Position Information

Title  Middle School Language Arts Teacher
Description  Responsibilities:

• To provide skilled instruction in English/Language Arts aligned to the Common Core State Standards and other instructional
expectations established by the school
• To provide instruction in foundational reading skills if and when needed, as well as the analysis and response to
literature
• To implement informal, formal, and standardized assessments to students periodically over the course of the school year
• To utilize data to inform and drive daily and long-term instruction
• To teach a small-group intervention period based on students’ performance on internal benchmark testing
• To collaborate effectively with other teachers on the middle school team to support the learning and behavioral progress
of all students
• To implement the mission and education program of the Central Jersey Arts Charter School in a safe, peaceful, stimulating,
and aesthetically pleasing classroom environment
• To design and execute engaging lesson plans and instructional materials with the intent of meeting whole-class, small-
group, and individual student academic needs, in accordance with the broader curricular design and objectives of the school
• To create and maintain an effective, print-rich environment for learning and community-building within the classroom
• To engage in reflective practice by seeking out school leader and peer classroom visits and lesson feedback
• To design, revise, and implement, in conjunction with other staff and community members, the school’s arts-integrated
curriculum
• To develop and maintain each student’s portfolio of student work, long- and short-term learning goals, and overall
progress goals
• To establish and maintain positive, open relationships with parents and families, and to communicate regularly with
parents about the progress of learners
• To share information about student progress with other stakeholders, including school leaders and counselors
• To actively participate in school teams and meetings, with the goal of developing professional knowledge and
collaboratively problem-solving with colleagues; all teachers are asked to participate in at least one committee
• To select and requisition books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies, and maintain required inventory records.
• To comply with district policies and administrative rules and directives, including but not limited to submission of
instructional materials and curricular tasks, lunch/hallway/recess duty, attending parent meetings, administration of state,
district, or internal assessments, etc.
• To undertake regular professional development in integrated arts
• To attend and participate in school events (a minimum of 15 hours)
• To participate in at least one school committee
• To perform other duties generally consistent with the above as requested

Required Skills

• Must have experience in theater, either acting, directing, or other aspects of production
• Excellent verbal and written communication
• Excellent computer skills in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Demonstrated success in classroom teaching
• Outstanding ability to relate to urban children and their families
• Ability to effectively manage multi-aged groups of students in a classroom and performance setting
• Unflagging attention to detail and an uncompromising work ethic
• Ability to work collaboratively with other staff to accomplish goals
• Proficiency with Spanish a plus
Required Experience and Certification
• Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university
• Theater Major preferred
• Theater teaching certification in New Jersey or alternate route candidacy

This position will be compensated commensurate with experience.
