![]() Becerra and Hill Named Metro Region All-Stars
(12/4/06) Last week the 2006 NSCAA/Adidas Division III Men’s Soccer All-Region teams were announced. Centenary College’s Nelson Becerra (Paterson/St. Benedict’s) and Chris Hill (Flanders/Gill St. Bernard’s) were both selected as members of the 2nd and 3rd Teams respectively of the NSCAA’s Metro Region. Becerra’s selection the 2nd Team All-Metro Region list was the most recent of numerous accolades the Cyclone freshman, midfielder has received in this his first collegiate season. He finished the year tied for team lead in total points with 29, while leading the team in assists with nine. He was voted to the Skyline Conference 1st Team of All-Stars as well as the Conference’s Rookie of the Year.
Hill’s season total were not far off of his teammates, as he finished 2006 with the same number of points, 29, including the team lead in goals scored with 12. His selection to the All-Metro Region 3rd Team also adds to a list of awards which includes a 1st Team All-Skyline Conference selection and a one-time ECAC Metro Region Player of the Week award. Centenary Head Coach Keith O’Connor when asked about both players contributions this season said, “both players were tremendous additions to our program and are key factors towards the growth of the program”.
Cyclone Men Drop ECAC Quarter Final 2-0 to NJCU(11/8/06) Earlier today the Centenary College Men’s Soccer season came to an end with a 2-0 loss to NJCU (New Jersey City University) in the quarter final round of this year’s ECAC Metro Region Soccer Tournament. In a game which was moved from the NJCU campus to Alumni Field in Newark, NJ due to the chance of inclement weather, the entire match was played in near torrential rain. Despite the conditions and the opening ten minutes it took both sides to adjust to the field conditions, each team had their chances to win the contest. The Gothic Knights of NJCU struck first, in the 13th minute when junior Scott Modzelewski (Monroe /Monroe Twp) converted off a corner kick from Omar Ali (Bayonne/Bayonne) for the one up lead. The Cyclones came back just a few minutes later and nearly tied the score, but Chris Hill’s scoring attempt crept just wide of the sloppy goal mouth and NJCU remained in front 1-0 through the halftime break. The second half was more of the same opportunities at both ends; however both sides were letting them slip. The Knights’ Frank Rosenthal (Kearny/Kearny) gave the hosts the two-goal cushion they were looking for in the 67th minute when he scored an unassisted beating Centenary’s Damien DiBuono. Centenary was unable to get on the board over the final 20-plus minutes, as Bruce Neves (Newark/Hudson Catholic) made eight saves in route to the shut out. DiBuono (Succasunna/Morris Catholic) made four saves in the loss, as the Cyclones complete the year with an overall record of 11-10. BOXSCORE Centenary Falls Short in Conference Semi-Final(11/1/06) In today’s Skyline Conference semifinal the Centenary Men’s Soccer team was defeated by USMMA by the score of 3-0. The loss drops the Cyclones to 11-9 on the season, however the Men are still optimistic to receive a bid to the ECAC Metro Region Tournament which gets underway next week. Selections for the ECAC’s will be awarded following the NCAA selection show this Sunday evening. The host Mariners of USMMA struck early in today’s contest as David Poulnot netted a shot off an assist from Patrick Boyle just 0:50 after kick off. The lead remained 1-0 until the 37th minute when USMMA’s Taylor Pankratz scored off a pass from Clint Foster pushing the deficit to two. In the opening half Centenary goalkeeper Damien DiBuono (Succasunna/Morris Catholic) made four saves helping keep the Cyclones within striking distance. Unfortunately for the Centenary the second half did not bring any changes on the offensive side. They were able to create two scoring opportunities, of which one was saved by Merchant Marine Academy goalie Joseph Halverson. USMMA recorded the third ad final tally of the contest when Neal Duncan scored on a corner kick from David Poulnot, giving him an assist to go along with his game winning goal. The win improves USMMA to 14-3-1 and puts them into the Skyline Conference Championship game on Saturday afternoon versus the Stevens/Farmingdale State game winner. (10/30/06) Earlier today the Centenary Men’s Soccer earned their first ever qualification into the Skyline Conference playoffs with a 3-2 victory over Old Westbury. The win gives the Cyclones the #3 seed in this week’s conference playoffs, a spot that no Men’s Soccer team has achieved since joining the Skyline four years ago. Centenary wasted no time getting out the gates. In just the 2nd minute of play freshman Nelson Becerra (Paterson/St. Benedict’s) found the foot of Kissinger Barreau (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) to lift the home 1-0. Despite out shooting the visitor’s 8-1 in the opening half the score remained 1-0 into the halftime break. Once again right off the start of the second half, Barreau record his second goal of the game, this time coming on an assist from Josh Spivack (Budd Lake/Mount Olive). Later in the 66th minute the Panthers cut the lead in half, when Felipe Cavalcanti (Valatie, NY/Crane) scored off a deflection from the Centenary goalie. The home team was not done however, as less than ten minutes later freshman Chris Guadagno (West Milford/West Milford) connected on a header from Becerra marking his second assist of the afternoon. Despite the two goal deficit, Old Westbury refused to give up as they again pulled to within 3-2 when John Senatore (Ridge, NY/Longwood) scored on an assist played through by Shawn Holland (Massapequa, NY/St. Anthony’s).
