaware Valley Regional) and Katelyn Norris (Lake Hopatcong/Jefferson Twp.) brought home Jenna Wendolowski (Jersey City/Holy Family Academy) and Veres. The inning ended with Corinna Becker (Oak Ridge/Jefferson Twp.) grounding out to second, leaving three stranded. Centenary’s lead did not last long as the Eagles took control of the game, scoring eight runs over the next three innings, including a homer by Amy Bellows at the bottom of the second which gave Eastern a 3-2 advantage. In the bottom of the fourth a base hit and RBI by Allison Knapp (Belle Mead/Montgomery)was the last run of the game for the women but Eastern would put four more runs on the board to end the game 12-3. Cassoff’s homer and two RBI’s led the team while Dunne recorded two hits for the day. For Eastern, Alissa Brubaker recorded five hits over the two games while Bellows had four RBI’s in the second game alone. This loss takes the Lady Cyclones to 0-4 in the PAC Conference and 2-8 overall as Eastern improves to 9-10 and 4-3 in the PAC. Centenary is on the road again tomorrow for their next conference game against Cedar Crest College. Game time is 1:00pm. Softball Falls in Season Opening Double Header(3/16/08) Friday afternoon the Centenary softball team traveled down to Gwynedd Valley, PA to take on Gwynedd Mercy College in their season opener. This game marked not only the Lady Cyclones first game of the season, but The Griffin’s were also the women’s first PAC opponent of the year. The Lady Cyclones were swept in the double header 8-2 in the first game and 7-0 in the second. PAC Coaches Select Misericordia as Pre-Season Softball Favorite(2/27/08) Misericordia University’s softball team has been selected as the pre-season favorite in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) coaches’ poll. The defending conference champion Cougars received eight of the eleven possible first place votes for a total of 118 points, edging past Neumann College. “It is an honor to be selected by the PAC Coaches,” said Misericordia head coach Charlotte Slocum. “The PAC has developed into a very competitive league and we’re very proud of our accomplishments. We hope to live up to the expectations and continue our winning tradition.” Under Coach Slocum, the Cougars have made 12 consecutive championship game appearances. Neumann College earned a total of 108 points, including three first-place votes, to finish in second place in the poll. Cabrini College (99) finished third, with Alvernia College (81) and Eastern University (77) finishing fourth and fifth respectively. Marywood University (65), Gwynedd-Mercy College (53), Centenary College (47), Cedar Crest College (44), Immaculata University (32) and Rosemont College (11) rounded out the voting. The 2008 PAC Championship begins first round play on Wednesday, April 30, 2008. The PAC Championship is set for Sunday, May 4th. Three Softball Players Named All-Conference
(5/11/07) The Skyline Athletic Conference released all of its Conference All-Star teams last week, and the Cyclones of Centenary were well represented. Each of Centenary’s four spring sports had at least one player named to either the first, second, or honorable mention teams in every sport. The Lady Cyclones softball program placed three of its players on the All-Conference Teams. Junior Jessa Jones (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) and sophomore Jenna Wendolowski (Jersey City/Holy Family Academy) were both First Team selections. Sophomore Megan Dunne (Frenchtown/Delaware Valley) was also recoginzed and made the Conference's Second Team. Jones, a two-time Skyline Conference All-Star, finished the season with a .311 average. She was tied for the team lead in hits (23), led in runs scored (20), and drove in 11. Wendolowski started and played in all 23 games, batted a consistent .269 on the year, and was second in runs scored with 19. Dunne, a tranfer playing her first season with the Lady Cyclones, led the team in hitting at .365. She was tied for the team lead in hits (23), finished second in slugging % at .587, and totled three homeruns. |
