(2/5/08)  In the last few weeks the Centenary Men’s and Women’s Soccer programs have been recognized by both the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) and by d3kicks.

On the Men’s side, a pair of Cyclones were named to the 3rd Team of the NSCAA’s Metro Region.  First time member Andrew Clifton (Flanders/Gill St. Bernard’s) and Chris Hill (Flanders/Gill St. Bernard’s), a two-time selection, were both named by the committee for their accomplishments this season.  For their same performances, Clifton and Hill were also named to the 3rd Team Metro Region by the D3kicks All-Region Committee.  Joining them on the 3rd Team was a third Centenary player, Chris Guadgano (West Milford/West Milford).  The final trio of Centenary Men receiving a post-season award were Chris Hill, Josh Spivack (Budd Lake/Mount Olive) and Brian Esposito (Washington/Warren Hills).  These three were named to the NSCAA’s All-East Region Scholar Team for their success in the classroom.  Each individual finished the semester with GPA’s above 3.5.  Hill (3.68) was a 2nd-Team recipient, while Spivack (3.66) and Esposito (3.78) were both 3rd-Team members.

Cyclones Drop Conference Match-up 4-1

Chris Guadagno

(10/17/07)  Earlier today in a game with playoff implications, the Centenary Cyclones squared off against the Neumann Knights in a PAC Men’s Soccer match-up.  The visiting Knights proved to hold the edge today as they downed the Cyclones 4-1 to improve to 7-5-3 overall, 3-2-1 in the conference.  The loss drops Centenary to 6-9-1, 1-5 in the PAC.

The visitor’s started things off early when Jesse Urquhart found freshman Zach Sell in just the 3rd minute of the match.  Following the early goal, Neumann kept control of the game while gaining momentum.  Sell struck again in the 38th minute, on another assist from Urquhart to put the Knight’s in front 2-0.  Then in the 43rd minute the duo teamed up a third time, as Sell recorded the hat trick, scoring his and the team’s third goal of the game.  The Cyclones were unable to break the crease and trailed 3-0 at the halftime break.

The Cyclones’ returned the favor, striking first in the second half when junior Chris Hill Flanders/Gill St. Bernard’s) connected on a free kick, which beat the Neumann goalie top-corner.  Unfortunately for the Cyclones that was extent of their scoring for the afternoon.  The Knights added a fourth score in the 82nd minute with a penalty kick from sophomore Kenneth Baa-Adomako, and took the victory for their second road win of the year.  Boxscore

Men Fall to Cabrini 2-0

Damien DiBuono

(10/13/07) This afternoon on Cyclone Field the Centenary men’s and women’s soccer teams both took on Pennsylvania Athletic Conference rivals Cabrini College.  The women’s team played first and came away victorious by a score of 3-1.  The men were not able to the result they wanted in the second match however, falling 2-0.  The men were looking to get back to .500 in this game but despite playing evenly with their opponent and earning more corner kicks than the Cavaliers, they could not capitalize.  Cabrini scored two goals relatively early in the game and the Cyclones were unable to make up the deficit.

In the 11th minute of play Cabrini’s Andrew Jacobs found the back of the net off of a throw in by Joe Blaney to go ahead of the Cyclones 1-0.  Only five minutes later the Cavaliers scored again off of a shot by Brian Moran who was assisted by Mike McDevitt. Both Chris Hill (Flanders/Gill St. Bernard's) and Josh Spivack (Budd Lake/Mount Olive) had late shots for the Cyclones but Cabrini keeper Bryan Johnson came up with the saves necessary to keep his team in front.

Johnson made 11 saves in the match and Centenary keeper Damien DiBuono (Succasunna/Morris Catholic) made eight. The men are now 1-4 in the PAC and 6-8-1 overall as they head toward their next PAC match against Neumann College, this Wednesday at 4:00pm on Cyclone Field.

DeFeo Nets Two in the Draw

(10/10/07) This afternoon the Centenary men’s soccer team took on visiting John Jay College on Cyclone field.  Senior Justin DeFeo (Hawthorne/Hawthorne) scored two goals for his team to bring them back from a two goal deficit but unfortunately it was not enough to put the Cyclones out in front.

After a late start, the Bloodhounds were about to get a jump on the Cyclones after a questionable call in the box for a penalty kick.  Hiromi Karahashi stepped up and took the kick and even though Centenary keeper Damien DiBuono (Succasunna/Morris Catholic) made a great first save, Karahashi was able to finish off the rebound and put John Jay up 1-0.  At the end of the half the Cyclones still had to battle back from a one goal shortage.

Only four minutes into the second period Centenary let another goal in, this time off of a corner by Miguel Rodriguez who found the head of Karahashi for his second goal of the game.  The score remained unchanged until the 68th minute of play when DeFeo received a ball from teammate Damien Gallegos (Rutherford/Queen of Peace) and chipped the Bloodhound’s keeper from outside the box to make the score 2-1.  Twenty minutes later DeFeo found the back of the net again off of a free kick hit by Andrew Clifton (Flanders/Gill St. Bernard).  Clifton sent a long ball sailing into the box and just over the fingertips of John Jay goalie Kemar BrownDeFeo was there to put the ball in to knot the game at two.

The Cyclones continued the assault in almost darkness in the first overtime period but before they could finish the referees called the game. Despite out shooting the Bloodhounds 25-12, the Centenary men could not pull out the victory.

The draw brings the men’s overall record to 6-7-1 as they look toward this weekend and their next PAC opponent Cabrini College.  The men play the second game in a double header with the women’s team at 3:00pm on October 10th.    Boxscore