Along with the victory pushing the Cyclones into the playoffs, it was also a nice way to honor the team’s four seniors who all played substantial roles in the outcome. Kissinger Barreau finished with two goals, goalkeeper Donnie Iudica (Dingman’s Ferry, PA/St. Mary’s (NY) notched the victory in net, and defenders Manny Nieves (Hammonton/Hammonton) and Brian Engisch (Frenchtown/Delaware Valley) each played tremendously in the backfield. Centenary will take on the United State Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday in the Skyline Conference semi-final, up in King’s Point , NY. The time of this game has not been decided. BOXSCORE
Stevens Clip Cyclones 1-0.(10/25/06) Earlier this afternoon in a very entertaining contest Stevens Institute of Technology edged the host Cyclones of Centenary College in their Men’s Soccer game 1-0. The lone goal came off the foot of Stevens’ Todd Sheridan (Galloway, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) in the 82nd minute when he was played the ball from Nick Gkionis (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial). The entire game was played very evenly at both ends of the field with each goalkeeper playing terrifically. Centenary’s Damien DiBuono (Succasunna/Morris Catholic) made five saves in the loss, as Stevens’ Chris Celentano (Newton, NJ/Newton) made four to preserve the shut-out. The visiting Ducks did outshoot the Cyclones 13-11, along with holding a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. The win improves Stevens to 14-0-2, 8-0 in the Skyline while Centenary drops to 10-8, 5-3. Both teams could meet again next week in the opening round of the Skyline Playoffs, which is all dependent upon Centenary’s result versus Old Westbury Saturday afternoon. (10/19/06) Earlier this week Centenary sophomore Chris Hill (Flanders / Gill St. Bernard’s) was named the Skyline Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week and the ECAC Metro Region Player of the Week. In the team’s four games last week, Hill recorded 18 points on eight goals and two assists helping the Cyclones to a perfect 4-0 week. He scored at least one goal in every game, including four in a 5-1 victory over Maritime College. In addition to his four goals, Hill also added an assist giving him nine total points for the afternoon, which set a new Centenary College record for points in a game. Chris’ selection as both the Skyline Conference and ECAC Metro Region’s Player of the Week, is the first time this fall that any Centenary athlete as received both awards for the same week of action. Cyclones Extend Winning Streak to Four with 2-0 Shutout(10/15/06) The Centenary Men’s Soccer team prevailed earlier today 2-0 over Farmingdale State for their second victory in as many days. The victory pushed the team’s winning streak to four straight, heading into a week of two consecutive road games. The host Cyclones again took full advantage of early pressure, putting the visiting Rams on their heels early. Centenary’s Kissinger Barreau (Manahawakin/Southern Regional) netted his third goal of the season just over nine minutes into the game. The opportunity came off of a save made by Farmingdale’s goalkeeper, who was able to stop the first shot from Centenary’s Chris Hill. Later in the half Hill (Flanders/Gill St. Bernard’s), who was the Cyclones top performer in yesterday’s victory, recorded his fifth goal in two days off an assist from Patrick Trivino (Lyndhurst/St. Mary’s). The home team carried there enthusiastic play into the half, leading Farmingdale 2-0. In the second forty-five minutes, neither side was able to break through for a goal due to outstanding play from each goalkeeper. Farmingdale’s Joseph Caccavale (West Islip, NY/West Islip) was tested six times in the half, while Centenary’s Damien DiBuono (Succasunna/Morris Catholic) held off four attempts. The 2-0 victory marks DiBuono’s third shutout of the season. The win improves Centenary to 9-6 overall, 4-1 in the conference as well as into the fourth spot in the Skyline standings which is currently good enough for the Conference Tournament. (10/14/06) In the second game of today’s