Student Activities Center

A Place for Students Run by Students
In Fall 2011, Centenary unveiled the first phase of the new student activities center complete with game room, gourmet vending machines, video games, and televisions. Beyond being an all campus lounge and snack shop, it is also a multipurpose venue that will provide a meeting space for student clubs and organizations, a location to host events such as dances and performers, as well as offer all students a staffed space, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Why Build a Student Activities Center?
Beyond the simple answer that our students asked for it.
Research shows, "interpersonal relationships are important elements to students' success in college" (Morgan 4). The new space accomodates all students, creating a location for diverse interaction, friendships, and professional relationships to develop organically.
"Pascarella (1980) concluded, 'contacts between students and college faculty resulted in a number of positive educational outcomes'" creating growth in cognitive development, promoting greater interaction with the instutional environment, and increasing the quality of student effort expended on campus activities both academic and social (Flowers 633).
Multiple sources recognize the importance of this involvement, positvely relating it to:"
- academic success,
- better grades,
- retention,
- timely graduation,
- marketability when job searching or applying to graduate school,
- satisfaction with the college experience,
- and development of necessary leadership and interpersonal skills.
Moreover, our campus is created by both residents and commuters. The new space allows our commuters the same opportunity to identify and attach to the college, promoting their involvement and campus interaction (Astin 518).
What does "A Place for Students Run by Students" mean?
This is a student space! Through collaboration with work study students and our management program, various students learn to run and care for the venue, handle booking for events, and create exciting intitiatives to provide more avenues for student involvement.
All of our student staff have the support of college security, faculty, and staff. While students run the space, the college administration is there for guidance.
