Peer Tutors/First Year Leaders

In 2003, Centenary College embarked on a very important initiative that has brought the college recognition in the world of First Year Leadering and Writing Support for undergraduates.

What is a First Year Leader and why are they so important to Centenary’s freshmen students?
First Year Leaders are upper class leaders at the college who are specially trained on how to provide emotional, informational, and academic support to first-year students at Centenary.

How is the program designed?
Centenary’s faculty and staff crafted the program after the best practices identified across college institutions throughout the country. But the Centenary Program reflects our own values, particularly those that foster a respect for diversity, even in the way we learn, a commitment to collaborative learning and a believe in service to others.

How can I become a First Year Leader?
As you think about your learning experience, consider this: Peer Tutors are leaders. They are trained in communication models and in how to teach others to learn. But they want to help. They bring to their jobs the wisdom that comes from having once been a Freshman and wanting to help others deal with life experiences, and ultimately to succeed at Centenary.

If you see yourself as a First Year Leader, contact  the Campus Life Office and let us know your interest. We’ll take it from there.