soccer doubleheader at Centenary, the Cyclones Men’s Soccer team improved to 8-6 overall, 3-1 in the Skyline Conference, thanks impart to four goals and a total of nine points by sophomore Chris Hill (Flanders/Gill St. Bernard’s). Hill’s nine points sets the record for most points scored in a game in Men’s Soccer history at Centenary, while the four goals ties the record for goals scored in a game. The host Cyclones opened the scoring early as Hill connected on his first goal just 13:30 into play, on an assist from Patrick Trivino (Lyndhurst/St. Mary’s). As the half continued, Centenary was able to keep constant pressure on the Maritime back-line and goalkeeper. In the 33rd minute Hill again found the back of the net, this time on the assist from Nelson Becerra (Paterson/St. Benedict’s). Despite out shooting the visiting Privateers 13-3 in the half, Centenary held just the two goal advantage into the break. The second half was again Chris Hill’s time to shine as in the 56th minute he nailed the hat trick, scoring off a pass from Kissinger Barreau (Manahawkin/Southern Regional). Less than two minutes later Hill returned the favor as he fed Barreau for Centenary’s fourth goal of the afternoon. The lone goal for the visitor’s came in the 70th minute when back-up goalkeeper Andy Roth (Huntington, NY/Huntington) found Mahmet Alkan (Turkey/Ozel Central) on a 70-yard kick and Alkan chipped the ball into the back of the net. Centenary’s Chris Hill capped off his outstanding performance with a fourth score in the closing minutes, when Chris Guadagno (West Milford/West Milford) played through to him for his final tally, giving Hill nine points for the game. The win gives the Cyclones there first three game winning streak of the season and pushes them into fifth place in the Skyline Conference standings. (10/4/06) Earlier today the Centenary Men’s Soccer team won their second conference game of the season, downing Mount Saint Mary College 4-1. The host Cyclones opened the scoring on a goal by freshman standout Nelson Becerra (Paterson/St. Benedict’s) in the 22nd minute. Becerra created a turnover in the Mount Saint Mary end of the filed and completed the play in the bottom corner of the net. The visiting Blue Knights were not down for long however, just 0:47 seconds later they were awarded a penalty kick off of a Centenary foul within the 18-yard box. Andy Espinoza (Mount Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) evened the game at 1-1 with the goal. Off of the restart, Centenary pushed the ball down the field and was awarded a penalty kick of their own, as Mount Saint Mary was called for a hand-ball in the penalty area. Becerra netted his and the Cyclones second goal of the afternoon, pushing them back in front again. Then just before the halftime break, Centenary gave themselves a two goal cushion. Senior Brian Engisch (Frenchtown/Delaware Valley) scored on a header when Ryan Bilello (West Hempstead, NY/West Hempstead) found him on a 25-yard throw in. The game remained a two goal deficit until the 68th minute, when Nelson Becerra recorded his first hat trick of his career. Becerra’s third tally came off the left foot following an attempted clear by Mount Saint Mary from a Centenary corner. With the goals in today’s game, Becerra extended his streak to eight consecutive games of scoring at least one-point. The victory today pushes Centenary above .500 in the conference standings for the first time all season. They now stand at 5-5 overall, and 2-1 in the Skyline. The loss for Mount Saint Mary drops them to 5-5 overall, 0-3 in conference play. The Knights goalkeeper Paul Aries (Nashua, NH/Suffield Academy) made eight saves in the loss. (9/26/06) Centenary freshman Nelson Becerra (Paterson/St. Benedict's) was named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week for Men's Soccer on Monday. Becerra was chosen for his outstanding play in Centenary's 2-1 victory over Manhattanville College back on Sept. 20th. He totaled three points which included an assist and the game winning goal on a penalty kick, propelling the Cyclones to their first Skyline Conference win of the season.
