Cyclones End Season With 2-0 Loss In Playoffs

IMMACULATA, Pa. (November 3, 2009) The men’s soccer team closed out their season falling to Immaculata University in the first round of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) playoffs last night. The Mighty Macs scored two goals in the first half that the Cyclones could not match as the final score was a 2-0 result in favor of IU. Immaculata now moves on to the play the No. two seeded Neumann University. The loss marks the end of the season for Centenary, which finished with a 6-10-2 record.

On a cold and crisp night Immaculata took an early lead when Daniel Arteglier was able to find the ball on his foot in the box and send a shot past Cyclones keeper Jason Rogers (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) to put his team up 1-0. Centenary, looking for an answer, thought it may have found one when senior Chris Guadagno (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) was able to get free near the top of the box but his left footed shot was just wide of the goal. Again the Cyclones had another chance, this time it was Andrew Pinnella (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) who was able to turn the corner near the end line but his shot was just close enough for Immaculata’s keeper Stone Gahagan to grab and keep Centenary off the board.

Immaculata continued to lead by a goal until just before the close of the first half when Michael Nesci sent a long ball in to teammate Kameron Teel, the pass took a favorable bounce for Teel and he was able to lift the ball over the hands of Rogers to give Immaculata a 2-0 lead. Into the second half, Centenary did all it could to amount chances but was unable to put anything together. The Mighty Macs held on in the final 45 and won the game, 2-0.

Cyclones Clinch Playoffs With 2-1 Win

Alex Asorea's fourth goal of the season gave the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.

ROSEMONT, Pa. (October 31, 2009) Needing a win and three points to reach the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) playoffs the Centenary men’s soccer team was able to do just that as they held off Rosemont College and came away with a 2-1 win. The win gave the Cyclones a regular season record of 6-9-2 and 3-4-2 in the conference. The loss for the Ravens bumped them out of the playoffs and lowered their record to 6-9 and 3-6 CSAC.

A day after playing 120 minutes of soccer in a 1-1 tie with Gwynedd-Mercy, the Cyclones took to the pitch again in their most important game of the season. Freshman Alex Asoera (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) helped take a lot of pressure off as he got Centenary on the board in the first half when he finished off a pass from Matt Winkler (Great Meadows, N.J./Hackettstown) to make the score 1-0. Things only got better from there as just six minutes later sophomore Andrew Pinnella (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) scored off a set piece and put Centenary ahead 2-0, a lead they took to halftime.

As the second half began Centenary found itself needing just 45 minutes of good soccer to punch their ticket to the playoffs. Rosemont, however, would not go quietly. They pulled to within one goal when in the 58th minute Patrick McElroy knocked in a deflection as the score became 2-1. The Cyclones decided enough was enough from there as their defense and goalie Jason Rogers (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) tightened up and did not allow another goal, giving us the final score of 2-1 and putting Centenary into the CSAC playoffs. Rogers capped off a brilliant day in goal with 12 saves.

The Cyclones are going to be the sixth seed in the CSAC playoffs, drawing No. 3 Immaculata University. The game is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3 at 7:00pm. The Mighty Macs defeated Centenary earlier this season 2-1. A full playoff preview coming Monday.

Cyclones Battle to a 1-1 Tie With Gwynedd-Mercy

Jason Rogers made nine saves in the 1-1 tie with Gwynedd-Mercy.

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (October 30, 2009) The men’s soccer team played a hotly contested Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) game today against Gwynedd-Mercy College and 120 minutes of soccer was not enough to declare a winner. After the Cyclones got on the board first in the opening half, Gwynedd-Mercy was able to tie it in the second. In two overtime periods neither team could convert a goal and the game remained tied, 1-1. The tie for the Cyclones moves them to 5-9-2 overall and 2-4-2 in the conference while the Griffins move to 7-8-3 and 4-4-3 in conference.

Andrew Pinnella (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) was able to get a hold of a ball bouncing in the box and calmly shoot it into the corner of the net to give the Cyclones the lead in the 24th minute. Centenary kept this lead for the majority of the game until the 77th minute when Joe Moses served a hard cross into the box which Matthew Meier finished to tie the game at one goal each. In the overtime periods, both teams were able to mount chances yet neither could find the winner.

The Cyclones have a quick turnaround as they are back in action again tomorrow, October 31 at Rosemont College. The Cyclones are looking to put a “scare” into the Ravens on this Halloween game as a win will put Centenary into the playoffs.

Cyclones Send Seniors Out on Top With 3-0 Win

Andrew Eitel had a memorable senior day recording the game winning assist.

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (October 24, 2009) – Earlier today the men’s soccer team sent their seniors out on top with a convincing 3-0 win over Colonial States Athletic Conference foe Keystone College. Facing some weather difficulties and a muddy field, the Cyclones were able to convert the puddles to goals.

