Men Fall to Neumann in Senior Night Spoiler

Will Atkinson

(2/19/08) In their final game of the season the Centenary men’s basketball team took on PAC rival Neumann College in the second half of a double-header with the women.  In this night of senior recognition the men were disappointed by the Knights by a score of 85-76.

The two teams traded the lead for the majority of the first half, with neither team taking control. Ten minutes in the game was still neck in neck and with three minutes senior Kyle Boone (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) hit a three pointer to knot the game up once again at 36.  As time wound down, the Knights were able to gain a small advantage by extending their lead to seven going into the break.

The second half began with the Knights extending their lead to ten early into play.  The Cyclones continued to trail for the next ten minutes as Neumann continued to increase the deficit.  Down by 20 with less than nine left to go, the men struggled to keep the ball away from the Knights and get points on the board.  A three at 4:54 by senior Josh Davidson (Beesley’s Point/Ocean City) sparked the crowd but was not able to ignite the run that the men needed to close the gap.  The final buzzer sounded with Centenary still behind by nine.

For Neumann, DJ Fritz paced the team with 26 while teammate Derahn Patrick tallied 23.  Eli Hitchens notched a double-double for the Knights putting 10 points and 11 rebounds on the board.

The Cyclones were led by Will Atkinson (Hazlet/Raritan) and Andrew Baker (Sparta/Sparta) who both hit the double-double mark for the night.   Atkinson sunk a total of 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Centenary while Baker recorded 19 points and 16 rebounds.   Seniors Boone and Davidson both added to the men’s total scoring 12 and eight points respectively in their final game at Centenary.    Boxscore

Centenary Downed by Gwynedd-Mercy 94-64

(2/16/08) The Centenary men’s basketball team played the second half of a double-header with Gywnedd-Mercy this afternoon in the Folkner Family Gymnasium.  The men were out-matched by their PAC Conference opponent, losing 94-64.

The game began with the two teams trading baskets and Centenary taking the lead for the first ten minutes of play with baskets by Will Atkinson (Hazlet/Raritan) and Andrew Baker (Sparta/Sparta).  Halfway through the first period the game was knotted up at 14 but from there the Cyclones lost control.  The Griffins went on a 26 to 3 run, putting them ahead of Centenary by 20 going into the halftime break with a score of 43-23.

The second half began with Tom Keenan hitting two three pointers for the Griffins, extending their lead to 26.  Senior Josh Davidson (Beesley’s Point/Ocean City) came off the bench for the Cyclones and added nine points to the men’s total, all in the second period.  The second half proved to be a different story for the Cyclones who were down by 30 with 10 minutes left to go in the game.  The Griffins continued the onslaught, increasing their advantage to a high of 43 before the game ended with a score of 94-64.

Atkinson came out on top for the men hitting four from outside the arc and tallying 23 points total while Baker recorded a double-double for Centenary scoring 10 points grabbing a team high 10 rebounds.

For the Griffins, Dave Smith recorded 15 points and eight rebounds to lead the team.  Matt Johnson tallied 11 points and four rebounds for Gwynedd-Mercy.

Centenary is back in action for their last home game of the season against Neumann College Tuesday, February 19th at 8:00pm.  Boxscore

Cyclone Men Drop Nail Biter 68-66 to Cabrini

(2/9/08)  In the second half of the days double header, the Cyclone men dropped a last minute decision to visiting Cabrini by the final of 68-66. This loss drops Centenary to 4-17 overall, 2-11 in the conference, while Cabrini moves above .500 with the victory at 7-6 in the PAC.

The Cyclones opened the game shooting the lights out, connecting on eight three pointers in the games first 11 minutes, giving the Cyclones an early advantage of 29-13.  From there Cabrini began to work themselves slowly back into the game, making stops on the defensive end while capitalizing on offense.  The Cavaliers eventually tied the game at 34-34 on a lay up by Charles Bush just before the halftime break.

In the second half the Cyclones fell behind early, as Cabrini went on a 17-7 run in the opening four minutes. The Cyclones began their own climb back into the game, cutting the deficit to three with three minutes to play.  Centenary then found themselves down two with just under a minute to play.  A last second attempt at a game tying shot was unable to get off, while the visiting Cavaliers captured the win.

The Cyclones were paced by William Atkinson (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) who scored a game high 23 points, including six three-pointers. Adding to today’s efforts was Robert Urie (Ortley Beach, NJ/Toms River East) who finished today with 14 points, while Andrew Baker (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) added 8 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

Cabrini was led by Randy Reid who finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, while teammate Glenn Washington added 14 points and six boards.

Cyclones Top Marywood 71-62

Josh Davidson

(2/8/08)  On the Men’s side of things the Cyclones extended a five point halftime lead into a nine point victory, 71-62, to snap a six game losing streak last evening.   The win was the second of the year for Centenary over the host Pacers.

Marywood built a 16-11 lead with 13:29 to play in the period on a Josh Pena lay-up.  The Cyclones would battle back and take a 22-20 lead on a Josh Davidson (Beesley’s Point/Ocean City) three-pointer with 6:43 remaining on the clock, a lead the visitors would extend to 10 over the next four minutes before Marywood drew within five as the teams headed into their locker rooms.  Will Atkinson (Hazlet/Raritan) led all first-half scorers with 12 points while Davidson added 11 points and six rebounds in the opening stanza for the Cyclones, who were a perfect eight for eight from the free throw line.

Marywood was able to trim the lead to three points early in the second half on a three-pointer from Nick Stoud,  but a 10-2 run by the Cyclones over the next five minutes would give the visitors 52-39 lead with 10:52 to play in the game.  Centenary would then use an 11-3 run to build a 16-point lead at 65-49 with just under three minutes to play to put the game out of reach.  The Cyclones were led by Atkinson's game-high 21 point performance, while Robert Urie (Ortley Beach/Toms River East) and Davidson each added 14 points.  Andrew Baker (Sparta/Sparta) was a huge presence in the paint for the Cyclones, recording a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, while also blocking three shots.  Boxscore