Cyclones even Skyline Record with 2-1 Victory(9/20/06) The Cyclone Men’s Soccer team evened their Skyline Conference record earlier this afternoon when they held off a late charge by Manhattanville College to record the 2-1 victory. Centenary jumped on the board first in the 23rd minute of play when senior Kissinger Barreau (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) took a through ball off the foot of Nelson Becerra (Paterson / St. Benedict’s) and slid it into the bottom corner of the net. The game continued to at a very fast pace, as both teams attempted to play up and down the field. However, neither side was able to tally another score until Centenary was awarded a penalty kick, in the 76th minute, on a hand-ball violation by the Valiants. The Cyclone’s Becerra promptly placed the ball in the back of the net for the two-goal advantage. Manhattanville then turned to the aggressor and forced Centenary to play under constant pressure for the final stage of the contest. One solid forward run did finally pay off for the Valiants, as with just under seven minutes remaining, Emmanuel Bondzie (Etobicoke, ON) headed a pass from Ricky Broderson (Auckland, New Zealand) past Centenary goalkeeper Damien DiBuono to pull the visitor’s within one-goal. Unfortunately for Manhattanville that would be as close as they could get. Centenary’s Di Buono (Succasunna/Morris Catholic) recorded his third victory of the season making five saves in the process, while Nelson Becerra finished the game with a goal and one assist. (9/14/06) The Centenary Men’s Soccer team took care of business earlier today versus visiting Yeshiva University. The Cyclones eased to an 11-0 non conference victory, improving themselves to 2-3 on the season. The host’s played for 12 minutes before scoring a goal, but from there it was pretty much a continuing event. Freshman Chris Guadagno (West Milford/West Milford) took a cross from Chris Hill (Flanders/Mt. Olive) and headed the ball to the back of the net, giving the Cyclones a 1-0 advantage. Over the next eight minutes Centenary capitalized on four more scoring chances and led 5-0 just half way through the opening half. Freshman Damien Gallegos (Rutherford / Queen of Peace) scored on an assist from Nelson Becerra (Paterson/St. Benedict’s) in the closing minutes of the half, for the 6-0 halftime lead.
The second half brought much of the same dominating play from the Centenary squad, as they again finalized numerous chances, scoring six more times in the second half. The Centenary offense ended the day with 11 goals, four assists, and a total of 39 shots. Sophomore reserve Pat Glackin (Whitehouse Station / Immaculata) recorded eight points with four goals scored. Chris Guadagno finished with three goals and an assist while Chris Hill tallied a goal and two assists. Freshman goalkeeper Damien Du Buono (Succasunna/Morris Catholic) recorded his first career collegiate shut-out making five saves in 70-minutes of play. BOXSCORE
Centenary Men fall 4-1 to Visiting Griffins(9/9/06) The men’s team faced Gwynedd Mercy College for their home opener at Cyclone field. Although they were looking to get back to a .500 record in their fourth game of the season, they were overcome by the Griffins 4-1. The cyclones struck first off an unassisted free kick from Nelson Becerra (Paterson/St. Benedict’s) in the 31st minute of the game. The shot came from outside the 18-yard box and was a rocket to the upper right corner. The Griffins retaliated right away with a goal in the 32nd minute from Pat Smith (Philadelphia, PA/North Catholic) off of a cross from Walt Mikolajewski (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic). Gwynedd Mercy attacked again in the 43rd minute off a flick to the far post and a goal by George Lane (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic). The assault continued with two goals in the 59th minute and the 67th minute, the first scored by Tim Mumford (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) off a cross from the corner, and the second scored by Mike Walczak (Levittown, PA/Truman) from a corner kick. Centenary’s keeper, Damien Di Buono (Succasunna/Morris Catholic) came up with seven saves in the match. Centenary’s record for the year is 1-3. Their next match is home on Thursday, September 14th against Yeshiva University. BOXSCORE
Men Notch First Victory of Season(9/7/06) The Centenary Men’s Soccer team recorded their first victory of the season, on the road at Hunter College on Thursday afternoon. The non-conference win improves the Cyclones to 1-2 on the season. Centenary notched their first goal late in the first half, off the foot of sophomore Josh Spivack. Despite out shooting the host Hawks’ 8-6 in the first half, Centenary held the slim 1-0 margin heading into halftime. The Cyclones extended the deficit to 2-0, in the 62nd minute when freshman Nelson Becerra scored on an assist from Spivack. Over the next 15 minutes the home team got back in the game netting two straight goals to tie the game 2-2, and put the pressure back on the Cyclones. The visitor’s were up to the challenge as freshman Chris Guadagno and the Cyclones responded in the 77th minute with the game wining goal. Cyclone goalkeeper Damien DiBuono tallied six saves for his first collegiate victory. 2006 Men's Soccer OutlookThere will be plenty of new faces on the 2006 Centenary College men’s soccer team. There are 9 players, including four transfer student-athletes, that will be joining a squad that went 5-12-1 last season.