In the first half the Cyclones were able to get on the board first in the early going when a ball sent into the mixer by senior Andrew Eitel (Byram, N.J./Morris Catholic) was found by Andrew Pinnella (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) who knocked his shot off a defender to give Centenary the 1-0 lead. This was Pinnella’s second goal in two games. Jason Rogers (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) made five saves in the first half.

The second half with the Cyclones holding a one goal lead and the next being a crucial one, Centenary was able to lengthen its lead with a borderline offensive clinic. Senior Chris Guadagno (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) was able to beat his man along the sideline and sent a perfect ground ball pass to a streaking Edgar Escobar-Castro (Lawrence, N.J./Lawrence) who finished to give

Centenary a 2-0 lead. Fifteen minutes later, Guadagno got on the board again when he was found on a slotted ball Alex Khouri (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty High) and was able to beat the goalie with a far post shot giving the Cyclones the 3-0 victory. Guadagno finished the day with a goal and an assist for three points.

The men will be back in conference action on Tuesday, October 27 as they travel to Rosemont to take on the Ravens.

Grant Scores Late Goal To Force Overtime and Tie for Cyclones

Andrew Pinnella got the Cyclones on the board first with his second goal of the season.

CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. (October 21, 2009) – Earlier today in a hotly contested Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) match the Cyclones found themselves trailing the Baptist Bible College Defenders by a goal with less than a minute to play. In desperate need of a score, Centenary’s Derrick Grant (Tranquility, N.J./Pope John XXIII) found himself in the perfect spot to rebound a shot by Dan Charkowski (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and score the game’s tying goal to force overtime. In the extra time, both teams battled, but neither could get the winner and the game ended in a tie, 2-2. For the Cyclones, this brought their record to 4-9-1 and 1-4-1 in the CSAC while the Defenders went to 5-10-2 and 1-3-2 in the CSAC.

Centenary got on the board first in this game, as Andrew Pinnella (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) this was in a good position to clean up a rebound and knock home his second goal of the season, giving Centenary a 1-0 lead. BBC was quick to answer and did so when Ben Clark was able to score an unassisted goal to tie the game at one goal apiece.

The game stayed knotted at one until the last five minutes of the half. In the 86th minute, Clark took a pass from teammate Josiah Mantz and found himself one on one with Centenary’s goalie Jason Rogers (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) and was able to beat him for his second goal of the afternoon, giving BBC the 2-1 lead with just over four minutes to play. In the 88th minute, Centenary was looking for some sort of spark and subbed freshman forward Derrick Grant into the game. Just two minutes after entering the game and with his team on the verge of a loss, Grant was able to score his second goal of the season and force overtime.

In the overtime periods, neither team was able to generate much in terms of offense, but in the final ten minute half, Rogers made two saves for the Cyclones to keep the game tied at 2-2. The Cyclones recorded one shot in the overtime period.

Next up for Centenary is a home contest against conference foe Keystone College. The Cyclones and the Giants are separated by one point in the CSAC standings.

Tough Breaks Cost Cyclones Two Goals, Game

Jason Rogers' made six saves in the Cyclones 2-1 loss at Immaculata.

IMMACULATA, Pa. (October 13, 2009) – Earlier today in a highly contested Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) game the men’s soccer got the early lead but ultimately fell to Immaculata University Mighty Macs. The Cyclones’ defense did a good job keeping Immaculata’s offense at bay, yet they became victim of two unfortunate whistles which resulted in two penalty kicks and both of Immaculata’s goals in the 2-1 loss.

Centenary got on the board first in the opening half when in the 25th minute, Immaulata’s goal-keeper came out of the net and allowed Alex Walters (Sciota, Pa./Pleasant Valley) to shoot  into an empty net and give his Cyclones a 1-0 lead that they would take into halftime with them.

In the second half, Centenary clinging to a one goal lead, fouled the Mighty Macs in the box and a penalty kick ensued which Alan Lorentz of Immaculata was able to convert and tie the game at one. Then just four minutes later, on a long throw in sent into the box by Immaculata, Centenary caused some contact which was deemed a foul and thus another penalty kick was given to IU.
Lorentz happily obliged to take and make his second goal in five minutes and the games’ winning goal.

The Mighty Macs are now 4-6-3 and 2-2 (CSAC) with the win, while the Cyclones fall to 4-9 and 1-4 (CSAC) on the loss. Centenary’s goal keeper Jason Rogers (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) was again strong in defeat, making six saves on the day. Walters’ goal was his first of the season. Next up for Centenary will be a home match versus the Gwynedd-Mercy College Griffins on October 17.
